2009 YAMAHA VSTAR 650 - OEM Pipe Mod

In this video we show the before and after of the pipe modification done to a 2009 Yamaha VStar 650 Classic. This modification involves drilling 4 holes in each of the tailpipes to give the bike a louder, more throaty sound. I am quite satisfied with the result given it saves me from buying and installing after market pipes. Although perhaps not quite as good as new pipes, this job provided a good result that I am pleased with, at zero cost and only moderate effort.

I watched this video and did it to my VStar 650 but I did it with a 1/2 inch drill bit....SOUNDS AMAZING and NO loss of power. Didn't have to re-jet or make any adjustments.

Glad to hear it worked for you as well as it has for me! It's been over three years since I did this mod, and the bike still runs perfect without any other carb or airflow adjustments.

Sure it will be no loss of power. More holes in the exhaust = less resistance for air to come out = more power. So you should end up with more effective horses than it is in the motorcycle.

We just cut the pipe off and replaced with 2.5" pipe that had a small baffle welded in. Basically a straight pipe but not quite as annoying.

I had forgotten what stock exhaust sounds like. My 05 exhaust was modded years ago.

You can get a jetting kit for straight pipes from sigma for like 50 bucks. They make them custom for each bike.

Could one tap the holes to put bolts in for night riding/longer rides?

Hi Jackie, I don't really think so because the metal in the muffler is very thin and I suspect with the significant heating that the bolts would rattle out when riding with the expansion of the metal. The mod would be permanent but my suggestion, and what I did, was to do it in stages with a smaller diameter drill bit and then starting it up and listening, and then increasing the drill bit size until you get the sound you are looking for. I didn't want anything too loud, but wanted the bike to be loud enough that pedestrians and others would know I am coming. Also, my back-up plan was always to just buy some aftermarket pipes if the mod didn't work out and that strategy provided me with the confidence I needed to just go for it. I am still really happy with the mod and ride the bike regularly. Happy Riding! :)

how far in did you drill? does it affect the bike negatively in any way? thanks for vid

gtanphysiologic Hi, I drilled in about 3 inches. Also, when you are drilling, keep your drill parallel to the pipes (going straight in). The outside baffle you are drilling through is angled, but by drilling parallel with the pipes, you get a nice oval shaped hole that imho looks better and I think helps with the sound of the bike as well. The mod hasn't affected the bike in anyway. In fact, it seems to me that the bike has a bit more pep than it did before, but that may just be my perception due to the improved sound. Certainly no down side for start up or running of the machine that I've noticed... It still runs perfect as it did before. The way I look at this mod, is that if you want the bike to sound better, you can go purchase new pipes or do the mod for free. Worst case, if you don't like the sound, then you still have the option to go buy pipes. For me, the mod has done the trick.

Still sounds like a lawn mower. Just get a holesaw and drill the baffle out completely. Then you will get some sound.

With a minor pipe job like this you don't need to rejet. If you really go to town on it and either remove the baffles or drill huge holes, then yes you would need to rejet.
