Thanks A bit of a long winded Ride Review with the 2011 R1200GSA such a great bike, that requires skill to ride in technical terrain, the bike is one of the best long distance adventure bikes ever built.

Thank you for a very real review. I just purchased a Yellow 2011GSA with 36k miles from a co worker that had passed. Stepping up from a KLR650, what a difference! Had the dealer do a complete inspection and 12k service, with tires. Put a couple hundred miles on locally, then ventured out for 4 days to get acquainted. At 62 this was a bit of a leap but it truly is a confidence inspires machine.

That is fantastic, sounds like you got a great bike, and super low miles!!! Also from a co worker is good, to really know the history! Hope you enjoy the ride!!

I want to add that the GSA with the big fuel tanks down low in front are ingenious…1 at highway speeds it keeps the wind off you and keeps the bike’s front end stable when semi trucks are blowing dirty wind…much more confidence in this bike than a regular GS. It will keep rain off you too.

I’m a UK tyre pro, so nice to hear someone other than me talking sense about best tyre figment. 50/50 80/20 just don’t work. Always fit the tyre for the most extreme part of the journey.

Great Vid! thanks, Just bought a 2010 -R1200GS, I've had it for about 2 days and have only rode it home. Can't wait to really get to know it. I'm a new street rider so this is a bike I can grow into. Been riding dirt last 5 yrs (KTM XCF-W 350) and very comfortable on that. This is a big machine!

Really cool bike. I have had 4 BMW’s a K16GT, 2006 GS, 2009 RT, and a 2013 Camhead GSA. Rode the Camhead GSA to Alaska from San Francisco and back…it was flawless….rode up to he haul road handle perfect. I have Wilber’s shocks. I do miss the wonder wheel and cruise control, but love the old school with some analog and love the air cool bike.

I went through two sets of shocks on the GS, finally ended up on olins the Wilbers looked like a good option, and yes the big bikes are the way to go on the Alaska trip, I did it once on a 650 and wished for a 1200 for most of the ride. My 2021 trip was canceled where I had planned on taking the RT. Looks like a great collection of bikes there!

I love my 2012 R1200GSA...It's a upgrade to my 2006 R1200GS, which I loved and put on 65k mi, more power, better suspension, more wind protection. Just did 2 long trips, fully loaded ~2000mi each. I did get better mileage w/ my 06.

such a great bike, I think the fuel mileage is do to the change in cam from the 05 a bit more power at a higher RMP ? I love the GSA though!

Thanks for posting this. If I could put in a request, I’d love some details on the reasons why you prefer the 2010-2012 models over the newer ones.
@TRCAdventures
@TRCAdventures Жыл бұрын
Thanks for checking out the video, there are a few reasons.from the earlier models. these have much improved breaks and ABS, the earlier models had a electric pump assist that has a high failure rate and does not work when you stall the bike, that can be dangerous off road and is problematic with spirited riding on road. The 2010-12 also have a bit better power and torque than previous. Over the newer models the 10-12 have a lower first gear and stronger switch gear, where some of the switches and grip dial are prone to break on the newer bike. Also the weight of the 10-12 they are much lighter than the newer models (still heavy) That and price! I will say this, the newer models do have better power and even better brakes and suspension than the 10-12. And you get a heap of gizmos on the newer bikes that tend to help sell bikes! If I were touring with some gravel roads then the newer the better, if I was touring with hard core off road and trails then the 2010-2012.

excellent choice, mine as just over that or just over 70,000 miles and runs like new or a bit better! they will go 350,000 with out too much trouble, just consider the maintenance that needs to happen things to consider with a bike at this mileage Clutch and clutch bearings are now do to be replaced (big job, if done then excellent) Valve check and adjustments will be needed at this stage New starter is recommended (BMW came out with a new starter, that may be on the 2012, if it turns over slowly its normally the starter not the battery (easy replacement 20min job) rear diff and linkage should be checked ((check the oil and then check for excessive slack in the drive line, by putting the bike on the center stand and putting the bike in gear (motor off) and moving the wheel back and forth, it will move a little but not excessive and no rattling)) not to bad of a job to replace (3 hrs) they are super reliable bikes, personally I would not hesitate to buy at this mileage and if all this work has been done, then I would jump at it! all BMW shops share maintenance history, so you can get the VIN and have a BMW service shop give you the history on the bike!

