@katekramer76792 жыл бұрын
@@blackdahlia42 I assumed it was because they had a somewhat captive audience and saw it as an opportunity for proselytizing. It doesn't matter if the audience knows Mormons are parodied in the musical. Proselytizing isn't really about converting outsiders. It's about reinforcing to the musical that the outside world is bad and safety can only be found within the religion. Encountering hundreds of skeptical theater attendees is a great way to send a "The outside world hates you" message to a missionary.
@ameliakidman68352 жыл бұрын
@@blackdahlia42 Yeah, it's usually because of both of those reasons, (coming from a Mormon) I've known of missionaries who just took it as another opportunity to share the Book of Mormon with the few people who were nterested in the actual religion. I like that Mormon missionaries have such a recognizable costume when they’re out in the field that they are easy to spot coming. Around here they often have black backpacks and ride bicycles as well. But no one dresses like that except the Mormons. I wish the JW’s dressed similarly. They’ve become a little trickier around here.

Michelle Barnes they wear black backpacks and ride bicycles where I’m at too! I actually thought it was normal for Mormons? Really I just have two beefs about this song. One is that Missionaries travel in twos, they don't go to doors alone. The other is that in the BoM Jesus did not live there. He ministered after he died in Jerusalem. Those complaints aside I still love listening to this song.

As a native Utahn, with many LDS relatives, co'workers, ex-classmates and neighbors growing up, I can honestly say that this musical is a masterpiece! And every song from it that I've seen and heard makes me smile! ^_^

We had two elders (ironically just two 19 year old kids despite the name) over for dinner at my gf's parents house the other weekend (they're LDS obviously) and I'm cracking up because I'm sure about 90% of what was sang, at some point came up during our discussion at dinner. I really hope they start showing this musical again now that Broadway is back open.

Just spoke with a Mormon male in Louisville, KY. He knew the info in the Book of Mormon, but nothing outside it. He did not know that a Brigham Young statue had painted thrown on it. Our discussion about polygamy was insane. He justified it by saying an angel told Joseph Smith to do it, and said angel told them to stop it, He had no idea about all the bad things Brigham Young did.
