Volvo's popular XC60 has always lived in the shadow of its German competition, but Volvo hopes to change that with their latest back-to-back refresh for 2015 and 2015.5. 2015 brought brand new engines including a turbo and supercharged 2.0L four-cylinder, new 8-speed automatics and a refreshed front end while 2015.5 brings a major redesign to the Sensus infotainment system. With three available engines producing 300 horsepower or higher, the XC60 also manages to be one of the most powerful compact crossovers available. In R-Design trim the XC60 eeks out a 0-60 time faster than the X3 placing it fourth in the segment behind the Macan Turbo, SQ5 and Macan. TheT6 form we look at in this episode slips just behind the R-Design and BMW X3 3.0 in performance while delivering serious value.
Unlike other manufacturers Volvo handles refreshed somewhat differently. Since it launched in 2009 the XC60 has received slight tweaks almost yearly and when taken as a whole they amount to a refresh 5 years later. With new engines, new transmissions, new bumpers, headlamps, hoods, wheels, seats, dashboard, infotainment systems and gauges since the vehicle launched, the XC60 manages to stay fresh in this competitive segment despite being one of the older vehicles. If you last looked at the XC60 when it launched, you'd do well to give it another look this year.

Our go to car for long drives is my 2014 XC60. For 40 years I drove every Toyota limited (Camry, Avalon, 2017 Hylabder limited, wife's 2015 Lexus es 350) and I thought I have a bad back. One day in 2015 as I was having my Toyota out for service, I walked over to Volvo dealership and test drove their XC60 and felt in love. Seat are amazing. Now I can easily drive 8 hours non stop. I can not do that in Lexus ES350. After 3 hours, I need to pull over and rest.

Great detailed review. 20 Years ago I herniated a disc and I tried all cars to find one that did not hurt my back. The exercise cost me a lots of money. The worst seat for me was my wife Forester after a 5 hour ride, I was in bed for a week. I now drive a Volvo and I can drive all day with no problem. Best seats period.

Alex, you're without a doubt one of the best car reviewers. Thorough and objective, I always look at your reviews. I like the fact that you show the different feature design options, (photo inserts) because they are informative. I think Uo should give s little more attention to safety tho. The new frontal offset crash safety standards have revealed some pretty shocking safety flaw designs that should be highlighted.

Volvo should put in LED high beam in combination with the HID projektories instead of Halogen. That would make the road brighter when driving this car with high beam.

Another great review by Alex. Just bought my wife a 2015.5 XC60 T5 (5 cyl) AWD Platinum, Climate and Blis Package, Flamenco Red. What a nice car! Just a couple of points. The manual control for the lumbar support is gone--the lumbar support now has an electric switch by the regular seat controls. And her XC60 has CTC (Corner Traction Control), which is Volvo's torque vectoring system. With CTC and 20inch Perillis, the car really feels "tied down" on the hard corners. Give me the firm ride, in-control feeling, and great cornering of the European models over the cushy American car ride any day. I decided to pull the trigger and buy this XC60 because Volvo got rid of the tepid 3.2 6cyl in favor of the T5, from the excellent Volvo 5 cyl engine line. Famous for it's reliability and longevity, this Volvo engine has a lot of low end torque (266 lbs ft at 1800 rpm), but I didn't know it had a temporary boost to 295 lbs ft.-- I kept thinking it had incredible smash when passing, and on short highway acceleration lanes, and the temp boost explains it.

777Outrigger It's surprisingly head turning. Also another surprise is that even my front wheel drive version does pretty well in snow. I saw a lot of sedans getting stuck, spun out on the road etc. Not my car (My city is very hilly). Your awd must be amazing in snow. Enjoy your car, brother!
@777Outrigger
@777Outrigger 9 жыл бұрын
LegIsLate My daughter had a FWD 2002 V70, and it was a snow eater too. I think it's because FWD Volvos have their engines laying transversely over the front axle, which makes for great traction. With throttle-based and ABS-based traction control systems, FWD Volvos do very well in snow. Throw in some snow tires, and they're pretty invincible. And we live in the foothills in Colorado--lots of steep climbs for us too. :-D Hope you're getting great MPG on your DriveE engine!