Range will always depend on how and where you ride and how you are loaded. For us two people and all gear about 300 miles and we are looking for a gas station. For most of my riding I can go closer to 400

How different this model year from the 2013 adventure? They look the same. Thanks for the video, this is great information.
@TRCAdventures
@TRCAdventures Жыл бұрын
Since 2013: The GS1200 engine was completely redesigned, most important was it became water cooled, they also are designed for a higher RPM with a different Cam, on the throttle they are quite quick! Other changes in the transmission a higher first gear, and some electronic up dates. It's possible the suspension was changed but I'm not totally sure about that. Big changes in 2013

@@TRCAdventures I am still a little bit confused. They changed the adventure type model in 2014. So the 2013 adventure is different from the older and newer models?
@TRCAdventures
@TRCAdventures Жыл бұрын
@@JD-xk9ef well now, BMW has me a little confused I think, I know the R1200GS received the updates in 2013 it is quite possible that the Adventure did not get the updates until 2014 a long with the RT. If that is true they are a close resemblance of the 2011 bike. Sorry for the confusion,
@TRCAdventures
@TRCAdventures Жыл бұрын
@@JD-xk9ef absolutely brilliant bikes. I did buy one of the water cooled RT's and the motor is quite impressive Still it would be a hard decision on the GSA to do over I would probably go with the air/water cooled bike so I would have $ to put serious suspension on it, I go I bit hard off road, for the street the newer the better! And of course if your wallet can take it the newer the better too!

@@TRCAdventures no worries, this makes more sense now. I believe the 2013 is the last air cooled GS adventure bike. I am just about to check out a 2013 model and found your video so thanks for sharing and quick replies.

Hi Mark, there is a-lot of debate on this subject, I feel it would come down to the intended use for the bike (off road or street) both bikes will do both, but a few things makes the older model a better choice for off road and the newer model better for on road. a sacrifice is made in either direction. for me: (more extreme off road) A simpler (basic) electronics package with less venerable parts A lower range 1st gear (adventure model) changed in 2013 at some point to have the same as the standard GS (officially I think this was considered the 2014 model year change) A lower RPM torque curve (in 2013 models the cam was changed and torque was moved up by 500RPM ) the 2013 bike for the GS and 2014 in most states for the GSA was all new, the partially water cooled bike (water boxer) the bikes became the same GSA and GS sharing the same geometry gear box and suspension Pre - 2013 the GSA is 1 inch longer, 1 inch taller and 1 wider, more travel, a more raked out front end and more fuel The power and reliability was increase in 2010 with a dual spark and twin cam head (more power and more torque same RPM) ABS pre 2009 bikes have a vary poor ABS/ linked breaking system that is prone to failure difficult to manage and complicated to deactivate. twin cam 2010 their are draw backs to the 2010-2013 bikes for off road the ESA system is rubbish (WAY TOO SOFT in any setting), I blew out the stock shocks, I also blew out the seals in the rear shock (from what I had in the video) I replaced with Ohlins shocks that is a solid choice. the newer bikes have cruise control, get better fuel economy, and much better suspension (even with hard off road use they seem to hold up quite well). the electronics package is prone to issues and the controller on the left handle can leave you stranded when it breaks (yep that happened) Sorry Ive gone on way too long...... for a standard GS I would get as new as I could, for a GS adventure I would still go with a 2010-2012 and do some upgrades with my saved $

I bought same model year and the same collor,now i m looking to sell. Rides like tractor. That engine does not like revs. It so heavy and for no reason tall. It s like you put a passenger on a tank. Now i m looking maybe to lower it down with springs or to sell.
@TRCAdventures
@TRCAdventures 5 ай бұрын
The BMW adventure is a heavy bike, and after that iteration they got heavier. They are also tall, the standard version is a bit lower due to having less travel in the suspension. If you still want a BMW but don't like the higher seat, an RT is a good choice much lower and still great on all road surfaces. The boxer engine in both are still tractor like (people hate me for saying that, but I always think it is a characteristic of a slow revving motor with more of its power lower in the rev range. Skip the RT if you don't like that!
