This is a quick tutorial video on how to change the oil in your 2011-2016 Ford Super Duty truck 6.7L PowerStroke (F250 or F350).
For this project you’ll need 13 quarts of diesel oil, a 16mm socket or wrench, an oil filter wrench, and a Motorcraft FL2051S oil filter, or another brand equivalent. If you like to run oil additives, now is the time to add most of them, like I add Hot Shot’s Secret Stiction Eliminator here. I also used Amsoil 5w40 synthetic diesel oil.
Overall this project is easily accomplished in about 30-45 minutes with no specialty tools and no advanced mechanical abilities required.
Changing your own oil in your Ford PowerStroke is a great way to save money and become more familiar with your truck.
0:00 intro

Thanks for this video. Not only does it break everything down nicely, I'd been researching that additive, and bought some. Seeing you use it made me less worried I'd mess up my truck. Been overspending at the dealership for oil changes, now I'm ready to save some money on maintenance.

@@drivewaydiesel4071 in other comments you talked about different oils. How far do you space out changes with the full synthetics? Is it worth the huge extra cost? I have a 2011 F-350 with 140k. Love it, want it to last forever.

@@donnared5202 I’ve gone back and forth with Hot Shots Secrets Blue Diamond PAO motor oil and Amsoil’s Signature Series motor oil. Both are some of the very few true group IV PAO “real” synthetic base oil motor oils. Many claim to be “full synthetic”, but they are actually blends of highly refined petroleum based oils, versus true PAO synthetics. I’ve slowly moved away from HSS because at one point in time their oil was in very short supply and I was unable to order any for at least a year. I moved to Amsoil’s Signature Series and have been very happy. About every other oil change I have my oil tested by Blackstone and it always comes back flawless and they tell me I could go several more thousand miles without a change. I usually end up changing oil about every 7,500 miles for good measure, and usually a filter change about halfway through an interval. I’d also suggest buying and installing a bypass filter to really filter out the tiny particles down to the 2 micron level. I installed a Frantz filter but it’s a pain the change out and it leaks here and there, so if I had to do it again, I’d install an Amsoil dual-remote bypass filter instead. Easier install and easier to replace with their spin on filters too.

@@drivewaydiesel4071 I really appreciate this info. Last oil change at the dealership was $180! And I go every 3k miles, which as little as I drive is like 2-3x a year. If I could safely do one a year, it'd be worth the extra cost. I will look into that filter. Truly appreciate you pointing that out. I used to change my oil, but I was in the military, could toss my tiny Geo Metro on the lift and it was like 20 minutes tops. This beast intimidates me, so I really appreciate the advice and clear video.

Saw this on the Facebook page you posted it on man. I am going to agree with everyone else that said no to the teflon tape. No need if it doesnt seal up with a copper washer or as is then there is an issue with the bolt or pan threads. Other than that nice video man.

I appreciate the feedback 6.0 Bros! I think the Teflon tape debate is one that will continue to rage on for a long time. My perspective is PTFE can be used on low pressure relatively cool applications. It's stable up until a little over 500 degrees F, which no oil pan should ever see. It's also not affected by fuel oil, hydraulic fluids, petroleum solvents, etc. I should probably have noted that I used Oatley Megatape which is slightly thicker than traditional white PTFE that can be found in most auto supply stores. Again, thanks for the feedback guys!

Steven Fuchs definitely a valid concern. The good news is if something like that did happen, next in line after the oil pan is the oil filter which would weed it out. Not a big probability of it happening, but if it did, the oil filter would handle it.

I have a 2016 Superduty 6.7L with only about 20,000 miles. I had the dealership change the oil and filter. They also replaced the drain plug. With this being the third oil service, is that common? Seems unnecessary...

I've read and seen here on other KZfaq videos that the 6.7 doesn't need the hotshots stiction eliminator. Apparently the fuel injectors are different than on the 6.0 and 6.3's ???

Question: My current truck is a 2015 F350 with 100k miles on it. Is the oil additive still ok to start using with this many miles on it, or will it actually cause problems? Just worried about using a new additive on a vehicle that already has a lot of miles on it. What do you think?
@drivewaydiesel4071
@drivewaydiesel4071 2 жыл бұрын
It’s always best to check with the manufacturer of the additive. However, with most major manufacturers you should probably be safe. If anything, just make sure you change your first run as soon as the manufacturer recommends so you can get whatever contaminants the additive stirred up, out of the truck. Then a dose of the regular maintenance amount from there on out.

I would start with running Hot Shots Secret Stiction Eliminator when you change your oil next. Follow the directions for the initial treatment (4oz per quart of oil) and then in subsequent oil changes use 2oz per quart of oil to keep things clean in your motor. As far as fuel treatments, get their Diesel Extreme and run the initial dosage through a tank of fuel. For continued fuel system treatment, use their Everyday Diesel Treatment (EDT) with each tank of fuel, generally 1-2oz per fill up depending on your tank size. The EDT helps add lubricity to the super dry ultra low sulfur diesel we have to run here in the US. It’s a good way to help keep your CP4 fuel pump in its best shape.

@@thegrimreaper819 I had the same code happen to my other 2014 Powerstroke, mine turned out to be a bad DEF heater. Ford does have a special extended warranty on the DEF heaters for some year models so make sure you give your local dealer a call and have them run your VIN to see if it applies. If it doesn't apply and you are fairly handy, installing a new heater isn't bad. I bought mine from 1aauto.com for a little over $200. I like 1aauto because they have a lifetime warranty on their parts, this one included. www.1aauto.com/2011-16-ford-exhaust-fluid-reservoir-heater-uro-fd0312931/i/1aemx00351

Nice video, but I also agree the teflon is not something I would do. Stiction is not an issue on our 6.7s you shouldnt be using it in there. For added lubrication you should use their FR3 in our motors.
@drivewaydiesel4071
@drivewaydiesel4071 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your comment @m2summ! The teflon is definitely a personal preference thinge never had an issue with it but other folks may feel different. I agree with the FR3, I use Blue Diamond synthetic oil now which has FR3 already in it. The 6.7s definitely don't have stiction like the old 7.3s, but it's detergent and lubricating properties do keep the 6.7s running well, so I always like to use it.

ams oil is ridiculously expensive isnt it?
@drivewaydiesel4071
@drivewaydiesel4071 3 жыл бұрын
It is quite expense, though it does have a lot of fanfare. I used it in this video since a friend of mine had already bought the oil for the truck. They claim it's full synthetic but there isn't really a true definition of "full synthetic". A true full synthetic oil is what is called PAO, aka group IV. I have never been able to find an Amsoil dealer or anyone that works for Amsoil to confirm if their oil is actually full PAO group IV, or just a group III blend. They always seem to dodge the question and they don't publish any of their data online. Because of this, I highly suspect it to be a group III blend. If you're looking for a full PAO, Hot Shot's Secret Blue Diamond is 100% full PAO, no blends. At the exact same price as Amsoil ($45/gal), it's a far superior product in my opinion. If you want to spend less than $45/gal but still get a quality group III product, Hot Shots Secret also makes their Diamond Fleet option, which is about $26/gal for group III synthetic.
