It should be no surprise to anyone that I hold the years of 2012-2016 in high regard when it comes to metal music. There's a chance that this is due to personal bias. I started listening to extreme metal around this time, I had copious amounts of time as a college student, and I felt like I was truly keeping up with new releases. Well, it's been about 10 years since this era, and I feel like the albums and bands not only hold up but issued in a renaissance of extreme metal for some of the bigger metal subgenres. In fact, I feel so strongly about this, that the purpose of this video is to make some key points as to why this is an important era for metal! I think it should be dubbed as a renaissance period and I feel really lucky to have started in this era and cut my teeth on the bands and releases that I talk about in this video.
Am I just a biased millennial or do you think the points that I make in this video have some validity? Weigh-in in the comments and let me know what your opinion of this time period is one way or the other! Thanks for watching, cheers!
Obviously I don't own the music and the mighty Khemmis deserve all the credit!

Great topic, i was in a similar position with having more time to listen to albums during that timeframe. I was in medical school 2013 to 2017 and i used what was left of my student loan to buy albums. One point i’d like to add is Decibel Magazines contribution to the metal scene. I believe the Decibel Magazine tour started in 2012 and often would be headlined by the previous year’s album of the year artist. They also did great interviews and reviews which helped me choose albums to purchase. You joked about pitchfork but i would read their monthly Show No Mercy column. Anyway thanks for the great video.

@@rezmetalpodcaster thanks for watching Rez and for the comment! Good call on the Decibel tour, that was definitely a factor in a lot of these legendary bands getting the chance to tour around the US. Their top 40 albums list I think does a lot to shape the narrative too. In hindsight, a lot of the albums I talked about were featured high on their lists. Cheers 🍻

I admit, I was a little dismissive of this idea at first, but I think you make a valid case with some fantastic releases to back it up. Surgical Steel is a big one for me. I think it’s one of the greatest comebacks of ALL time and I agree with you, really one of Carcass’s finest hours. Khemmis, Pallbearer, Mgla and Sub Rosa are other great examples. Yeah, I’m with you msn. Hey and don’t forget Insomnium- Shafows of a Dying Sun & Winters Gate 2014 & 2016 respectively. I believe Devin Townsend also released some good stuff in there. And Opeth’s Pale Communion (2014).

@@wadeconrad5573 thanks for watching Wade and for coming around a little on the main argument! If I had dove into some more of the albums released during this era Insomnium would definitely have been mentioned. Shadows of a Dying Sun is my favorite of theirs and Winter’s Gate is a great ambitious album too! I just watched Alan’s response and there might be a follow up to his follow up, so more albums will be mentioned! Cheers man 🍻

Interesting topic Logan! I was not very tuned into the Metal scene during those years so I'm not sure if I agree or disagree. I'm gonna look into it, so look for a reply video in about a week.

Thanks Alan, appreciate you watching! And seeing a response would be awesome, the goal of this video was definitely to generate discussion and to see if I'm just looking at this time period through a bias lens. I'd be curious about your opinion on the matter! cheers 🍻

The 2010s had a great amount of doom metal albums come out and while it probably had a few other genres bring out some good albums I definitely associate it with doom getting more expansive. There were a lot of blackened doom bands coming out and sludge was also building up a decent bit. Stand outs from that time for me are: "Despond" by Loss "Blood Eagle" by Conan "II" by Hell The Hell/Mizmor split "Foundations of Burden" by Pallbearer "All The Waters of The Earth Turn To Blood" and "Christs, Redeemers" by The Body "Heathen" by Thou But I like being into metal right now because there are tons of youtube channels, forums and streaming services to dig for music and people make uploads of albums and demos that a while back were not as accessible. Between that and the vast amount of reissues popping up now we're in a good spot to discover metal from now to the birth of it. One problem I find lately though is there is so much stuff to take in that I wound up giving up on finding new stuff occasionally to listen to classics again.

@@That667Guy great call on all those doom albums! I’m a pretty big fan of when doom gets crossed with more extreme metal subgenres and am definitely a fan of when stoner elements get mixed in! Absolutely agreed that we’re in an unrivaled era of access but it feels a little like Pandora’s box at times. It’s harder to focus on specific albums and scenes because of how much is out there nowadays both new and old. Great comment and thanks for watching 🍻!

I watched 2-3 DEATH rankings today. I wish it was best - to worst, ranking. Thinking about buying one of their CDs. Oh, also noticed that the singer/founder died rather young. 34.

I will definitely do a Death ranking soon, it’s been overdone but for good reason imo. Honestly you can’t go wrong with any of their albums. Thanks for watching 🍻

It's all personal perception but from where I stand early 2010s were among the worse years for metal. Ever since the 70s there were constantly new scenes and subgenres emerging. That ended in the late 2000s when the (in)famous deathcore & djent scenes emerged. Ever since we've been rehashing the old sounds

You’re absolutely right about it being personal perception, though I definitely agree that it’s when a lot of recycling of the old genres began. Because I oblivious to this though, I loved these albums all the more! Thanks for watching Count 🍻

I don’t know if I would use the word renaissance I would go with resurgence. And it’s a bit difficult or different to not go by year to year, but just looking at the comparison of 2011 and 2012. The quality of albums in my opinion got better. I noticed there was rather large cross section of diversity between 2011 and 2012 in terms of genres. It almost seemed as Metal had a very popular year in 2012 and that carried over to 2013. So then you come to 2014 and it’s a lot like 2011 not to much mind blowing or quality albums in terms of numbers. But then 2015 killed it again soooo… I wondered in terms of just the music industry if there was any indication as to why 2012 was more notable or different than any other year. I came up with 2012 had the highest purchases of downloads or peak of music downloads sales and that number has been steadily declining since 2012.

I feel resurgence would be appropriate, I just feel it was the reimagining of a couple classic subgenres: mainly doom, death, and black metal for a new generation (us millennials lol). I also notice that trend of every third year being the best year 🤷‍♂️, don’t know if I can explain that. Thanks for watching!
