2013 Chevy equinox timing chain, water pump and crank seal replacement! MOTOR out of the car.
make sure to hit the bell icon so you will know when i post the removal and install of this engine.
I am removing a blown motor and replacing it with a motor from a salvage yard. I am doing the wear items while the motor is out of the vehicle. This would be a tedious job with the motor in the vehicle.

I did this job on a customer car last month. I had never done an internal water pump ecotec. I’ve done Hondas, ecoboosts, hemis, and Nissans. The books said it’s a 6 hour job. Took me 12 with the engine in the car. Would have rather done timing on a Mercedes. IF you’re doing this in the car and NOT replacing timing components, the three most essential things you’ll need is a small magnet that fits in a 10mm deep wall socket, the water pump gear holder to keep the engine from jumping time, and a lot of patience. Also to note IF you’re doing this with the engine in the car, make note of the orientation of the water pump pulley when you pull it out or you’ll be trying to line it up with the timing gear blindly since you can’t see the holes even with an inspection mirror.

Did this job all the way to the pump and back in a 14 gmc terrain in 8-9 hours in one day because my manager promised it would be done by the end of the day the next day. After I told him, the chain is shot, and I'd be surprised if the car ran property ever again. Well, I got it done, and it ran great, and the customer was extremely happy to be heading home from being out of state.

Just did this Job yesterday, Got it done in the vehicle and didnt have to remove the motor mount, Pretty straight forward, just have to get that top bolt off the oil pump/timing cover next to the Tensioner pulley which is easiest from the bottom. Big tip that saves me fighting the bottom sprockets for timing, set the cam timing up, then UNDO the intake or exhaust cam, roll it toward the other while keeping the chain tight, then do the crank sprocket and just roll the cam sprocket back into place :)

Some extra tips to anyone doing this. There is a bolt on the bottom of the water pump. 13mm socket. Its to drain coolant before removing the thermostat housing and and crossover pipe. To fill the engine fill at the upper radiator hose port on front right and fill at upper radiator hose itself per Chevy service manual. Its also advised to spend extra money 250 before taxes to get the complete kit with both timing chain kit and balancer chain kit and water pump and do the complete job. The plastic guides can and will disintegrate.
@justinpass8154
@justinpass8154 Жыл бұрын
It also takes less time to do it inside the vehicle. Half the time as opposed to doing it per the service manual way and pulling the engine out of the vehicle. All you need in terms of tools is 1/4 inch drive 10mm and 13mm; 3/8 drive 13mm and 1/2 drive 22 for the removal of the wheel, 21mm for removal of the crank pulley bolt, 18mm for removal of the cam gears, 32 or 1 1/4 inch socket to remove timing chain tensioner and 15mm impact universal joint and 6 inch extension to remove the catalytic converter and lastly, a 13mm wrench, 10mm wrench and 22mm wrench.

As far as the 100° goes, everyone knows what 90°is so when your going for 100° imagine your breaker bar or ratchet your using is your dial depending on room just move it 90° or from 12 o'clock to 3 o'clock plus a bit to get to 100. Tourge 22pounds then turn ratchet handle 90° plus tad to get to 100.

Ok yikes you’ve done a ton of work so far. There are many different part numbers for your chain from different manufacturers. If you bought one for your year and model car, then I can only assume that you have the right one. Next with the tensioner loose you have to put the chain on the cam sprocket first, making sure the timing marks are all lined up properly, then angle the sprocket such that the bottom of the bore goes on the shaft first then you can kind of lever the sprocket onto the shaft. If you had your cams approximately 10 and 2 and the timing marks on the sprocket lined up with the colored links and the crank sprocket is lined up with the timing mark and the colored link then your timing will be good. Finally your p0016 code is a generic code that deals with bank 1 and tells you that the cam and crank aren’t seeing each other at the proper time. (I’m sure you read that only also). Other then verifying the timing marks and chain links are all lined up properly and the sensors you’ve replaced are good it sounds like you may need to take it in. Sorry I can’t help much more then that.

I'm putting this back together right now, and I have a question that I was hoping you might know the answer to. When I pulled the timing cover off, I found what appears to be a race of some sort. I can't see anything else it might have gone to. Is there perhaps something of that nature that fits into the back of the timing cover? It seems about the same size as the hole on the back, but also seems like it would have to be forced in. I just don't want to leave anything out.

I appreciate the response. I'm not sure if it'll let me send attachments. Perhaps I can finagle some way to drop you a link or something. I don't have notifications on, so I just saw this. At any rate, you've earned a sub. I found a lengthy video that gave me a little more insight on the entire process, but your torque specs really brought everything full circle. One more question if it isn't too much trouble. I did end up putting it back together. I'm sure you know the story. The timing chain definitely was due for an overhaul. The top of the top guide was cut completely off, and the black plastic guide was in pieces. Once I replaced everything it started up and ran fine. However, once it got up to temperature, it started jumping at extended stops again and dying. It starts right back up, and as long as you give it gas or are driving, it's fine. Any idea what could be the problem?
@whatsnextgarage

@@pamgoulette3145 that’s a tough one. Does the engine throw a code? Maybe something in the throttle position sensor, but that’s a guess. Judging by the excess silicone that’s squeezed out between the block and bed plate, 05:50 someone has definitely molested this engine in the past. I cringe at the thought of how much silicone could be squeezed out inside the engine. If this was my car’s engine, and considering the engine is already on the stand, I would pull the oil pan to see if silicone squeezed inside the engine. It would be awful to do all this work, to only have a chunk of silicone make it’s way to the oil pickup, and starve the engine.
@whatsnextgarage

I agree!! I did one oil pan where I put a pretty tall bead on the flange and worried about the squeeze out on the inside. That vehicle is still rolling after two years so it worked out. Lately though I have been much more sparing with the silicone. 😄👍

Why did you put the tie wraps on the water pump sprocket? I have a dilemma with my Captiva 2.4 ecotec LE5, I have it since new, it stopped working last week in the morning heard a rattle sound by the passenger side right, the SUV when down in RPM until is shut off by itself. I tried once to start it and did not work. I haven't started since them. Don't want to create more catastrophic damage. The car has 180,000 miles, the cost of taking it to the shop for replacing the time chain is quoted by phone is between 1500 to 2000usd. I notice that the whole engine is about $3200 in Autozone. Beside fixing the time chain, I also know that I need to change serpentine belt, tensioner and may be the water pump since engine is all ready down like you. If choose to fix the timing chain. I imaging that the whole would increase the cost of repairing it to 2500 usd. So would I go with autozone option better? I want to repair the car, but not sure what's best option base on the current mile of the engine. (180,000miles).
@whatsnextgarage
@whatsnextgarage 2 жыл бұрын
The wire tie was installed so that the chain didn’t come off of the balancing shaft sprockets when I pulled the water pump. I would imagine that the auto zone engine is just a short block that you then would have to swap your accessories onto. As far as one vs the other it’s hard to say, but as you have more work done the auto zone option becomes more cost effective. Maybe slowly turn the engine over with a wrench attached to the crank bolt, with the battery disconnected, slowly rotate and see if the engine turns over smoothly. If it turns over smoothly then perhaps the damage is minimal, but if the motor rotates and stops then there is an issue. I am posting the engine removal video tonight so perhaps you can see what’s all involved with removing it from the car.
