( www.TFLcar.com ) The 2014 Acura RLX is Acura's flagship vehicle until the new NSX hits the showroom. It is stuffed full of the latest and newest technology including PAWS which in Honda speak stands for Precision All-Wheel-Steering. Get it? The brand new 2014 Acura RLX is powered by a 3.5L 310 HP V6 engine that powers the front wheels and loves to rev. In another fun and informative TFLcar drive and review we test and review the new top dog Acura from 0-60 MPH to see how fast and how well it drives with the new all wheel steering.

I like Acura/Honda attitudes towards making car, very interesting. They're like "Yeah we don't need V8, we could still make it faster in V6 'cause we're HONDA", "We don't need RWD, we could do same thing in FWD 'cause we're HONDA" I like that

I love my RLX. The best part is that I still have not seen another one the road. I skipped about 52 CDN $ in depreciation yet drives like new. Best purchase of the year for sure. Well best purchase of last year. I manage 40+ MPG on highway drives on a regular basis, it's not even the hybrid version! Get this instead of any used midsized sedan, unless you do mostly city driving or commute in heavy traffic.

RLXs and RLs are built in Japan. That means much higher quality and standards. TLs are built in America. That means much lower quality and standards. I have had both vehicles. A difference is drastic. RL is built as a tank. All parts in it fit well. All TLs have annoying squeak in the cabin. Get to talk to real TL owner and get truth out of them. American quality control is very low.
@shred5
@shred5 9 жыл бұрын
Well the TL is a cheaper car too. I may disagree on your reasoning, but I have no doubt the RL or RLX's quality is much better than the TL or TLX.
@sunshadow9704

shred5 Have you seen any car built in America that even remotely can match German or Japanese quality? I might speak for my experience. I have not seen single car. All cars built on American soil has with very law quality: I explain: Bring window down on any American built car and close the door. Listen carefully to the sound it makes. Repeat with German or Japanese cars. (no all of these will be much better, but most will win hands down) Now look inside of the cabin: How plastic parts fit together. I see all these defect right away. Now drive the car with all windows up and no audio of any kind. Most American built cars have various unpleasant noises coming from either poor craftsmanship or law quality of material or both. Now see the gap between metal part on exterior. On American cars these are ~ 20-40% wider than on German cars. I hope you know why. Numbers dont lie. Honda/Toyota/MB/Audi/BMW/Acura (built in Japan) way more popular in large cities. (NY, W DC, LA, San Fran, Boston)

O.S S.O. I've driven everything and I've found many loud ass Japanese and European cars too. You're completely blind if you think they're exempt from being noisy. FYI I've had a Cadillac that was quieter than any Mercedes, BMW or Audi I've ever driven, windows and all. Of course the newer ones seem to all have leaky sunroofs and blow wheel bearings and struts between oil changes too, but my point still stands and is 100% true. Plus, the largest problem with American cars is the cheap ass manufacturers, not where it was made.
@KanjoosMakhichoos
@KanjoosMakhichoos 9 жыл бұрын
O.S S.O. That is not necessarily true. Japanese people take their jobs more seriously and don't slack off, so they are less likely to make a mistake, but it stops there. Just because a car is made in Japan does not mean that it is superior to a car built in USA. It just means that it is less likely to have defects. Here is an example: I have a '95 Toyota Camry (built in Kentucky) that has ZERO squeaks or rattles. It is the complete opposite of my friend's Made-in-Japan '05 G35. In fact, G35's are known for getting all rattle-y after just a couple of years. This has nothing to do with the nationality of the person assembling the car. The G35 has a shitty design and that is why it falls apart after a couple of years. It ultimately depends on the quality of materials the manufacturer chooses to use, and the processes they have set, not on who is the monkey assembling the parts together. The RLX probably has less rattles only because it is a more expensive car, not because it is made in Japan.

I agree with you. I hate when they say just buy a TL. I owned a TL that I traded and got an RLX. If you just get a TL (and that's not a bad option) over this, then your missing out on alot. This car does more and is more refined than a TL. As for the sqeeks, rattles and the lining on the roof peeling off on the TL, I can second that as well. TL still a nice car, RLX is awesome tho.

RLX is one of the most under rated car out there. If i am buying a luxury, i am looking forward for luxury with tech gadgets and it provides it all. Back curtain can be automatic but no reason to put extra motor,cost and Acura has got that straight. When i am sitting at the driver seat, it gives the feeling which is very hard to explain. Lexus is good but it just fades away over time and i am talking about months here. On the another hand, driving an Acura is just ever-green feeling.

Also stop misleading people with the price of RLX. No one pays MSRP. Acura RLX Top model (Advance package that includes all possible features on this car) will cost you 53.8K. This is not even close to 61K you mentioned. Now say you will take one package lower called Technology and you will pay just 48.3K (90% will be fully satisfied with this package). Say you are willing to take RLX with Navigation package then cost of RLX is 45.2K Now name any other vehicle in range of mid 40K that has such level of luxury, features and reliability. Since there is none you soon realize how good and practical Acura RLX is.

They need to make it a DOHC, tune it a bit more, put a more free flowing exhaust, and then pair it with the hybrid system. With that setup they could get over 400 hp, making it one of the most powerful naturally aspirated v6 s on the market with 330+ hp without hybrid assistance. Adding a turbocharger to the equation, or even two, would make way for a 500+ hp V6 beast. And that my friends, would be an engine.

Are these cars comfortable for taller people? I can pretty much count on one hand the number of sedans made since 2008 that I fit in comfortably and don't have to duck or have seats that are way too narrow or whatever. Assuming I fit and the cars fairly comfortable, one of these will probably be my next car. Reliable and parts are cheap, and should be roomy.

