( www.TFLtruck.com ) The 2013 Ram1500 Sport Crew Cab is a bad ass looking pickup. But will it tow as good as it looks? Watch this Ike Gauntlet episode 5 to find out.
The 2014 Toyota Tundra Pickup is built to tow. But is it better than the Ram 1500 We decided to find out by putting both pickups up against each other in a Mega Mashup Sequel. Once again both trucks tow the old Lincoln Continental Mark V Diamond in the Rough up one of the steepest and highest American Highways. From Dillion, Colorado to the Eisenhower Tunnel U.S. I-70 climbs 8 miles to a maximum elevation of 11,158 feet or 3,401 meters. That's enough elevation and grade to test the most powerful of pickups. Is the Toyota Tundra up to the task of towing a over 7,000 pounds up to the top of the tunnel?
In fact according to Toyota this pickup can tow up to 9,600 pounds. That's enough weight to need a commercial truckers license in most states. In this first TFLtruck Ike Gauntlet video review we test the truck up the Ike Gauntlet see how fast it will tow around 7,200 pounds of old American Luxury car plus people and gear 8 miles up a 7 percent grade to the Eisenhower tunnel with the help of our friend Kent from ( www.MrTruck.com ).

just be happy the pinion nut didn't come off while towing up that hill. My 05 Ram 1500 Daytona edition with only 76000 miles lost the pinion nut while just driving not in tow. Destroyed the rear axle and all gears inside. Cost me $1000 to fix it myself. I am now the proud owner of a 07 Toyota Tundra

Once again great review guys! I know you cant please everyone & you never said you were Consumer Reports. I own a 13 RAM 1500 Longhorn and live just outside of Denver, I towed my 4 ton toy hauler with 1500 lbs of gear over the Ike a dozen times this summer without problems. True its cooler in the fall but its always cool up there even in the summer. My neighbors FX4 with EcoBoost couldn't even keep up with me towing a 6500 lb camper, I think they are all great trucks.

I love how they start bragging about how impressive it was that the ram did all that braking on it's own. Nevermind the fact that a lot of trailers do not have trailer brakes, or the fact that the Tundra managed to brake the same distance and only got 340 degrees vs. 650 or whatever they said.

The time really doesn't matter. If you can maintain 60 MPH the whole way, your time is dictated by traffic. You should do away with the time category and replace it with a check mark if it can, or cannot, maintain the speed limit.

Because you tried to maintain 60 mph, the times don't matter. If you would have let the trucks go faster when they could, your times would mean something
@moose2934
@moose2934 4 жыл бұрын
Angry Nerd Gaming I understand this is an old comment, but their point in doing this was to simply see IF the trucks could maintain that 60mph speed to be fair. A lot of times, they’ll drive vehicles that can’t. 60 is simply the arbitrary number that they’re towing, and is likely based off of the legal speed they’re allowed to tow. Here in CA, we can only tow at a max speed of 55mph (stupid, I know)... but nonetheless, 60mph is a fair speed for small/mid-size V8s and even V6s.

Can I make a suggestion? Please use a obd2 Bluetooth reader plugged in monitoring live data like: tps , mph, etc stats with a separate camera on an iPhone displaying this along with a live timer during the test. So much info could be learned from each truck tested as well as verify each test was non biased toward any brand. Everyone wins👍🏼

My ram is close to 140k miles, and still yet to have a single problem with it. Never been in a garage, and has sat through brutal winters in Indiana, especially last year reaching -30 degrees some days and nights. never failed me once. I also haul quite a bit with it.

What part of Indiana gets down to -30? When I lived in Indiana I don't remember -30. While Indiana does get colder than I like I never experienced it that cold. I'm curious as to when and where.
@nathanmaynard131
@nathanmaynard131 9 жыл бұрын
Last year was an especially cold winter. I don't know if you live in the Midwest still, but there was what's called a "winter vortex" and basically cold air was being brought from Canada into Indy. It got even colder up towards Lake Michigan, but where I live just a county or two below Indianapolis it reached -30 a few days.