Hi Alex! I love watching your car reviews, I am with you about all the nonsense with this kind of video on youtube, you barely learn anything about the actual car! Anyway, I have recently purchased this vehicle and was wondering if you by chance messed with the high beams? Mine does not have the active bending lights (boo!) just the halogens and I can't seem to keep them on, only can get them to flash. I have accomplished constant beams only twice. I did look in the manual, you have to have the actual lights on, not on auto and there are two positions, one is for flashing high beams and number two position is supposed to make them stay on. I don't know if mine has a glitch or I just can't seem to find the sweet spot for position #2, I always turn on the left signal instead and the lights just flash. But like I said, did get it to stay on twice but have no idea how I got it. Thanks in advance for any help, keep up the good work!

@AAutoBuyersGuide
@AAutoBuyersGuide 9 жыл бұрын
I would be hard pressed to decide between the AWD 6-cylinder and the turbo/supercharged 4 to be honest. The 8-speed auto is an excellent transmission and the economy is vastly improved but the lack of AWD is kind of a bummer.

great video, Alex. regarding the headlights "changing shape" did you mean it has bi-xenon? bmw has had this for well over a decade on the 3 series. my 02 has it. (a reminder to replace your HID bulbs after a few years because they do diminish in output by nearly half over the years) most people drive around thinking they have awesome lights but don't realize they need to replace the bulbs. also you mention the halogens light up as auxiliary. you sure? as far as I know this is illegal in the U.S. to have two sets of high beams on at the same time. they usually alternate between flash to pass and full bi xenon but not both. I programmed my 02 bmw to have full on double high beams which is standard in Europe. I can also turn on my fogs at the same time as the other two sets of beams for a total of three sets of beams. very useful at night. my last question: do you like LED headlights or hid headlights more? seems the marketplace is trending more towards led but I'm not sure if they actually perform better or if manufacturers are using them because they are more cost effective. thanks!

Alex, great review as usual...I wanted to make some small points...one thing that annoys me is that for a near-luxury vehicle (I consider it a "premium" car, not true luxury) the center arm rest is almost non-existent...I am one of those drivers that considers a true comfortable driving position should have a comfortable center arm rest that supports the right arm...this one is too low and thus not supportive and plus you mentioned the storage space there was just adequate. No really good place to hold sunglasses except behind the center console, which is made of plastic so things tend to slide around in there, they should have made it with some type of rubber matting, or soft touch plastic to alleviate this.These are small nitpicks, but the arm rest is definitely an issue. Also, I heard no mention of the start/stop function which I think works very well and is not obtrusive/noticeable like other systems.
@brucec43
@brucec43 9 жыл бұрын
Volvo makes an accessory sunglass holder that fits onto the grab handle on each side of the front seats. You can use those to hold two pairs, the area behind the control panel, and the console itself. We had an XC60 R design and it had at least 4 pairs, a radar detector, a laptop charger, two phone chargers, and snackswater bottles all stored out of sight in the vehicle. The glove box is huge, also. There is also storage under the rear cargo area suitable for tools, inflator, battery charger pack, etc.

I would question the criteria by which you have the Lexus NX as slightly larger (or the same size) than the XC60. A few reviews have mentioned a somewhat confined feeling front seating area, narrow greenhouse, and of course it's built on the RAV4 chassis. The XC60 is pretty airy.
@AAutoBuyersGuide
@AAutoBuyersGuide 8 жыл бұрын
+Bruno TaTa They are basically the same length and the same width, the Volvo is only larger by 1/2 an inch in either direction. The NX's roofline is lower and there's about one inch less legroom overall (1st + 2nd row) but the difference is very minor. The "feeling" of the NX being smaller is mainly design, in reality they are right about the same size. The biggest difference is the cargo area of the NX where Lexus' design choices make the cargo area about 20% smaller.

