It looks like a Honda Element at the front, a London taxi in the middle and a Suzuki Carry at the rear. I dig it, it’s so deeply utilitarian and doesn’t try to hide its function at all. In Australia, there was a company called Flashcab and they modified Ford Falcon station wagons during the 90s and 2000s with a rear facing ramp and raised roof where the rear luggage area was for wheelchair access. Most of them were bought by taxi companies, but a few found private buyers. They were once a common sight, but are now very rare and again, a vehicle borne out of necessity
@bwofficial1776
@bwofficial1776 10 ай бұрын
In the US it's common to modify minivans to take wheelchairs. You can pick them out because they'll have a lift kit and a body kit to hide the ramp components under the car. Sometimes the ramp will be under one of the side doors, sometimes it'll be under the tailgate which you can tell because there will be a cutout bumper and a big box where the bumper should be. Larger vehicles will be based on a commercial van and will usually have a distinctive raised square roof with extended doors.
@bafg182
@bafg182 10 ай бұрын
@@bwofficial1776minivans have never really been that popular in Australia, except for the Toyota Previa and the Kia Carnival. There is a company that modifies Carnivals with lifted rear suspension and a rear-facing ramp and that’s probably the most popular option for private buyers needing a car that can take a wheelchair. There are also a few JDM import options, like the Toyota Porte. Taxi operators have moved away from the Falcon-based flashcabs and to Toyota HiAce vans with a rear-mounted lift. The main difference seems to be rear-facing ramps and lifts are the default in Australia for some reason.

So this vehicle has a lot of Ford parts but it was built in the AM General plant in Mishawaka, Indiana where the Hummers were previously built. So essentially it was a Ford built in a General Motors plant.
@kc9scott
@kc9scott 10 ай бұрын
AM General was never owned or controlled by GM. The only connection is that GM bought the rights to the (civilian) Hummer name, and had the vehicles continue to be made in AM General’s plant.
@NoName-ik2du
@NoName-ik2du 6 ай бұрын
@@kc9scott The H2 and H3 were both GM products (based on GM platforms for other GM trucks from the period). I don't remember where the H3 was built, but you are correct that the H2 plant was not owned by GM (even though the H2 was a purely GM vehicle). The original H1 was an AM General product because it was just a civilian version of the Humvee. Humvees and H1s were built in the same plant (since they were essentially the same vehicle). These two plants sit side-by-side. The MV-1 was made in the H2 plant. Mercedes-Benz wagons were also briefly assembled in the H2 plant after the MV-1 was discontinued. The H2 plant was sold a few years ago to an electric car company. The H1 plant is still owned by AM General and continues to produce Humvees to this day.
@Darko42000
@Darko42000 3 ай бұрын
AM general is what's left of AMC and military part of Jeep division in AMC when Chrysler bought Jeep and AMC. But the hummer had given GM ownership and a contract permission to assemble the civilian Hummer H1 but the H2 and H3 and GMC EV Hummer are all original designs by GM but it's weird they chose ford for the parts but little GM parts.
@NoName-ik2du
@NoName-ik2du 3 ай бұрын
@@Darko42000 The MV-1 was an AM General product. It was built in the same plant as the H2, but the MV-1 had nothing to do with GM. It probably just happened to be cheaper to source parts from Ford than GM, so that's why the MV-1 had Ford parts. Mildly Fun Fact: Military Humvees have a keyed ignition option that is very rarely installed, but when it is, the keys are Ford keys.

I used to work at the Humvee plant (next door to the MV-1 plant and part of the same company). These vans were a complete flop commercially. When production stopped, we scrapped millions of dollars in brand new parts because the demand was so hopelessly overestimated. It was insane to see how much material was thrown away. At the time I left the company, we still had hundreds of brand new completed MV-1s on premises, rusting away because no one wanted them. I know there were even more in storage off site as well, but I don't recall ever being told an exact number.

Lotus doesn't just use Toyota parts though. In fact, I think the only Toyota part of modern Lotus models is the engine, and even that has been heavily modified. Most of modern Lotus switchgear comes from Volvo and Geely, since Geely owns both companies. The Emira also uses (as an option) the 2.0 turbo engine from the Mercedes CLA35/45 AMG.

I drive these for work too, we also have the dodge grand caravans. The mv1 is the worst, the A.C. Completely sucks on hot days. And it does have a harsh ride. the mv1s also have a notch near the top of the ramp and it makes it hard to push riders up that lip. They tend to get stuck. For a specifically engineered accesible vehicle this inconvenience is not ok.

I have to wonder if your AC is working properly (including the blend doors which are known to fail) as our van has always had too much cooling :) Even without using the optional rear AC unit (which ours has) it has always quickly gotten ice cold. Having said that, one of the blend doors in ours has just failed and needs replaced...so the cold air in the front only comes out of the defrost vents!

the plus or add ons from the factory is the rear ac unit in the trunk area -driver side and the interior ramp switch on the b pillar... yeah, you need to swing open the door first, then can activate the switch from the inside to deploy it. Those are aftermarket rims it seems, with a Full Size spare tire (all these vans came with a tire pump and that crappy tire sealant instead) i got a full size steel rim as well but luckily didnt need it yet

yeah, caravans have a unibody so lots of frame supports underneath to mimic a box frame design and that's why it's kinda expensive to do those wheelchair conversions.