I never comment on these things, people buy what they like and they like with a buy usually but I am so sick of these four guys saying "oh it's only got a V-6 and it kicks everybody's butt " a turbo ads displacement pinheads it puts more air into the cylinders effectively making the motor a larger motor it's forced induction it adds fuel and air. Why does no one ever mention this if you added a turbocharger to any of these V8 trucks they would stomp that eco-boost into the ground. Me myself I own a 2013 ram 1500 and I like it very much but that's my opinion right or wrong I love my truck have a nice day

We had a 2012 dodge 2500 with the 5.7. That truck was incredible, it had the 5 speed trany on it. We were in Virginia and there was a hill on a road that the speed limit was 55. The road was I think a 7 or 8% grade, it was extremely steep. We had a trailer on and the combined weight of the trailer and the load was 15,000 lbs. We started up the hill and it was holding 45 mph at 3,000 rpm. My dad gunned it, the peddle on the floor and it jumped to about 5,000 rpm and within seconds it was at 55 mph. That truck was amazing.

Mr Truck made a good point about the duel rear exhaust that i never thought of. If you haul animals or anything sensitive then the exhaust will pipe it right to it. I like the sound of dual rears but only for racing or mainstreet, not for working with anything sensitive.

Great Job Guys !!! I think your going to have to get a heavier trailer so that you can actually find out which one can get the fastest time. That way when you get on the on ramp you put it to the floor and never let it up. Or use something like a camper which has a lot of drag on it. Nathan mentioned for a lot of this video he had a lot of pedal left. I love this venue for testing !!!!

Punjabi boys...I wanted to comment on ur post below. My tundra also never and I mean NEVER got more than 13mpg no matter how I drove. Rated at 17 city and that was a pipe dream. Agreed the resale and reliability are impeccable...but parts cost are much higher and harder to acquire compared to the others. If you're not brand biased try me all..that's what I did. I'm blown away with my new ram. 5.7 4x4 quad w3.22 rear end. My current avg is 17.5-18 with highway only sometimes reaching 25mpg. So yeah it's night as fast off the line but way way better mileage and still just as capable because the 8 gears. Rams 8 speeds first three ratios are all lower than tundras first two gears so that partially negates the 4.3 rear end. Also somthing to consider ram offers 100000 warranty and toyota is still 60k.

Check out the Tundra test. Trailer brakes were around the same temp, but the trucks brakes were at least twice as cooler. The trailer brakes are not so strong and they don't really need to be, they just assist with the braking to ease of the truck. But still. That was a damn high number on the Ram. Point taken.

Well hopefully it'll work for you, but we all have different experience. My friends 2010 Tundra had transmition for replacement not long ago. I don't know why all shops are telling him that, since only two trans. selenoids show codes. There are people with Rams out there not having issues. I used Ford service truck for 6 years and it stayed solid and good to us the whole time. Rear leave springs got soft on us but thats about it. Now my bosses new Ford was in dealership bunch times too. I really don't know if it's in unpredictable parts reliability, or human errors at assembly.

I own a 2006 RAM 1500 HEMI with Tow Package (Complete). I love this truck. I've read some of the reviews about the truck and the only thing after owning it for a year & half have had happen to me is the tach issue. It works when it wants to. The Tundra is a really nice truck but for me? The RAM does it. The look of that truck is outstanding. And being they are pretty much neck & neck as far as performance IMO it comes down to looks. I guess it's too early to see what bugs/issues they will/will not have.

What no one is commenting about is the basics. Why do I want an outdated, high inertia pushrod engine over a DOHC? When I think dependability and reliability I question the guts of the truck which is the power train. Do this towing test everyday with the same trucks and that will tell me which one is dependable. Can the hemi last 100k miles of this test? I doubt the hemi over the dohc iforce. Bang for your buck and overall options, Ram no doubt. As someone who tows everyday I can't trust the hemi on lasting. Unbiased here,…I have had every brand truck except Nissan.

If you did this every day with your truck, it wouldn't last 50 K miles. This is excessive abuse and is only done to show what the truck is capable of when maxed out. They're running wide open, basically the same as running 100 mph or more if the truck was unloaded and on level ground. How long do you think it would last doing that?

You're right about the law suit. I looked into that. The crash however was because of the fact that the mat used in the car was not designed for the es but was for the rx. It was user error that caused that particular instance. They were still sued and still payed 10Mil to the family despite the fact that the hardware was used incorrectly. It'll take searching for a couple articles to find that.

My mother in law had the same issue and it just turned out to be the mat's in the car which was a simple enough fix. The car was recalled and fixed but beyond that our experience with Toyota has been positive.

