2011-2015 Mini Cooper S Reverse Light/Rear Fog Housing Replacement **Quick Fix**
Hey Guys,
We are working on our 2013 Mini Cooper S today. We take you step by step on replacing the Reverse Light Housing. This is a common item that gets corroded and results in a warning “bulb out” light on the cluster. The entire housing is pretty cheap, less than $30 and can be swapped out in a few minutes. It’s a good idea to replace the bulbs while you are in there as well

The reverse Light/Rear Fog Housing fits the 2011-2013 Mini Cooper S hatchback models and 2011-2015 Convertible S models.

The exhaust solenoid is relatively easy. The intake is a bear, even when you remove the turbo charge pipe. I had to remove the airbox, then I unbolted the intake manifold without unhooking any of the electric connections. Even then, getting my hand in there to start the solenoid bolt was tough. The bolt sits around the 10'oclock position on the intake solenoid.

Thank you, my dealer has been replacing the bulbs that go out very quick and ignored the actual issue. Hopefully I can get the real problem fixed now.

Thanks for the comments Steve, these are a common issue and rust/corrosion is to blame. Getting new light housings should take care of the problem for many years to come. The good news is that they are relatively cheap, which is not always the case with BMW/Mini. Good luck on your Mini project. Cheers!

Great video, I have a 2012 R57 S and I'm looking to tap into the reverse light wire for an aftermarket backup camera. I seem to only have three wires on the left light side: green, black/white, and brown. I assume the reverse bulb wire is the green one, but is there is more convenient location to tap into the wire? Also, the colors on the right bulb are different: blue/white, blue/black, and brown. Thanks in advance!

Thanks for the comments, unfortunately we don't have any of the wiring diagrams for the Mini Cooper. We do know however that the green wire color is the reverse wire. Depending on where you are mounting the rear camera would dictate the best place to tap into the wiring. It may involve removing the rear cargo trim and carpet to access the wire harness inside the car. Good luck on your Mini project. Cheers!

Thanks for the video! I just fixed mine with your help! I have a question, perhaps you know: what is that second bulb next to the reverse light? No matter what buttons I press in the car those never turn on!

Hey Fedor, glad the video helped you out with your Mini bulb socket repair. The second bulb in that housing is the Rear Fog light bulb. If you have that option on your car, you will have a switch in the center console to turn on both the front and rear fog lights. If you have a 2014+ model then the switch will be next to the headlight switch. @@BradleysGarage Thanks! I have 2013 and looks like I do not have the option. Only front fog lights. Curious that they still put the bulbs in the rear fogs even though there is no way to turn them on! I guess they can be there as spares for reverse bulb :-)

Yeah, my understanding is that the cars are completely wired and setup for rear fogs but they just don't give you the dual switch as shown in the video. It might be a simple as getting the dual switch and then it may work. It also may require some small programming as well since I know the 2014+ needs that to work. You might come across a dual switch in a junkyard car and give it a try on the cheap. Good luck, Cheers!

I have replaced the bulbs (right side) but I haven't replaced the bulb housing (yet). Right now the red light portion comes on but not the clear (reverse) side. Could that be due to corrosion or is it at the electrical connection. I have two prongs (male) that are on the bulb housing for the connector . Are there supposed to be 2 or 3 prongs inside the hub assembly? I didn't have as much corrosion as the one you replaced but I had way too much water inside the assembly and the connector was damp.

Thanks for the question and detailed analysis. I would say it is most likely related to corrosion even if it doesn't look that bad. You can always try to clean the contacts in the bulb housing itself and the connector to see if you can get the reverse lights to work. With regards to the wiring, I will have to take a look to see how many prongs are there but I believe it was only (2). I think it depends on whether or not you have the rear fog option on your car. That 3rd wire/prong should be for those. Let us know how the repair goes on your Mini, Cheers!

Thanks for the comments Daniel, appreciate the feedback. Yes, the non "S" models have a spare in the rear which does stick out below the car making it a little more difficult. Ours came standard wit hthe run-flat tires and therefore no spare. Glad the video was helpful, Cheers!

So my rear fog light bulb disconnected and fell into the housing. I tried to get it out but the hole is too small. Is there a way to remove the plastic red housing?

Sorry to hear that. Our recommendation is to try to use a shop vac (vacuum) in order to remove the stuck bulb as this will be the easiest method. Let us know if that doesn't work and I will send you a quick video that covers how to remove the outer lens. Thanks again for hanging out, Cheers!

I have a 2011 base model and my spare tire is hiding one of those two clips that removes housing that holds the bulbs.

Apologies for the confusion Michael, the R56 "S" do not come with a spare tire as the factory 17" tires are "run flat" and therefore the spare is not provided. If you have the spare tire then you will have an additional step to lower it out of the way in order to access the lights. Good luck on your Mini project, Cheers!

The Bluetooth sometimes doesn't connect in my 2015 Ford Fusion, I did NOT find this video helpful AT ALL!

Thanks for the comments Joseph. I will dig through the archive to locate the infamous 2015 Ford Fusion Bluetooth video. That technology can be challenging to master. We would recommend sticking with the German car brands, like this Mini Cooper for example. As their Bluetooth connectivity is more reliable and easier to use. Thanks again for hanging out, Cheers

Yeah, it's hard to believe that there is no protection from the rear wheels. All the water gets flung directly onto the back of that bulb housing. Given the fact that these cars are 10+ years old, that foam trim is definitely not going to last against all those elements. Thanks for the comments, Cheers!
