Acura RLX Sport Hybrid: A Surprise Sleeper

There aren't many sleepers produced right from the factory anymore. Everyone knows when you're packing a solid amount of horsepower these days. We managed to find one though, and it's arrived in the form of the Acura RLX Sport Hybrid.
It looks like a mild-mannered premium sedan on the outside. Under the skin, however, it's packing a combined power output of 377 horsepower. Additionally, it's making use of three electric motors to help send torque to exactly where it's needed. It's the first production use of an all-electric Super Handling All-Wheel-Drive-System, otherwise known as SH-AWD.
That's damn near supercar tech... in a car that's going under the radar for all the wrong reasons. Say hello to a true sleeper.

This RLX SH owner (we do exist!) agrees with the review. It is silent but incredibly fast, and handles well in the turns for such a heavy car. An owner has documented a 4.8 second 0-60 in this car. Unfortunately, there's no marketing for this car, and Acura has produced so few, that people simply aren't looking at it. In short, it is not only a sleeper, but also a unicorn.

I've had a Legend and now I own a 2008 RL. they are very good vehicles. I was settled with the 2nd gen until the 2017. For me, one of the things I like is that I'm driving a "luxury" car. And if it is luxury, you shouldn't be seeing one at every intersection such as other "luxury" vehicles. I'm just saying

Thank you Jeff for this review. It is very enlightening and useful to have journalists like yourself highlight each vehicle for its intended purpose, characteristics, and over all qualities that others in your profession might glance over simply to make a review that does nothing to educate, but rather to illustrate their own personalities and preferences to their audience. As an owner of an E Class (work vehicle), TL SH-AWD (personal), and a Z4 (pleasure), it's refreshing and simply downright pleasurable to see such a well informed, thoughtful, non-biased and eloquent piece of work. You have done good work Sir ^_^

Thank you for this review! I'm currently in the market for a daily. I've been searching for 07-08 Acura TL Type S 6spd/ Acura TL SH-AWD 6spd. Having a hard time finding one. Now I'll add the RLX to my list. I'm loving the reliability of the Acura brand as I currently own a 1993 Acura Legend. I think a lot of people get too critical of comparing this to that. Find out what you, the individual loves about the vehicle!

After driving the RLX PAWS model I was not overly impressed. It felt like a step backwards from my 2006 RL. When I got to drive the Sport Hybrid next to the PAWS I found how distinctly different these two cars are. Most reviews out there are on the early 2014 PAWS models, and yes there were issues. But those early reviews have overshadowed this unique and low volume addition. My 2016 RLX Sport Hybrid Advance will have fewer models on the road than the NSX. Your review is refreshing, relaxed and obviously not simply a read of an Acura press release...Thank You. Would you consider a side by side review of the PAWS vs SH models?

How is the krell audio system.
@mikew9879
@mikew9879 7 жыл бұрын
I think it is fantastic. But everyone's audio tastes vary. The Krell system has amazingly clear mids and highs. It does not have a 'thumper' bass lows if that is your taste. As a baseline, I was very happy with the Bose system in my former RL - especially the DVD-A quality. The Krell system exceeds that (without DVD-A) and can produce high volume without distortion. It even makes streaming Pandora (high def) sound great. It does however, call out signal quality with Sirius / XM where, I find, many channels sound muddy. I believe the subwoofer is tuned for the expected owner of this type of car. Those who prefer mobile boom boxes will not find it adequate. YMMV.
@readynow12345
@readynow12345 7 жыл бұрын
I have an 05 RL the Bose system is one of the best I've heard, so you think that the Krell system is slightly better ? I'm curious what did you pay for you car I have seen some really good prices what I find odd is there seems to be a ton of the 2014 RLX for sale, did you trade in your 05 & how many miles did you have on it before you sold it.
@mikew9879
@mikew9879 7 жыл бұрын
Yes, I find the Krell system better than the RL's Bose. I would not post my personal purchase details on an open forum. But I recommend you check out Acurazine.com 3rd Gen RL / RLX forum. It is THE most extensive source of RLX & Sport Hybrid details from owners. Of particular interest to you is that many of the RLX owners were RL owners, so we share similar appreciation for these underappreciated cars. There are several discussions on current market prices - and they are quite extraordinary for a car with this level of engineering (restrained styling aside).