I have NEVER seen a 2012, 2013, or 2014 Toyota Tundra on the road dirty, scratched, with anything besides groceries in the bed, hooked up to a trailer, or doing any kind of actual work. I'm sure some of you out there do indeed use them every day for work, but for every one Tundra working, there are ten other brands working, and ten other Tundras compensating for something.

would be great if you guys could do the ike gauntlet towing test with the new ecodiesel ! here in europe, this v6 ecodiesel with it's 250bhp is the most popular engine for towing... and in the Alps we are pushing it to its limits too - and it does make a great job: the pound foot of tourque is much higher in the ecodiesel, so maybe it beats the natural aspirated v8 engines?

Well made the switch from my 2007 tundra 5.7 to 2014 ram...couldn't be happier. I am sure I will regret the resale value but I won't regret the 12 mpg avg in summer I was getting and 10mpg in the winter. Getting 18mpg avg in ram now. Toyota was snappier off the line but was miserable to drive..rough, jerkey, and dollar for dollar was lacking many many features compared to ram. Most folks that buy half tons don't max out the 10,000 everyday...if they do then they buy 3/4 ton diesles..so in my opinion I'll trade the quieter, smoother, easier to load, and substantially better mpg for my 90% daily use.

The Ram brakes are smaller than the Tundra. So since they are both pretty close to the same weight, and pulling the same weight, the Ram brakes are being worked harder. That's why they were hotter.

You'd think for another $9,000, you'd get, you know... brakes that don't suck.

I had duel exhaust on my last truck and yes it was a problem. I had to turn the truck off when hitching and unhitching my camper because the exhaust fumes got right in my face. The last problem was the noise it makes becomes a irritating sound when towing a long distance.

Congrats on the new truck... My 2009 Ram just hit 100k with no problems at all. I also have a 2008 Tacoma with 141k and that truck is also running like new. Either way just keep up on the general maintenance like oil changes, and your truck will be good to you.

As long as your not keeping it long a Dodge is fine. Otherwise pay more and get a gm or get an old truck from the 80s lol

I really like the new Ram 1500 Truck, but the Ram was at full throttle most the way up the steep part of the hill, the Ford Ecoboost still had plenty of peddle left and got significantly better gas mileage. You can think the few tenths of a second are a win for the Ram 1500, but the Ford Ecoboost is the CLEAR winner so far. I am anxious to see how the Ram 1500 Diesel does in your test.

The only reason that the dodge out ran the ford in time is that the older gentleman did a better job at holding the f150 at 60mph. They are all great trucks and each has there pluses and minuses. But even with the fact it has twin turbos the ford is kicking ass with a V6, imagine what it would be like if the 5.0 or the 6.2 had twin turbos on them. They would be monsters. It would be sweet if they tested all of them with their respected power adder options to see how they perform

I will appreciate if Andre could take some brake temperature measurements again, brake temperature is a really important info. By the way, after all these years I came back to watch the videos again, I was seeing carefully the thermometer and it was in Celsius with the Toyota, and with the Ram it was in Fahrenheit, that's why the difference. Greetings

Since these trucks are being able to keep the speed limit with this load I think you should add 1000 lbs and run them again! Then I think we would see the ecoboost and hemi 8speed leave the tundra in the dust. The new Sierra with the 6.2 will be a monster too! Also, you guys didn't really mention the difference in how confident and controlled the trucks feel with the load. I would like to know your thoughts on that.

The Focus and Fusion were both Acceptable. Every manufacturer has a trouble car in the lineup. We're not talking about safety with regards to their entire line here. All I'm have been saying is Toyota has taken strides to correct issues despite the fact that it was user error. If Ford had a bunch of cars crashing due to user error I'd be on their side too saying that people should take responsibility for their actions. Only in the US do some people find something to blame and sue for it.

I have to say, I am only part way through the video and the code seems "better", but in the long run, how will the dodge last? Over the next few years? I know if you keep good maintenance it will last but still. My Tundras will keep going for hundreds of thousands of miles. Will the Dodge?

The brake controller if it's like mine on my 2012 RAM 2500 has a brake type setting besides the gain control. It would seem that the trailer brakes were not working. If I remember right there are 3 types of electric brakes and also the traction control can effect the brake controller. You should be able to test this even on level towing and drag the brakes and notice a difference. I tow a Cimarron 3 horse slant load trailer and when set right you hardly notice that it's back there. If I want I could skid the wheels on my trailer.

Ok, I take it back, on the 2nd trip down was tow haul used? Maybe if you do something like this again with the Ram use the heady electric setting, it sounds like the gain wasn't high enough because the trailers brakes weren't really any hotter. Are you sure they work?
