For many metal fans, Extreme Metal is heavy metal. Death, Morbid Angel, Carcass, Entombed, Darkthrone, Dimmu Borgir, Opeth, guttural vocals, blast beats, lyrics about death and the occult …. we couldn’t tell the story of metal without it. And so Banger Films presents Extreme Metal, the latest chapter in Metal Evolution, the biggest-ever TV series on the history of heavy metal and hard rock. Hosted by Sam Dunn and based on Banger’s groundbreaking “Heavy Metal Family Tree”, Extreme Metal features new interviews with Death Metal, Grindcore and Black Metal’s most influential sonic architects and a global journey from Tampa to the UK, Norway and France's Hellfest to investigate the history, myths and intricacies of this most innovative and transgressive subgenre. How extreme is it? Too extreme for some TV networks! Which is why Banger Films turned to crowdfunding-it was support from the metal community around the world through an IndieGogo campaign which made Metal Evolution: Extreme Metal a reality.

Jesse Gmitro I think what he meant was that it was kinda on the cheaper side, CoF spend a lot of time and money (too much in my opinion) into theatrics. I don't like them, they're like off brand black metal, but they are extremely theatrical to the point that the music takes a backseat.

Patrick William The cheesiness of extreme metal (the over the top lyrical violence and technical wankery and over produced sounds of death metal, the corpse paint and overly satanic and occult lyricism and intentionally subpar production of black metal) is part of the fun, and anyone who can't see that is missing that enjoyment.

And I am that teacher-assistant to be, listening to both things like these extreme metal offshoots and things like Guillaume Dufay, Beatles, Nick Drake, The Association, Bach, Charlie Christian, Charlie Parker, Steeleye Span, Dream Theater, Genesis, Jethro Tull....boundaries are there to tear down, not being "true" into a genre.

Really stupid quote: You don' t just grab a guitar and start playing whatever you fancy. Or do you think that a metal band just does that? Grab a guitar, start playing and suddenly realize " Hey dude, this sounds like death metal, jut by pure random chance, LOL, I actually wanted to play a christmas carol" So, musicians do not know what they play, right? And genres were not invented by musicians, but by the Fake News press, correct? Because, musicians know fuck all about playing music, right?

In the darkness, we see more than black That could be either the most metal, or the most melancholic lyric depending on how you interpret it. I like those kind of lyrics, the ones that make you think and allow you to interpret however you’d like rather than just like death metal lyrics about murder or whatever.

Absolutely. Ive always preached there is more than one way to emote 'extreme' music...not just speed and downtuning distortion. Although I love and create music under the "grindcore" umbrella, trick is to do something in the vein, but different. Like horn parts against a 295 bpm beat, for example. Its limitless...and fun to experiment.

I got to meet with Gojira last autumn and chatted about this, actually. They all mentioned to me, individually, that they felt extremely fortunate to do what they loved for a living. In the clip here, I don't think that Duplantier (Joe) was saying that the lives of the band members were brutal, I think he was talking about the totality of the human experience, across the species, which would stick pretty firmly with his general lyrical themes. They weren't moody, maudlin, or angst-riddled at all. They were all very friendly, bright, and engaging guys.

Quotes from famous musician and High ranking Church of Satan member and very close friend to Anton LaVey - King Diamond "Satanism is about the Powers of the Unknown. I have had hundreds of strange supernatural experiences with the occult, the other side, the beyond, whatever you want to call it that proves there is a spiritual world that can cross over into our world. Satanism is a life philosophy so within it you can have your own religion, any religion you want. Or take from various religions or your own whatever makes you happy. I have my own beliefs and Religiously Satan on a spiritual level stands for the Powers of Darkness, the Powers of the Unknown which are always all around us at all times. This is the best way to talk about these Spirits and Powers. Not a god or a devil as both of them are christian god's and that has nothing to do with Satanism. Of course there are different types of satanism. And I never wear gold as that is not healthy for you! Must need something bad and use that during ritual then you might be able to get help from these powers I believe are all around us. But that is only if they like you. I do not believe in the two christians beings god or the Devil, I believe in the Powers of the Unknown, Powers of Darkness, The Powers of the Occult what ever name you want to use. . I have done Satanic Rituals and have seen and heard spirits. Some people like to call "Them" God or the Devil or whatever, but I do not believe there is all one good and one all bad power. I believe there are many, many different Spirits and Powers that exist and that they are not good or evil, like humans they have both inside of them and I always treat them with the highest amount of respect and feel that respect returned by Them. It is massive mutual respect. Not Power, but Powers, Big difference. I believe we are one and the same me and these Unknown Forces. You really have to respect them for the incredible power they have. I believe they come to those who they feel can handle it and who will be faithful believers." In the song "Welcome Princess of Hell" you hear me singing to these spirits and powers and they sing back to me. They came to me to let me know they are here for me on my journey and that they are behind me and that they wish me good luck so I see them as my protectors almost like guardian angels. We all live several lives so that our powers/souls can grow in order to reach a higher plane and join with something greater. Our powers live in a human shell several times that will enable us to go on to a new life form a higher plane of being or join one day with a larger greater force. But 99 percent of the population live by the Satanic Philosophy whether they know it or not. As Anton LaVey even told me that Satanism is simply a life philosophy and NOT a religion. Satanism is based on logic and things that are proven which is why it could never be a religion as religion is based on things that cannot be proven. And that’s why I say that these powers of darkness are always welcome in my home. It’s as if the powers of the unknown came and said ‘Hey, we will stay with you and help you.’ That’s what I feel.” When I almost died during surgery I saw my body below as a demon tried to enter my soul and I had to fight him! These things are very real! Personally I do not use electrical lighting at home and on my Satanic Altar or in the studio when I record vocals, only black candles as electrical lighting drives away the spirits and I love having them near me. People who see Satanism from the Christian view point are not treating these powers with respect and that is very dangerous. I once actually summoned a spirit in order to prove they are real to a girl who doubted and Satan came. My wife will not look in our mirror in fear something will come out. In Satanism you are your own God. LaVey felt and I agree that we are all individuals born with different needs and views and so he felt everyone should make up their own mind about what to believe in spiritually if anything at all which is why he left a huge void in the Satanic Bible when it came to spirituality or any kind of religious beliefs and so within the Satanic Philosophy a person can still be a Christian if that fulfills their spiritual needs. Satan also means the Opposite, Inverted, Reversed which is why we wear the Satanic crosses and pentagrams. Satan means the opposite of religion. Satanism is living out your feelings and instincts without feeling it is a sin, enjoy yourself while you are here now while you can and have your own individual beliefs. One thing I consider almost mandatory though is believing there are powers around us. And you can use these powers to help yourself or those you care about. Or throw these powers at people in a negative way. I am not religious at all but you can say I am spiritual due to my experiences and beliefs. The Satanic bible is not really a bible because a bible is for religion so it should be called a book of philosophy instead. Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the law. When people see the word ‘Satan’ they see only negative. Satan is not only bad, to me. It represents both sides of everything. I don’t believe in the Christian devil. “Christianity has both God and the devil. I believe there is neither of these two. I believe in the powers of the unknown, which I have experienced many times. I know that rituals work. I don’t do them often because you can easily misuse them. They will get back at you if you don’t respect them. Rituals can channel the forces that surround us all the time but I respect the powers and will not abuse them in any way. The Satanic Bible is 70 percent Philosophy and 30 percent magic. Satan is the power of the universe. Satan to me is the Powers of Darkness, not a man with horns. Some people think Satanism is what the Christian church portrays it to be. If you are as bad and as evil as you can be and you think that’s Satanism then you have become part of the Christian religion. That is Christian Satanism which is not what I am about at all. I know these powers are good because they saved my life many times!

