Recently purchased a 2012 Ford Explorer XLT with a backup camera that said to contact the dealer. When I went to the dealer they wanted over $800 for the camera and labor to replace it. I found a replacement on eBay for about $36 and with your outstanding video was able to replace it without any issue. And it worked great and had the guidelines in the display.

Thanks for the video. One other tip for those of us in colder states, take the extra 30 seconds and remove the "Nut" of the other side and remove the whole trim piece. That piece is made of plastic. Colder temperatures makes plastic extremely brittle. If you leave that other nut in place and try flexing that trim piece as much as you are in the video, I'm afraid your viewers are going to be shopping for a trim piece too. I can almost guarantee it's going to snap off. Otherwise great video.

Watched this video and ordered a new camera on Amazon: Master Tailgaters Replacement for Ford Explorer (2011-2012) Backup Camera OE Part # BB5Z-19G490-A. $135.99. Took me about 15 mins to fix. Camera works great and the guide lines came back without having to reprogram. Added a very light smear of electrical grease to the new connection.

I noticed the price hike last week. Really makes me sick to my stomach. $300 for the camera alone is extremely steep. Especially considering that we wouldn't need to replace it had they done their job when they built car.

Anywhere that sells one. Do google search for part number and see who sells them and for what price. They can ship to you. Check your local dealer down the street. Check with small town dealers near you. They can ship. Check with any U-Pull-It places near you or they can ship. If your state has high cost of living, check state with a lower cost of living. Do search for Ford dealers in X state get a phone number and call them. Check Ebay. Etc etc etc

Anyone know what is the top 1-2 causes for the rear view camera to only work intermittently? When it doesn't work, I get that "Rear view camera is unavailable. Contact your dealer" message. Is this usually a wiring/short issue? or the actual camera? Any replace the camera and still have it work intermittently?

My backup camera (2013 Ford Explorer) is intermittent, it would work 50% of the time, when it doesn´t it would show the "camera unavailable" message. What I fear buying the $240+ camera to find out is a loose connection or a problem outside the camera. I will start taking it apart and cleaning the camera connector and the plug, using dielectric grease. Besides that connector I don´t know where else should I check. 0701hawk have any ideas? Do I really have a bad camera? Thanks in advance

All you can really do yourself is clean the connector and/or replace camera. If it is a wiring issue then the wire has to be replaced which means taking the trim/dash apart which is a job. There are videos on KZfaq which can show you how to test the wiring to find out if it is faulty. Basically using a multimeter/ voltmeter to test the output when you put the car in reverse. If you are having issues besides the camera then it could be the computer. My suggestion is clean the connector and replace camera. Make sure you keep receipt and packaging for camera and if that is not the issue take it back for a refund. Be sure to have a clear understanding of their return policy BEFORE you buy. Outside of that it probably going to be a dealer issue. Good luck.

@@0701hawk Thanks, I cleaned the camera connector and plug with contact cleaner then used dielectric grease. Went for a drive today and camera worked all the times I tested it, so far so good. In the meantime I lost the calibration, so no bars or visual aid of any kind are present. I´m watching your video of the Forscan procedure. Thanks again.

Thanks for the good video. Unfortunately Ford decided to up their price of these cameras to a ridiculous $300(ish) recently. Mine flips the image and it drives me crazy. What should be on the right side of the camera shows up on the left making the camera nearly useless. Hard to spend $300 on the part. Seems like a money grab by Ford to help make up for some of their losses with the MyFordTouch system as the mark up is obviously huge on these things. Very disappointing especially given that they have so many issues with these cameras.

That's the thing with actually fixing the issue with the camera, it usually costs more. All the people with the $100 cameras will be replacing them when they fail again. Its not just Ford, every manufacturer is having the same issue with the cameras because they are all supplied by a single company, just like the airbag debacle.