Thanks for the review, Alex. I'm still enjoying my 2015 Subaru Forester XT that your review was a great resource for in making my purchase decision. I'll be in the market for a luxury/near luxury small to midsized AWD CUV next year for my wife, and I'm wondering what you foresee in 2015? Will the new Audi Q5 be the one to get? Will Volvo remake their XC60 like their new XC90? Will Acura finally remake their RDX? Thanks Alex on Autos!

Alex on Autos It looks like the 2016 RX will be a whole new model. I like it, my wife doesn't. Since it will mainly be her car, it's no bueno. So, it looks like the 2016 Murano (hopefully the 2016 will have the infotainment bugs worked out that the 2015 has) is still at the top of our list. Thanks.

Volvo first got rid of the 3.2 Ford-made engines, and apparently the Ford-made legacy T6 is about to go too. Just today, Volvo has announced that the DriveE T6 will be mated to AWD in the 60-series Volvos (S60, XC60,V60), even though these cars are still on the old architecture. They must have come up with an engineering solution to do this on the old architecture. It appears that Volvo is not going to wait on the all new 60series cars with SPA to get the DriveE engine mated with AWD. The all new 60 series cars are still a couple of years away, and that's too far out.
@AAutoBuyersGuide
@AAutoBuyersGuide 8 жыл бұрын
+777Outrigger I saw that and it surprised me since Volvo swore up and down that the output shaft on the 8-Speed Aisin transmission was in a place that made it physically impossible to put it and AWD on the S60/XC60/V60, etc. I think it's the right move for them however.
@777Outrigger
@777Outrigger 8 жыл бұрын
+Alex on Autos A lot of people got that from Volvo, but there were also rumors that they were working to make DriveE and AWD compatible on the old architecture. I thought the rumors were just wishful thinking by Volvo enthusiasts. Sometimes the people in public relations don't know what the engineers are doing behind the scenes. :-D

Volvo's engine lineup is currently, frankly a mess. The XC60 (and stablemate S60 & V60) now can be ordered with the Drive-E engines WITH AWD...but confusingly the older 2.5 liter I5 "T5" and 3.0 liter I6 "T6" models stays on sale. I understand this is probably Volvo trying to get rid of the old stock of engines they still have, but why still offer them on sale at the SAME PRICE as the newer Drive-E counterparts?

Pity Volvo's reliability in the last decade has been underwhelming. It's a really nice car.

***** I am not talking about anecdotal data, I am talking about Consumer Reports, JD Power, etc. You know, the ones with large samples, not just your friends.

mountainhobo However Consumer Reports is not an industry wide survey as J.D. Powers is. Although I know that J.D. Powers is sponsored by the manufacturers it is paid for by all manufacturers equally and counts all cars sold in the United States. Consumer Reports survey is comprised of a sample of responses sent out to 150,000 of their own subscribers. I am one of them myself. They are impartial but it is a small slice of the amount of car sold across the United States.

It's been average to above average for the generation starting in 2010 models. TrueDelta shows it slightly above average depending on the year. Ours was trouble free in 4 years of use. ZERO issues.

Bruno TaTa My own record driving Volvos is that they have been very reliable too.

Bruce Solomon Well, I hate to wade into this, but it is true that Volvo's reliability is below average. Both Volvos I have owned have been true to those statistics. However I would still buy another. I liked the car that much and the dealer treated me like gold.

I hope so. I have been trying to get my hands on one but Hyundai has yet to put one in their test fleet near me.

Hey! Alex did you ever notice that the Volvo logo is the 'Mars' symbol which is also the shape that represents the male gender? Volvo is the manly car. I wonder why those feminists never picked up on this :).

I always thought it was a little funny, but its also the alchemy symbol for iron and the company emerged out of a ball bearing manufacturer which sort of makes sense.

Alex on Autos Ah! well it is the symbol of iron because iron is believed to be dominated by Mars. However, if there is such a thing to intend a pun with symbols, I guess we are facing such a situation here with iron having the same symbol :). Anyway, it is a fact, though, that Volvo has the best sheet metal in the world since they produce their steel by applying electricity. The last I checked, the corrosion warranty was 17 years. It is interesting you noticed it though, because I even ask Volvo owners whether they are aware of this symbol or not, and so far I haven't bumped into one that is, :).
