I played running back for five years in junior high and high school, and I was offered a scholarship as a 5' 5", 141 pound left halfback to play at Troy State in 1960. I didn't take it because of cartilage damage in my left knee which I have to this day.If you want to read a good book on running backs, the best one by far I ever found was ALWAYS ON THE RUN, by Larry Csonka and Jim Kiick. One thing they said was that straight ahead runners don't get hurt and therefore have more longevity, whereas the twisters and turners like Gayle Sayers tend to have short careers because of the pressure their running style puts on their knees.Well, we are all studying this phenom named Derrick Henry, and I find myself, personally, trying to fit him into some sort of category. He's nearest Eric Dickerson as a stand-up runner, but it looks like he's matured this year (2015) into having more of a lean as he tries to run up the middle in his effort to reach the secondary, where he can begin taking those long strides.Which leads me to wonder if we have seen anyone with long strides like he has running the football like he does. We had Julio Jones here at Foley, in south Alabama, and I noticed long ago that the guy covered more ground in one stride than a lot of high school players did in two or three strides. But Julio was not a running back. I can't remember ever seeing a running back this good who was this long and tall.Someone on here has noted that Derrick reminds him of Marcus Dupree. Me too. But you know what reminds me of Marcus most about Derrick? His stiff-arm. Marcus would be sixty yards downfield running for Oklahoma and someone would try to tackle him on about the ten yard line and Marcus would flick his arm out there and the guy would be separated from Marcus. But Derrick will stiff-arm a guy for ten or fifteen yards sometimes -- am I wrong? I can't remember anyone else stiff-arming like either Marcus or Derrick. We also had Trent Richardson in this area (Pensacola, and he came over here to play Alma Bryant HS south of Mobile). High school guys would 'olay' musclebound Trent when he got within ten yards of the goal line on a fairly long run. On the above tape -- someone here has noticed this -- these little guys -- they LOOK little up against Derrick -- they don't just 'olay' Derrick -- they don't even seem to want to raise their arms. It is as though they are saying, 'Heck, he's going to get his yardage, so why should I even try to tackle this monster? People will understand.'There were quite a few national pundits, when Derrick signed with Alabama, who just couldn't seem to see how this guy could actually play running back in college. One may have been Mark Schlabach, if I remember correctly. These writers thought that Saban would turn Derrick henry into a linebacker at Alabama. I told some of them, No, Saban stood true to his word when D. J. Fluker, who wanted to play OL, in spite of the fact that his 5-star rating in high school when he was here at Foley HS, was based mainly upon his showing as a Noseguard when he was a junior. Fluker was probably the main reason that Alabama had such a devastating OL when they beat Notre Dame in the national championship game and when they beat Georgia the game before that for the SEC championship. The truth is, if you will allow me to say so, is that the word "Freak," though it is probably disrespectful, characterizes Derrick Henry as well as it did either Julio or Fluker. When have we seen guys like these in high school of college? Julio is and always has been a physical phenom. So is Derrick Henry. People are still trying to believe their eyes about this guy. They can't believe he is as fast as he is. And now that he has learned better how to get out of the backfield, through the linebackers, into the secondary, they are trying to fit him into some category or reference point. there isn't any. He's different from any running back they've ever seen. He looks slower than he is because of his long strides. One other thing. Derrick is serious about it all. He doesn't talk about himself to reporters when interviewed. It's about the team with Derrick. Oh, one other, other thing -- if a guy is a foot taller than you, and is as strong as a bull anyhow, do you want to tackle him? Marcus Dupree wasn't that tall -- he looked more like a regular human being. Tackling Derrick Henry, particularly to high school boys, must have been like trying to tackle a telephone pole. "It ain't natural."

I had the pleasure of watching this young man in person over the past three years. Believe me he is physical. Unfortunately they showed most of his touchdown breakaways, he is a workhorse also. Definitely has no fear going up the middle and dragging players along for the ride. Can't wait to see how Saban uses him at Bama. I'm a Gator, but wish this kid all the best.

Imagine youre a Varsity guy, you just barely passed a Trig test earlier that day, failed your history test, and you remembered youre facing Yulee tonight The number 2 is forever etched into your mind, you might have tripped him once, but that is your highlight He is the Weapon X of Offense, Derrick Lamar Henry Jr. and he's here to scorch the Earth of your defense and make it back home in time to study for his next test, not on the field obviously, that doesnt test him

He's a long strider, his game speed is legit once he gets past the front 7. There are SEC DEs this kid's size, but not many DBs who would want to tackle this dude one on one in the open field. Playing behind that pro Alabama Oline, if Henry gets through the hole clean he's gone for at least 20 yards. Anyone who puts up the numbers this kid put up in HS will have no problem rushing for 1500+ yards/season in any conference.

... He had over 4000 yards this season. If he put more than 3 or 4 schools on this highlight tape the video would be half an hour. The video was constructed to show his ability. It does just that. Where do you see him being overrated? He's constantly underrated and looked over. Look for him in 2-3 years; this man will be a Heisman contender.

Yeah I have a feeling he will get small playing time his first two years...I wish he went to Georgia, the Dawgs could use a young short yardage/ third down running back, plus, not disrespecting Alabama, but Georgia seems better at adapting their offense to fit personal instead of bringing in personal to match the play style like 'Bama does. If he does get solid playing time I'm anxious to see him even though I'm a Georgia fan.

He set the Crimson Tide freshman rushing record with 1,108 in 2012 even though he didn't start also derrick Henry didn't even want to start as a freshman in college, he didn't have his confidence up high enough but as his confidence grow his time played also grows.

1 of my friends and i had a discussion on Derrick and if he could be considered the greatest High School running back or all-time. Derricks stats were so great back then, i dont think that we could play Madden or NCAA and get numbers like this. Well not cheating anyway. My friend said that he the goat for high school hands down. I looked at my friend after he said this and said there was this 1 cat that could give him a run for his money on being the goat. This persons name is Marcus Dupree. Now Dupree didnt have or come close to having over 12,000 yards for his high school career, it more 7,250. His rushing avg was a little over 8 yards per carry. Dupree had 80 to 85 rushing TDs and i know that he broke a record that some cat named Herschel Walker had set. Total rushing touchdowns. Now i think Herschel had 82 or 83, but whatever it was, Dupree broke it by 1. The reason i onow a good little bit about Marcus Dupree, i had to play against this monster. This man was born in Philadelphia Mississippi. It just felt like every single time that he touched the ball, he was going to the house with it. I think he 1 kick return for a TD against us. Look im not taking anything away from Derrick at all. This dude won a FREAKING Heisman Trophy plus countless more awards. I am actually really happy for him amd the career that he has had in High School and College. And yesterday became one of 8 players to ever rush for more than 2,000 yards in a season. Oh and i almost forgot 1 thing, the man just won his 2nd straight rushing title. Anyway i sure hope everyone has a good year. ✌

Great player that will end up a linebacker, he's 100 pounds heavier than most of the kids he's playing against and he runs straight up and is easy to tackle when it's someone his size

Anyone who don't think this boy is gonna be good, you need to quit watching football I think he can play wherever even tho you can say he's not fast enough on paper to be an RB, the tape show's it all. for a guy who's 6-4 250 runnin' the rock he's got great vision and he's got long distance running ability and game speed. Screw the 40 tho he's not that bad in it. He's got game PBP.
