In general I think Bolt should be legal, although the fact that the rebalanced Izzet Wizards deck is one of the best in the format and it could easily play Bolt scares me.

Unholy Heat isn't 2013 Jund, but you could run that in place of Lightning Strike!

I’m honestly not sure if unholy heat would be better than lightning strike in this case, since it doesn’t have a to-the-face mode. Like, it’s definitely a better card? But it also can’t burn, which this deck sometimes needs (as proven in game 3)

I left my comment while Seth was doing the deck tech, and I didn't think about the direct damage which definitely came in clutch there. I now retract my reccomendation of unholy heat.

If you do a direct challenge on MTG arena, you can play with banned cards. That way you can get past the banned Lightning Bolt issue and have your opponent play the most 2023est of decks

While playing a standard jund brew, I’ve also been saying “basically” a lot. Voltage Surge is _basically_ Lightning Bolt, right? Gala Greeters is _basically_ Tarmogoyf, right? Annihilating Glare is _basically_ Fatal Push, right? Wrenn and Realmbrealer is _basically_ Wrenn and Six, right? :D

At the end of Return to Ravnica, beginning of Theros. I played Dimir Mill. Consuming Aberration, Mirko Vosk, Nighthowler, Wight of Precinct Six, Aqueous Form, and a bunch of Mill cards. I once beat a modern Emrakul, the Aeons Torn deck in a best of 3 with my Standard Mill deck. He had 4 of them in this deck. Had the whole shop watching us duke it out. After that I got a minor sponsorship from the shop to play decks during FNM with cards I couldnt afford.

I loved old Jund. And going 3-4 with cards that are 10 years behind the curve (with worse replacements) and one of those losses being Mill, which wasn't a thing to prepare for back then, that record is great!

This reminded me of some of my earliest days in magic, when my buddy and I both played Jund in standard. It was comprised of bloodbraid, sprouting thrinax, putrid leech, blightning, lightning bolts, raging ravine, maelstrom pulse, and broodmate dragon. I know a deck like this isn't viable today, but I'd love to be able to play something like that again. Bloodbraid cascade into blightning was the best thing you could do in standard back then, and it was amazing when it happened (unless you were on the receiving end).

Reasons why I play commander. Sure you can have broken madness. But it's a lot harder to ensure you're casting a One Ring when it's one out of 99, rather than 3 out of 60 (and 4 Karns with one more One Ring in the side board).

Pauper has also been utterly broken by new cards every other set. Artisan and Pioneer are the only viable formats if you wanna play 1v1 and not get wrecked because your opponent drew and played a single unfair card before you drew and played yours.

I think one of the big things about Dark Confidant is that he goes face. I think Tenacious Underdog fills the Dark Confidant role better then arena, though it might be a little too 2023...

Jund was the only deck in modern (at the time) that could beat splinter twin. I do recall when goyf first came out, wasn’t worth $0.20. We use to rip them up & about two years later… $100 each.

It’s the same reason Scavenging Ooze is in the same deck as Tarmogoyf. Jund isn’t a synergy deck, all of its cards are individually powerful. The idea of Jund is to trade favorably in the early game (ideally 2-for-1s, but often trading a Bolt or Thoughtseize for an actually valuable card), then have better topdecks than your opponents. Deathrite was simply the best 1-mana creature in Jund colors because of how flexible it is, as Goblin Guide is a little too committed to Aggro and Ragavan didn’t exist yet. Scooze, Deathrite, and Goyf all compete for the same resource (the graveyard), but a skilled Jund player knows how to balance resources.

I actually think my mono black devotion grey merchant deck on MTGO is what got Deathrite Banned in modern. The card was busted for sure; ramp, devotion, wincon, graveyard hate... It really is an entire deck problem solver at 1cmc and we DESTROYED modern with it for a month at least.

Jund is definitely competitive in Historic, it's just this list is lacking big time. I'm not saying to play Bowmasters or Ring but you need better/more removal and things to beat Ring like Questing Beast and main deck Tear Asunder. Deathrite Shaman is definitely still playable with fetches also just not as good.

He basically gets time walker every game by the tapped lands, arena is nowhere near as good as bob, strike is not comparable to bolt - you can’t really call this deck 2013 Jund. It is as close as you can get though, with the cards available on arena (I still would have made several changes though like push over strike)

@@Enja_Near my point was he should of done 2013 standard jund. It's much more comparable. You just just swap 50% of a deck and say it's "basically " the same. The swaps don't translate to being the same deck. Strike vs bolt is massively different cards. Ie bolt has seen play in every format its legal. Strike shows up in standard sometimes and never in modern, legacy, pauper, etc. Him coming to some sort of "conclusion " at the end is likewise problematic. Because he is using a very skewed lens.