Hello, thank you for this video. I am taking steps to figure out why my camera is sporadically working. Following your steps I removed the ford crome piece along with the bolts to reach the inside. One thing I have determined is the weather strip is corroded and should be replaced. I have spent some time trying to find a part number, without anything. Would you be able to assist me with a part number or point me in direction of where to purchase this strip to be replaced. You do mention this in your video. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

I'm assuming you are talking about the rubber strip behind or attached to the chrome trim. That is not a serviceable part and the whole chrome piece would have to be replaced. Liftgate body mouldimg #FB5Z-13B482-AA You can get parts from your local car dealer, ebay, or a car parts warehouse online (just do a web search for that part number).

Unless you are covered under some warranty,, YES, the dealer will charge for the camera part, the service labor to put it in and then to reconfigure. If you can get the camera cheaper and save on labor by putting it in your self you will save money on the overall repair. If you can find a wrecked Explorer that still has a camera that works you can save considerable money.

I have a 2011 Explorer and recently lost parking grid lines, camera still works. Dealer said I need a new camera assembly to the tune of $700 bucks plus. Question, if I replace the camera will I still need the dealer to flash the RVC configuration??

Yes. However if your camera works fine do the reconfig without replacement first and see if they come back. You will need an OBD cable or OBD Bluetooth adapter. You will need a laptop and download Forscan (see above in video details). You can reprogram camera yourself for free and see if that works before replacing the camera.

+FMBOSS Try that first. If it doesn't work you will still need cable to reconfig after camera replacement. Replacment cameras are running 300 to 400 dollars. Don't pay any more than that. Try EBay and call several dealers til you get the best price. They can always ship you the part so this gives you unlimited dealers you can check for best price.

Great video man, thanks. Any idea if it's possible to get the silver plastic trim piece on the steering wheel for a 2012 Ford Explorer? I cannot find the part numbered or labeled in any diagram. I can't believe that you have to buy the entire steering wheel just to get that piece. I need to replace my cruise control switch module but I think it's the actual clip holes on that piece, and not the clips/prongs on the switch itself, that are broken. I cannot figure out how you get that one piece off of the steering wheel to get a better look, or replace the switch module. There is one small screw that screws in from the back, toward the bottom, of the steering wheel into that silver piece, but the piece is still held into place quite well. I cannot figure out to get that piece off! Its inside edges also seem to be "behind" the airbag module so I just can't figure out the proper procedure for checking/replacing my switch module. I greatly appreciate any help that you can provide!

Best I can tell there are 3 screws holding that trim piece to the wheel. Remove the visible one at the bottom of the wheel. Looking at the back of the wheel, rotate the wheel slightly right (left if facing from the front), you will see one of the two other screws. Repeat on opposite side.

Hello again, I finally got around to trying to remove that plastic trim piece on the steering wheel--on my 2012 Limited model, it is a silver plastic trim piece that trims out the steering wheel control switches and airbag. The one screw at the bottom center of the wheel (back side) is no problem--I can easily remove it and this does allow the bottom of the trim piece to move some. But I do not see any of the other screws that you mention. I have turned my wheel both directions to get a good look a the back side and while I do see some square cutouts and two round holes (with little rubber things that have green paint dobbed on them), I do not see any other screws. I guess they changed the design with the 2012 Explorers? This is really annoying. Even before you told me to look for those other two screws, I had taken my kick panel and several other pieces off under and around my steering column trying to figure out how to removed this trim piece and I still did not see any way to do it. Any other ideas? I can send you a photo of what I'm seeing from the back side with the wheel rotated if that will help. Thanks!

It really sucks how damn expensive the replacement cameras are. Even the cheap ones from china I've seen people posting about getting them for like $70-$80, now they're sold out or $130+ I got myself an edge replacement, looks exactly the same for $70 and it worked fine but the camera was upside down, I tried in forscan to flip it but it wouldn't let me.