Great vid man, appreciate the hard work you obviously put into making this. Brings back so many memories from my younger years & a music scene I was very much into. Although over the years since then, I’m talking everything pre ‘92 ish. I’ve been through many other music scenes since. Now I’m in my mid to late 40’s and can honestly say, I’m totally glad I’ve been a part of ALL the music scenes I’ve been through. There’s been many. Always have been, and always will continue to listen to Scum by Napalm Death. I’m sure they’ve done many better ‘musically’ albums, but Scum has a particular place in my heart. I’m glad it was covered in the vid. 10/10 documentary film bro.

For those metalheads that speak spanish (either as your mother language, or if you learnt it later) there's an amazing book by a spanish guy named Salva Rubio, and the book's title is "Metal Extremo: 30 Años de Oscuridad (1981-2011)". Translated roughly it's name could be "Extreme Metal: 30 Years of Obscurity (1981-2011)". If you have read Keith Kahn Harris' "EXTREME METAL: MUSIC AND CULTURE ON THE EDGE", Rubio's book is a bit similar, only without the complex sociological lexicon and background theory. Both books are amazing reads. However I do think that Rubio's book makes it easier to grasp and truly understand to those who aren't sociologists, or philosophers, or anthropologists (or social scientists in general) just what in the hell extreme metal is. Like I said, the book is in spanish, but it's an amazing read. So if you can, or want to, check it out.

Sure enough, every weekend there was another episode and another till the end of the series. When I checked at my local music store to see if this series was available on DVD and found it, I jumped on it immediately. gramm cool doesn't matter if you don't think it matters. "Cool" is one of those abstract concepts that's there to make people feel as if they must fit into a certain image or style in order to be what they want. In reality, it's a high school level of ignorance and fear mongering that most mature and intelligent people should be able to move past in order to be who they want, and the same goes for metal bands. Just because you're trying to be "cool" doesn't mean your music is worth anything. Asking alexandria tries to be cool, but I don't like their music. Gojira (I'm pretty sure) doesn't care about that but their music is awesome. Dont try to be cool, just be yourself and make awesome music.

Erick Mazur A metal (from Greek μέταλλον métallon, "mine, quarry, metal"[1][2]) is a material (an element, compound, or alloy) that is typically hard when in solid state, opaque, shiny, and has good electrical and thermal conductivity. Metals are generally malleable-that is, they can be hammered or pressed permanently out of shape without breaking or cracking-as well as fusible (able to be fused or melted) and ductile (able to be drawn out into a thin wire).[3] About 91 of the 118 elements in the periodic table are metals; the others are nonmetals or metalloids. Some elements appear in both metallic and non-metallic forms. No, they're not.

Anyone watching without the subtitles is seriously missing out I smell Blayne Smith NGL But as always in the years since you made this it’s only gotten more important and respected and I hope one day a revised edition release of this series will come with this episode as the last hurrah before the new family tree emerges to shape the history of this genre again

That featuring Dimmu Borgirs “progenies of the great apocalypse” video brought a tear to my eye. And some Cradle of Filth immediately after was the arsenic icing on the cake.

It's not important how fast u go or how much of a tough guy you are. It's about how far your willing to put your emotions into the music that determines how extreme you are.

extreme metal saved my life. I was into Poison when I listened for the 1st time the album Harmony Corruption of Napalm Death back in 1990. good times.

Like the 'band' poison? Or you were literally poisoning yourself with like heroin or something?

The P is capitalized, so I'm going to have to guess that he's referring to the band, which is worse than taking literal poison.
