In this video I show you how to replace your brakes on a 2013-2019 Ford Escape (Kuga) The pad replacement and rotor replacement is very typical. If you have done a set of brakes before this one is no different than most but I will walk you through their replacement bolt by bolt.
The rear of a 2017-2019 Escape has an electronic parking brake. I was working on a 2016 so I did not cover this. This is the procedure to put the rear brakes in Maintenance mode:
-Turn the ignition on but don't start the car
-Put the accelerator to the floor and hold it down
-Push and hold DOWN the parking brake lever
-Turn the ignition off
-Turn the ignition on
-Hold the accelerator and parking brake until the vehicle displays Maintenance mode on the information center.
To return the rear brakes to their normal mode:
-Turn the ignition on but don't start the car
-Put the accelerator to the floor and hold it.
-Pull UP on the parking brake
-Turn the ignition off
-Turn the ignition on
-Hold the accelerator and parking brake until you stop hearing noise from the rear calipers. Then pump up the brake pedal and start the vehicle how you normally would.

With the help of your video, I was able to change today -- all by myself -- the rear brake pads & rotors of my 2014 Transit Connect. Never tried something like that before; I've stuck to doing oil changes and filters only. Ventured into unknown territory after I got tired dropping $750 to have a dealer shop do a set for me (it's highway robbery down here in the South with these shops). Thanks for the clear, concise info!! ✊🏾

Thanks for this video, it really helped. Did the rears today, rotors and pads. Took me an hour and 45 only because each side had a very stuck bolt. Just wanted to pass on my experience. 2017 Escape Titanium. Only 28,000 miles on it and I am original owner. Front brakes are in great shape. As I took apart the rears I discovered that the inner pads on both sides had zero pad left. Outers were more than half way worn out. So that tells me they have it set to use the rears first, then the fronts if needed. Never had a vehicle that did that before? Very mellow Michigan driver here who rarely has to stomp on the brakes. I tried the links here for parts but didn't have much luck so I went through Rock Auto. Got both rotors and pads in a rust resistant Raybestos Element 3 for $121 including shipping. Was quoted $450 to have them done at Belle Tire.
@coloradostrong
@coloradostrong 2 жыл бұрын
Rear worn out first? Same thing on a 2018 S or SE Escape my brother has. He had to get both rear rotors and pads at about 34000 miles, while the front is not too bad. The rear was metal-on-metal. Wonder if it is due to your weather in Michigan, as he lives in the north also. And once you get that metallic powder from your brakes on the vehicle, it will melt into the paint, rims and bumper, and then rust. Nasty job trying to get _that_ stuff off the body.

@@Derbycityborn Raybestos Element 3 Rotors and pads if you want to do it yourself. You could even see how much labor would be only if your brought the parts. Like I said, the only issue was one caliper bolt on both sides was a pain to get out but a bit of frustration was well worth the $200 savings. I bypassed the electronic parking brake how they said, and to compress the piston i used a large clamp with a small board in between to protect it as I turned it in.

Thanks for your clear demo. Two years ago my ford escape 2014, both front and rear brake pad/rotor jobs were done at Canadian Tire. After shortly, I started to hear a squeaking sound left rear caliper. A couple of weeks ago, the caliper started to leak oil. I followed your demo and ordered parts etc. What I realized was that the caliper and especially, the brake holder so dirty-shop didn't clean it, just dumbed parts. Understand that hard to find an honest mechanic and have to do your job.

Attention: there is a known issue where the slide pin in the calipers did NOT get enough lube at the factory and are prone to sticking once you press the brakes. The fix is to take the caliper slide pins out, clean them, lube them, and put them back in. My back brakes wore almost completely away and the front brakes werent even half gone. That solved it for me. Its worth checking them out if you are seeing premature wear.

Wounder why you did not replace calipers with re-built calipers. Back in the day when you could buy rebuild kits, I always rebuilt calipers on break jobs. Every time I put my honing stone in the cylinder I found a little pile of rust at the bottom.. Brake fluid is hygroscopic and brings a little water into the cylinder. Over time the moisture causes rust that settles. When you push a piston back in, it is scrunched over all that pile of rust and will most likely go into the neoprene seal. In a few months, the seal will start leaking and you will wish you had just replaced (or rebuilt) the caliper. Otherwise, this is a great video. I'm 67 now and haven't done a brake job in 10 years, so I thought I'd check out a KZfaq first. I was a back-yard mechanic when younger and did 20-30 brake jobs per year on weekends for coworker, friends and family. I my experience with the cylinder rust is not minimal.

behind both my back rotors those metal plates corroded so much that they had to be removed. Will that create a problem if they're not on and if so what are they called and where can I buy them?
@RepairGeek
@RepairGeek 2 жыл бұрын
They are called backing plates or brake dust shields. Your best bet would be to get them from Ford. They are pretty cheap at around $10-$15 a piece. Generally it doesn't cause a problem if they are not on there. You have a higher likelihood of rocks caught between the brakes and the rotor causing a squealing noise until they come out.

@@RepairGeek thank you. Is is hard to replace them by a mechanic? just trying to figure out the cost not to be overcharged if it's a fairly simply thing

Nice Video especially for the first timer like me. What did you use to remove the 7 mm bolt? Is there any alternative on how to remove that bolt?

There are no 7mm bolts to remove. It's a Torx 45.

Ok so one thing you did not mention, is this a 1.6 turbocharged 4WD and was it made in USA or Mexico, there is a big difference on what you buy for replace ment.

Great video. So I click on your posted links for pads and rotors for my 1.5 L Ford Escape SE 2017 an amazon is telling me they don't fit my vehicle?
@RepairGeek
@RepairGeek 3 жыл бұрын
Don't trust Amazon's parts fitment. I looked these up. If you click the correct link you should get the correct part. As long as the wrong pads aren't in the correct box. Trust me I've seen it. Box is the right number but has the wrong parts inside.

I also have a 2017 escape se and my mechanic wants to know if we have 300mm rotors or 320 and I can’t find out what one mine takes anywhere. He is having me but my own parts so I don’t want to buy the wrong size.

@@italianqueen5023 I used the links here to buy the parts and did the brake rotors and pad replacement myself. It has been working just fine since then.

If you have electronic parking brakes they need to be put into service mode. This escape has a manual hand brake. The procedure for service mode is in the pinned comment at the top of the comments section.

Hi, I have changed the brakes on my ford that is almost identical to these and have never needed a special tool, I just use an “F” clamp to compress the piston and then slid it back on, and otherwise the steps are identical.

Yep, works like a charm. C clamp here and used a small piece of wood on top of the piston to prevent nicks.
