These bloated, lifted hatchbacks are a scourge and represent everything wrong with our dying civilisation. They are measurably worse than a station wagon or hathback in every way - safety, economy, looks, handling, space. But manufacturers have succeeded in advertising them to the ignorant masses, into buying them with debt to drive up and down stroads until we run out of resources and it all comes crashing down.

Mercedes Benz GLK350. The official car of silently telling everyone you bought a home in Winding Hills, Mechanicsburg PA. Chances are you probably didn't even know where you're standing used to be an apple orchard, nor do you know the baseball field across the street where your kids Jeremy and Caite - that's Kate with a C and and I because you wanted to be *DIFFERENT* - was where corn grew and cows defecated. God I never realized how much I disliked this car, and it just unearthed deep seeded reasons connecting so many dots from my past years. It's classism on 4 wheels. It's showing your only trait in life is vocalizing where you think the next a Starbucks should be built.

Oh my God this is so accurate. One of my most recent memories of one of these is a heavily battle damaged one pulling up to me while I was walking on the sidewalk, curbing the wheels so hard chunks of alloy blew off, and the 16 year old female driver taking a ungodly vape hit. My friend then leaned forward in the passenger seat and waved, before awkwardly introducing me to his new girlfriend (the driver). I noted "Hey, I think you may have pretty badly curbed your wheels just now," and she giggled and took another vape hit.

We had one of these before we were poor. GLK wealth was going to Fry’s because it was better than Best Buy, but still not buying anything because “we can think about around Christmas time”. GLK wealth was going to Steak ‘n Shake for the experience. GLK wealth was moving in to a ‘new’ house because it was something your grandparents bought when houses were cheap and pay was good compared to inflation, while your neighbor across the street is moving in because they need a “quaint” 2 story, 4 car garage winter home. GLK wealth was having two sets of golf clubs to choose from, but no membership to any clubhouses.

As a car hauler that works primarily with Mercedes, that "Doesn't go from a stop" is a God send. Often times the tires are inches away from dropping off the front of a deck, a lot of vehicles can EASILY go right off. Mercedes? They just stay right there until you're ready to pull back. It's nice, I like working with them.

As someone who primarily drives a manual I prefer no-creep, and always think it absurd when electric cars and hybrids have it artificially. I guess it's about what your used to, people who usually drive manuals will prefer no-creep and conventional automatics prefer creep. One thing Tesla did right is give the driver the option to turn it on or off. As well as your car-hauler scenario, I think it's safer for the car to not go if you let go of the brake, versus to start moving on its own.

@@richardman88 You basically put a little sensor thingy in the car that records and transmits driving information to your insurance company so they can see how you drive. If you do anything they don't like such as speeding (or in this case hard acceleration) they can increase your rates and basically fine you for driving in a way which might potentially increase chances of an accident (and therefore the chance you will make a claim they might have to pay out on). Good video, a truly regular car review in this time. Back in 2019? I helped a female roommate pick this suv at one of those used car places in New York city. Literally the only bad thing about the car was original tires, and for 10 year old tires at that moment and 100k miles it was pretty much brand new. Spotless underneath as I did the ppi. I did some light research and people who bought this vehicle really liked it, especially for the fact that it is very normal. No super fancy suspension system to break for 3k a pop, nearly every part could be replaced for toyota camry prices. To this day its the best vehicle I could recommend for 10k given its clean underneath and has some service history. Said girl still drives it, and has put in nothing but oil changes. A 30 year old girl treats it much better than a 20 year old thats for sure lol.

I've owned a 2014 GLK250 Bluetec diesel from new, so I guffawed (a greatly underutilized verb, IMO). I suppose it's a bit more interesting, but not a lot more interesting, than the gas version in having two turbochargers attached to its little four-banger diesel. What it does do, is achieve amazing fuel mileage (6.4 L/100km on my Montréal-Toronto and back trip this weekend or 36USmpg) with surprising performance for such a small diesel in such a heavy car. Not sure if I own it to look wealthy, and, though I'm now retired, I've never been in either real estate or accounting, but I do know I own it because it's cheaper and far, far more reliable than the R-class it replaced, and it's as near to unstoppable in snow as my wife's ancient Volvo Cross-Country. Speaking of which, a Volvo Cross-Country should definitely be on your list of cars to drive.