I'm glad Roman actually gets this car. Acura didn't build this FWD car to be a sports sedan. Acura built this car to be a comfortable cruise with good dynamics. Just like Lexus builds the ES to be a comfortable car with good dynamic and the GS to be the sportier car. The sportier RLX will be the SH-AWD version this fall, which will be, to correct the FLC guys, the true flagship model until the NSX is released. And let's face it. Honda/Acura have always been conservative with their styling
@anoopmathew82

Nathan, I'm not a huge fan of the RLX or anything but your logic on why wouldn't you just buy a TL is ridiculous. RLX obviously appeals to a different customer than a TL, one who prefers a larger more comfortable car than a sporty car. By that same logic anyone interested in a 5 series BMW should just buy a 3 series, and anyone wanting an A6 just get the A4. If you're only testing for handling and fun to drive factor that's understandable but when you're testing it to compare it with it's own segment the argument is flawed.
@GeorgeKnighton
@GeorgeKnighton 10 жыл бұрын
I own an RLX Advance. There are times that you realize that you're driving a Japanese car that was designed by the Japanese design team, and that it is completely built in Japan. By contrast, the TL and the upcoming TLX are all American cars, designed by Americans and built in America for Americans. I think it's very likely the TLX will be much more popular than the RLX, and I fear the 5G Legend/RLX will never be a big seller in America because most Americans are going to prefer the TLX. I believe that there is content in the RLX that will never be seen in the TLX (like maybe Krell Audio). But when you're comparing a 50K 9 speed TLX Advance against a 61K 6 speed RLX Advance...I'm afraid that too many people will say what Nathan said.

@@innotafanofanyofjlbjlbissd6777 I might just do that, but I have to confess, finding parts is not easy; especially in you want to do tuning or upgrades. I settled on OEM suspension because money (also crippling back pain). And many things that were planned are either postponed ( spent 4k on parts so far this year) or just not available for my specific model ( think sway bars upgrade, or lighter parts. Right now, I still need to put 2k in the next few months just to be up to date with maintenance. It's never ending. At least highway mileage is excellent if you pace yourself and the P-AWS system makes the car easy to park and maneuver.

Even from a distance, it's pretty easy to see that this is a Honda product. Get closer and that becomes even more apparent, especially the side view which is very Accord-like. The C-pillar 'kink' has been an Accord feature for years and it looks pretty much unchanged from that car. I agree about the bug-eye headlights and Cruze tail lights. Methinks for that much moolah a bit less blandness might be in order. Maybe a little less 'Honda-ness' too.

Hardly. They're going after a different market than practically every other luxury brand out there and they're succeeding in at least one area. Their SUVs are fantastic. They may not be as sporty as a BMW or as refined as a Mercedes Benz or Lexus, but they're affordable, reliable upmarket vehicles and that appeals to people around the area I live, Washington D.C.. Their sedan lineup definitely needs some work, but I wouldn't say they're on the verge of irrelevance.

There won't be a turbo version, but there will be a hybrid version with a total of somewhere around 380hp combined. The even more interesting thing will be when they put that 380hp setup into the TL (TLX?). I'm just hoping they improve the styling of the next TL, but at this point I'm expecting it to be boring. Maybe the performance will make up for it. Maybe. Probably not though.

I almost feel mocked by Honda that they still refuse to develop a FR chassis. In their eyes, Acura is just another Japanese 'me-too' luxury brand in America vs. Lexus who actually puts effort into their models with unique platforms not shared by Toyota. Also in the $50k range, I expected a V8 (or V6 hybrid/turbo) option. Acura is still very much a 2nd rate luxury brand until I see that FR platform. Even Cadillac deserves more praise than Acura.

the 3 point turns quietly contradict what he said about not knowing what the all wheel steering does. It's most important feature is shortening the turning radius, particularly with long wheelbase vehicles. I'd say the effortless way you turned it around on a 2 lane road while barely going unto the dirt shoulder is proof of the system's utility.

It would make way for the next generation of Honda sports cars. The new NSX would rival corvettes, mustangs, camaros, vipers, and more. I'd still buy a mustang, but the fact that a V6 will produce 380 horsepower next year, means v8 producers will have to step up their game. A 5 liter v8 making 420 hp in a mustang wouldn't be that impressive when a 3.7 liter v6 in a honda is making 380.

I'm a little confused guys. I believe this car can DRIVE ITSELF from a complete stop to steering and at a safe distance from cars around it when optionally equipped. And Nathan gives it a Rent it? I'm not over excited by the style either but this car has a lot of technology. Or am I wrong?

acura could definitely compete with audi if they make their cars more powerful

This particular Acura doesn't compete with anybody, really. Maybe the Cadillac XTS. Maybe the Volvo S80. People leaning toward Mercedes or Audi aren't even looking at this car. The RLX is just a place for Honda people to go when they grow up...or grow old.... Speaking personally. :-)

George Knighton I agree, that my story. I have a TL not only cause I like it, but because Im at a place where I graduated from the accord. lol.

I like the looks of the 300 and the SRT8. But they don't have the build quality. I would consider the SHO

The RLX is not "the most expensive product Honda makes" as stated in the introduction. Honda's HA-420 costs 4.5 million dollars. I'd say that Honda product costs a bit more than the RLX. ;-)

It looks like an accord mixed with a 7 series. Also the interior reminds me of the Accord. My family has owned many Hondas and we've always thought about getting Acuras but when we drive them they feel too honda-ish.

both of those specced up to this would cost at least twice the price of this one. but badge snobs will go that route without thinking along those lines.

I believe the fully loaded acura mdx is more expensive, at least in Canada