The City Part of Town. So this is the follow-up of the RL, which was overpriced and got outsold by the Mitsubishi i-MiEV. But I had no idea there was a manual SH-AWD version. This RLX hybrid looks pretty good. I wouldn't go for it. But an older driver who doesn't like the German brands might love this. Acura ELS audio is outstanding. I think it's better than JBL factory setups, and in many ways, it's better than Bermester. The Krell name doesn't impress me, and I hear the company dumped it's founding family it's first 29 years, but the reviews for the Krell system in the Acura are all highly positive. Thanks for this video, Jeff. Now I'm actually looking forward to seeing the new MDX at the NY Show next week.

One of the reasons this car doesn't sell well is because the dealers rarely stock the SH-AWD models around. They stock the FWD only, non-hybrid, drive systems and even then it's slim pickings. In 2014 acura only sold 3400 RLX' total and 2195 in 2015. The SH-AWD is a small portion of that, less than 5% of sales (133 and 250 respectively for the years). Put this into perspective: the new NSX will sell 800 models per year - far more than the SH-AWD RLX.. Quite ridiculous really. Rule #1 if you want to sell a mass market care, make sure you have them on the lots in all the colors that people want them to be. But instead, Acura insists on stocking their SUVs and 'sporty' ILX which coincidentally gets blown off the road by the new Civic turbos. Acura not really sure what their identity is these days.

I really like this car. The interior quality is better than an E Class but not quite as good as a Lexus. I would go for the non hybrid since the batteries in the trunk take up too much space and really looks like a lazy solution like the Camry Hybrid.

I purchased a CPO 18 RLX hybrid in Dec 2019 and it hasn't drop in value in 2 years. The big disadvantage is replacement part unique to the RLX like windshield, Krell audio, EV components, rims, or jewel eyed headlamps that are close to impossible to find.

Actually the Audi s6 has been tested to 0-60 in 3.9s in many cases. If you're comparing this to an s6/s7 it's not anywhere near the performance of those cars also the Quattro system has a sport differential which kind of does the same thing as the Acura and is tuned much differently compared to the a6/a7 for a sporty feel. But I do agree the s6 isn't really a sleeper.

The problem with Acura is its pleather leather interior, terrible exterior styling, and its terrible exterior bland styling. Also at $60k way more luxurious looking options. Im not gonna be dumb and say id get a vettte over this (i would but that is not a comparison for this type of shopper). A Lexus GF has a better interior, exterior, and resale value. I really think the problem with Acura is they took away the manuals so enthusist/sporty drivers have no interest. The exterior styling with the beak ect is horrid and not luxurious looking but Sonata looking so buyers looking to make a "hey im rich and lease my bmw with badge nomeclature that doesnt correspond with the engine" image with the car are not interested in acura. That leaves soccor moms whose husbands convince them Acura is luxury and they divorce a year later because everyone says nice Honda.

+The Hooniverse Thats true. But that doesn't change the fact that this car is way out of its league and its insanely overpriced. The example of the Infiniti was the kind of performance that could be had for a lot less. $70,000 for an Acura? You can get a well equipped Audi A8 for $85k. Or a 2016 BMW 740i. For this much money this thing better hit 60 in 5 seconds.

+888TopGear888 You're missing the point of the video... It's a nice car that's surprisingly fast and a genuine sleeper. Kody Craven Well.... I happen to have a very sensitive ass. Because when I sit in 435 that does 0-60 in 4.6 seconds, from a car that does it in 5.1, I can easily tell the difference. And this whole video was about the Honda being a sleeper, so I'm guessing that 0-60 times are sort of relevant. A sleeper is a car that is surprisingly fast. Given the segment this RLX "sport" competes in, a 0-60 time of 5 seconds isn't a plus. Its expected. Pretty much all full-sized sedans do it between 4.8 to 5.6 seconds. And its not exactly a bargain. Any 5-Series competitor, optioned out to 70k is a better choice. And lets not forget that the RLX is based on the Accord and is FWD. (~50 hp to the rear wheels isn't exactly AWD. The SH AWD that made Acura famous isn't in this car.) $70,000 for a 550 MSport or an Acura?