@@nocilol3000 I would say so. While not the most spirtited thing, my test drive found it agile and with solid power. The V6 sounds pretty good. It’s a really simplistic car that doesn’t have much tech, so it’s likely really easy to work on and so much is shared with the C class all the parts are cheap/easy to get. Mercs from this era are really solid. I have 2016 GLA45 AMG and just hit 100k miles. Never needed anything but regular fluid changes.

Mercedes mechanic here! The whole 'putting it in D and it doesn't creep' all depends on how the car is driven. Usually the transmission ECU learns your driving style, and adapts to it. If you mash the gas every time it creeps hard, if you drive slow and careful, it almost doesn't creep. PS: Ive been given shit by jokingly describing the design of the GLK as "The Subaru Forester of Mercedes"

I didn't ask for the black GLK350 that my mom bought me, she just did out of the blue when I graduated. I got to say, it did get attention from the people who worked at the factory and warehouse that was refurbishing TVs, and now I've moved on to working with Taxes for the state government in the state I reside, and it still gets that "wow a Mercedes" comment from people who don't realize my family didn't even pay $20k for the used thing. I even had a Tinder date that suddenly got excited when she saw me pull up in it, because she was from a low-income family and didn't realize they made cars for people who want to overpay for gasoline (yes I scored but I don't think the GLK350 deserves all the credit for that). It's a nice car to drive and ride. I appreciate it because it exists for me right now, and is aging better than the old beaten up 2001 Chevy Venture van which my dad destroyed the interior of because he's an ogre and treats objects like Shriek would (feels bad because that car got me through college), or the 1995 Fleet-wood Cadillac that my sister destroyed and has its wheels off in a garage while the roof rots off, or that Lincoln Navigator my parents spent years trying to get running again. Cars they touch turn to milk. I'm going to ride this magical half-German, half-Mexican gift horse as long and hard as I can while longingly looking at Jeep Gladiators on the road, then forgetting about it because those cost way too much. It's a perfectly boring car, for my perfectly boring job, and I wouldn't ask for much more.

I’m a mechanic and own one as my family hauler. They’re really good cars, I think the GLC was a downgrade. They’re relatively reliable and easy to work on. The only issues I had was the idler pulley broke off (which was a simple 5 min repair), the the tailgate release motor doesn’t work but I never bothered fixing it as I barely load the back and I own other cars to use if I have to.

I still see these driving around my area with decent regularity but I've never put any more thought into them than "oh it's just the small mercedes SUV". The exterior styling is fine, and imo by the time they stopped making these in, what, 2015? It looked less out of place than some other models that old. As for the interior, it gives me very strong early 2000s Cadillac Art and Science vibes. If you covered up the mercedes badge, showed me a drivers seat POV shot and told me it was a Cadillac SRX I would've taken your word for it. I like it, in a "This would've been a fantastic rental car seven years ago" sort of way

The GLK is a future classic - mark my words. The whole "looking wealthy without knowing what wealth is" and unnecessary SUVs based off of car platforms that give the appreance of prestige is what the market wants right now. This is especially true of German and American brands, and will continue for another few years until the customers that dealers currently prey on with $1k/mo. leases run out of credit. The GLK is not only a symbol of 2010 engineering, but a foreshadowing to late 2010s and 2020s mindless consumerism.

I've rebuilt a lot of Benzes, and I can tell you... this was around the beginning of them becoming disposable GARBAGE, even mechanically. The transfer case is built into the transmission of these... so if one breaks, it's ALL getting replaced. At least til about 2005-2007, most models were dead simple and modular (mechanically)

You say the GLK model was killed off in 2015, and while the name was ended that was due to MB restructuring the naming scheme for their SUVs, the GLK became the GLC to match it's C-class position, the ML became the GLE, and the GL became the GLS to match the E and S classes. Also that 7 speed is a standard torque converter automatic except in later AMG cars that replaced the TC with a wet clutch.
