An update of the 1st video showing Vauxhall Insignia engine knocking. I decided to fit a new engine into the vehicle. In this video, old engine was stripped down to identify fault.
- Faulty oil pickup seal resulting in low oil pressure.
This a common fault & effects the follow vehicles & engine codes...
Astra J 2010-16 - Engine code A20DTH, A20DTR, Y20DTJ & Z20DTJ
Cascada from 2013 - Engine code A20DTH& A20DTR
Insignia 2009-17 - All 2.0 Diesel Engines except Engine code B20DTH
Zafira C from 2012 - Engine Code A20DT, A20DTH, A20DTL, A20DTR, Y20DTJ & Z20DTJ
Replacement seal is readily available - Seal part number is GM 55589549

If you have "Oil Pressure Low - Stop Engine"message dispayed breifly on cold startups. Replace Oil pickup seal as soon as possible. Failure to do so, will result in severe engine damage. - In some case seized engine. Seal is readily available - Seal part number is GM 55589549 Affected vehicles & engine code are as follows.... Astra J 2010-16 Engine code A20DTH, A20DTR, Y20DTJ & Z20DTJ Cascada 2013-> Engine code A20DTH& A20DTR Insignia 2009-17 All 2.0 Diesel Engines except Engine code B20DTH Zafira C 2012-> Engine Code A20DT, A20DTH, A20DTL, A20DTR, Y20DTJ & Z20DTJ

I bought an insignia 2 weeks ago looked and ran great for a week then oil pressure low light appeared so booked in the garage for 6th Jan earliest I could. Started it today its knocking and steering sounds like the Titanic hull breaking in two.

Had the oil seal done on mine 2 years ago with low oil pressure, 74,000 miles, when i bought it, garage said bottom end was fine, 20, 000 miles later sounds like bottom ends gone. Going back to garage tomorrow, i hope im wrong.

I’ve got one of these that somehow has bad piston rings, bottom end looks fine so I’m kinda confused how the rings just went bad.

Got oil seal on my Astra 2.0 CDTI replaced by Harvey's, Hill top West Bromwich. £230.00 including oil change, oil filter and new sump gasket. They had to remove the drive shaft. There were no cut outs in the flywheel or the sump, so they had to undo the gearbox to make enough room for access to the 2 sump bolts.

if gearbox has no cut outs for the 2 sump bolts. It is a bigger job. Some gearboxes already have cut outs making it easier.

Got a similar car and told it has an engine seize though it starts engine randomly stops and sounds seized but might then start again.

Was this the engine that was making the knocking sound or another engine iv got noise from my engine doesnt sound like this one but trying to get to bottom of it thanks

If you have low oil pressure warning all the main bearing shells will be fucked. Changing seal will NOT fix your engine. Gm shell set before crank gets scored you may just save your engine. My crank was supported on no 1 an no 5 an the inner bearings basically collapsed

Got the earning light on cold starts, got the new seal, got the cutouts in the gearbox bellhousing (luckily) and am gonna tackle this job very soon on my siggy cdti 160, would you recommend replacing the shell & main bearings as a precaution, or have a "aint broke dont fix" approach? Dont think the bottom ends knocking just yet haha

Replace seal ASAP, to prevent severe engine damage. If there's no knocking from bottom end, shells should be fine.

@@PaulsTechChannel thanks Paul, ive just completed the job. Took 3 days (I set aside 2 to do it but had a migraine from hell on day 2 so I took a rest!) and there wasnt/ isnt any knocking. The seal wasnt split, it had just gone very hard and plasticky, and there wasnt any metal shavings in the sump when I took it off so I gave it a good clean, new seal and its back up and running now. Guess I caught it just in time! Havent seen the warning light since, and the service now message is gone too after resetting the oil life indicator, nice little bonus 👍 Was a pain in the butt to do but your video really helped, so cheers very much! 🍻

@@hamstirrer6882 Yes pickup seals do go hard over time, common fault with these engines. It is awkward to do, especially if you've not done one before. - WELL DONE mate :)

Is it possible to change the crankshaft and bearings in this situation or is it cheaper to do a complete engine replacement?

Depends on severity of damage, if not too bad you may get away with having crankshaft reground & fit oversize bearing shells to match. If damage is too bad or engine seized, replacement is the only option. When fitting a used engine. Fit new cambelt kit with water pump & Replace oil pickup seal BEFORE fitting engine !

​@@mrmotorvator5151no there is MUCH MUCH worst than that. Tgat engine is good if we change that seal early enough before getting the alert or quickly after getting the alert without driving after getting the alert.

Would Wynns Stop Leak help with that problematic seal you reckon? It says on the tin that it helps to revitalise rubber seals

Yes it could help but the risk is to big if it doesn't so it may be good if you dont have the alert yet, but if you allready got the alert it's best to change the seal imediatly, you dont have time to wait for the additive to maybe work. But if you dont care and are one of those who keep driving with the alert then it's better to try that product than doing nothing.

Yes with a full bottom end rebuild & depending on severity pf damage crankshaft. It will either require to be reground with new oversize bearing shells fitted. Or worse case, a replacement.

I’ve got a 140 cdti on a 14 plate is this a common problem on mine or just the earlier 160 bhp engines ?

Its a common problem effecting all A20 CDTI engines

It's actually a Fiat engine, so 2.0 JTDM (939) FIAT, Alfa Romeo, the Saab 2.0 TTiD, Chevrolet Cruze 2.0D have all the same oil sump seal problem.

If your engine code is B20DTH. No, this oil pickup seal is not for your engine.

@@PaulsTechChannel thanks for the help/reply Paul. I have 02 sensor issues code P11DB oxygen sensor 1 but I brought the wrong one from Vauxhall located in the DPF so goto wait till I got the money thanks again Paul for the vidioes / help