Yeah the prices do suck. To be honest, I think after this video and the Ford forum posts, people learned how to do this repair on the cheap. Ford decided to raise the price on the cameras. The cameras were faulty from jump. As long as the mechanics and dealers were making money on the replacement there was no need for Ford to do anything. After people learned how to do this repair on their own and stopped going to the dealer, Ford was "losing" money. To compensate they raised the prices on the cameras. It sounds like your camera needs to be calibrated to get it to work right side up. If Forscan didn't work the only other suggestion I have is for you to call SEVERAL dealers near you. Don't just call the one you normally go to. Call the one in the next city/town over. Call the independent dealers around you. It may be worth a hours drive to save 100 bucks. None of them will be "cheap" but at this point you just need the "lowest cost" option. Thanks for watching, good luck and Merry New Year!

Just an FYI: It seems that there's a different part number for the 2011-2012 backup camera: BB5Z19G490A The listing for that ebay item that you mentioned, under item specifics, for Year it lists only 2013-2015 but Product Notes say 2011-2012. A little confusing. If in doubt, check with your ford dealer--give them the last 8 digits of your VIN and they can confirm the exact part number for your car. The BB and EB/DB parts might be identical, dunno. But I ordered the BB one for my 2012 explorer.

Pause video at 0:01. The manual lists the video camera simply as 19G490A (number 4 on parts list). Not sure what the difference is with the numbers and letters that proceed that. Just be sure that when you order the last numbers match up and the ad specifies your year vehicle and you should be fine.

Did you get your wheel trim removed? I have been unable to locate a number for that part. If it doesn't remove after removing the three screws it most likely has adhesive or clips holding it in which case you should be able to pry off.

Hey, my two local ford dealerships gave me only that same 19G490 number too when I called and checked the part number--they both insisted that that's the only camera made for the 2011-2-15 Explorers. But when I called the Ford Dealer (Quirk Ford) for the ebay listing that you mentioned, the parts guy looked it up by VIN number and said that mine called for that slightly different BB... part number. Luckily, they also had an ebay listing for the BB... part so I ordered one. The camera arrived a few days ago. I'm hoping to get time tomorrow to try and install it--hopefully no issues! I will check the number on the old one. I haven't had time to look at the steering wheel trim again. Hopefully will get to check that again soon and will report back.

That is about the going rate for a new genuine Ford camera. The $60 ones are usually knockoffs. Try a junkyard or U-Pull-It place that may have removed a camera from a scraped vehicle.

Jerl Welch Glad you were able to replace your camera. Someone else mentioned the image being upside down and the only thing I can think is the camera needs to be reconfigured. Some have been able to do this with FORSCAN and some have had issues and had to take to dealer for reconfiguring. If you take to dealer, check several dealers near and far for pricing. You may have to drive a little bit but the price might be worth it. If you are in a large city check the dealers in the smaller cities towns around you. The prices on reconfiguring to change drastically from dealer to dealer. Search out at least 50 miles and search independent mechanics that work on Ford/Linc/Merc products that may have the needed software. Just tell them you need a "rear camera reconfiguring". BUT HOW DO YOU REPROGRAM THE LINES IN?

When you do a reset using Forscan the lines should come back. If not, send them a message. Otherwise you may have to get a dealer to do it if Forscan isn't cooperating.

That's a ridiculous price. Guess they are trying to keep people from replacing them. If they used a quality camera in the first place, a replacement wouldn't be necessary.

I bought "OEM 2013 2014 Lincoln MKZ Trunk Panel Rear View Backup Camera with Wiring, Part # DP5T-19G490-A" from aAmazon for $98. Worked perfect. It came with a wiring harness for the Lincoln MKZ, but I unplugged the camera which waas identical to the 2013 Explorer camera. Worked great! Thank you very, very much for the video, helped me do the install in 10 minutes flat!!

+John Salas It should. Someone else posted in the comments that he used a 2013 MKZ camera on his explorer and it worked fine.

just bought a 2011 and camera wasn't working they told me they would fix it for cost 630 dollars told them they can shove that you know where.

it did thanks took a quick look last night at the outside of cam area looked like it would be easy just wasn't sure if it was cam problem or wiring but you video and the symptoms were spot on what mine is doing.
