The heroic or shamanic initiation is the prototypical, albeit extreme, version of human personality development. All learning comes at the cost of the sacrifice of previous structures of knowledge. Such a sacrifice is disorienting, anxiety provoking, angering, curiosity-inspiring and dangerous, in proportion to its magnitude. With luck, however, it is followed by an increase in pragmatic competence.

His lecturing style is very dynamic, fluid, and kind of jumpy. You have to be high in openness to follow him. So he’s likely not good for those who only think in an ordered and logical way.

Another superb lecture! Kali actually represents the devouring of ignorance and the ego. She's the 'radiant dark' in tantra. She protects her followers and saves them from themselves, essentially. The Tantrik traditions have some truly fascinating Gods and Goddesses.

Amazing lecture so far. I can totally relate to the representation of the father as the culture and the mother as the nature, both holding, pushing and selecting the individual, who mediates between those two. Having a hard time going through a tyrannical father posession myself, because of extreme dependency on school and teachers, so this lecture helps me ground the hero-story of the way to get out of that complex. Thank you Jordan Peterson. Can‘t express all the gratitude I feel for this man.

I remember Alan Watts mentioning Kali as something that "absolutely must not happen" in a lecture. In very similar terms to how Peterson describes it here, and I was fascinated by its symbolic representation. This is why I find Peterson and Jung so interesting.

When I was a kid I used to drawn houses whith chamines and smoke because the smoke shows that there are lives inside it. I didn't draw smoke when the people were drawn outside the house.

For those who care, that last “Julian’s drawing” the tree representing the tree of life that ascends in heaven aka the sky, also can be drawn in a way where the tree descends down to the bottom, it’s roots. So there is a continuous flow from heaven/sky coming down to earth with treasures. But also, going down into the depth of darkness and coming back up with treasures also. Treasures are actually buried deep within. So if you are going through very tough times, especially psychologically or even spiritually, you can come back up to earth with new ways of being and thinking. That drawing is similar to the tarot card “the moon” which has a lobster coming out from the sea (depth/darkness) on the road heading towards the light (moon/sun) with a dog on one side and a wolf on the other side. The dog represents the tamed animal (order) and the wolf represents the wild animal (chaos) both howling at the moon. These archetypes and symbols are beyond amazing. It gives you a sensation that life is alive when you study them.

I loved this lecture, Dr. Peterson is an amazing teacher. I would just like to point out that his analyses of kali at 50:33 wasn't accurate. Kali does represents the destructive mother nature, but she has her tongue out because on her way to destroy everything in her path she steps on Shiva ( often represented as the god of destruction ) the hands on her waist do represent life and fertility but not the birth of shiva.

Shiva also holds the key to creation, and he works like a gardener who removes the weeds from the garden so that the trees of fruits can flourish. So Kali upon stepping foot on shiva realises that she's not only destroying living beings but she will also eliminate the possibility of new life( which is why her tongue is out ). And so she stops.

If it means anything I seen the pink ball exploring the unknown, the gray triangle leading it astray, and the blue triangle interfering, reconciling on behalf of the pink balls’ transgressions and guiding it back to structure, like a parent would raise a child after misbehaving at school or somewhere the parent isn’t. Or even like maybe you have an older friend who always gets into trouble and you’re always following behind them and maybe your older sibling stops it from going too far and takes yo ass back home.

Actually stranger danger really is a thing, it just depends on where you live. My country is a trafficking hot-spot and I definitely teach my son to stay the F away from strangers. I personally know people whose children were almost taken in a pharmacy of all places. It must be fantastic to not have to worry about that.
