In Spring 2015 I built a timber deck with polycarbonate roof and PVC side-covers & flexi-windows. This video follows the build from start to finish.
Tutorial on fitting side covers is here: • How to Fit Clonmel cov...
Thanks a bunch to the team who helped make this possible: Les, Seamus, the crew at Clonmel Covers and of course my wonderful wife!

It’s actually a very well written and comprehensive book kzfaq.infoUgkxhgbP-6hUnXu_QRaoHgLztgsI0YF3HqR0 . I wanted to pair this with an updated book on local codes to start planning a post-retirement dream shop. I think I have just about everything I need between the two. The extra plans available for purchase towards the end are priced almost as much as full home plans, not little sheds however.

What a great project.Awesome!! great idea of framing the concrete pads with the timber for alignment. I like the use of ceramic tiles with the gorilla glue to act as packers underneath. Don't want to be the old man here, but I would have used timber wrapped in DPC and screwed( tanalized timber I should add), from the underneath of the main floor joists. I have a suspicion those ceramic tiles might fracture and crumble after a few years. But I might be wrong, with that glue there could be sufficient flex and of course being ceramic tiles there will be no problem of rising damp to the timbers. All in all, you are a meticulous craftsman. One other point, perhaps guttering could have been built into the design to save splash back on the PVC panels, but that perhaps will be resolved with gravel or paving slabs. Still, I hope you don't think I'm being picky, a really great video and talk through. Thank you for sharing.

I enjoyed that video now 👍 I put an amazon link below. Its for a white mesh which stops / reduces rain, reduces breeze but let's airflow through. Those pvc walls must make it a little stuffy. Probably some sort of solution there with a little thought. And maybe some white shades on the roof somehow to combat that 35 degrees you mentioned. It all got me thinking for sure. Thanks very much.

Hi, great video quality and content is awesome. I’m amazed at some of the ignorant and rude comments made by some members. The finish is exquisite. Your a man after my own heart. I can tell even from your garden that you take pride in what you do and plan well in advance. I’m in Laois and planning a 4mtr x 4mtr build. Mine will be different as I’m building over an existing natural stone patio and I’m intending on adding a hot tub/outdoor lounge area. I don’t have any questions about what you did as I think you explained everything very well however I’m curious now that it’s 4-5 years post build how it has held up over time and if there is anything you would change retrospectively? Snow isn’t a major concern for us in Ireland however I will check the weight load capacity and not cheap out too much on the polycarbonate sheets 😉 Thanks again 👍👏👍

This is brilliant and just what I was looking for. I have a question or two if you don't mind. 1. How did you screw down the strips for the polycarbonate given that I imagine the width is around 500mm? I ask in terms of reach since you would have one to reach over to pin down. 2. How did you fix the polycarbonate at the wall end of the roof? Did you use a manufactured angle trim of some sort to slip the poly under? Thanks once again for an excellent video.

I absolutely love this project, great work! I am also interested in covering my deck with polycarbonate sheets, but I have concerns of the wind getting underneath and lifting them and also the fact that we have snow here and not quite sure how much weight the sheets are able to handle per sq ft.
@fardinger
@fardinger 8 жыл бұрын
Info I've seen on the web suggests that Polycarbonate is very strong, so my guess is a 5-wall sheet like I used can probably handle a lot of snow. But you'd need to check the technical specs with the supplier to be sure. Also you need to make sure the sheets are well supported underneath, to avoid them bending under the weight. Of course the overall roof timber structure has to be strong enough to take all the weight too. I suggest you get the advice of a roofer or carpenter. Re wind-lift you can secure the sheets with bolt-through glazing 'buttons' near any vulnerable edge.

I can’t give any insight about the snow, but I live in coastal NC (frequent hurricanes). My in-laws installed a material (that looks similar to that) on their (lattice-roofed) pergola-styled outdoor structure 25+ years ago and have never had a problem. They live about 45-60 minutes inland and in a large open area surrounded by fields where they have constant winds, down-drafts, and frequent (inland) hurricanes. Hope that helps.

Brilliant job, was thinking of doing exactly the same over here in Mayo.A few questions: How has it survived the storms (polycarbonate and pvc), Where did you get your polycarbonate and how much did it cost approximately (what are the dimensions of your roof) and how did you fit the joins? I had planned to fit it sheet by sheet, fixing it from the sides but that doesn't look possible, did you have to climb up on the polycarbonate? Finally, thanks for posting this, it's exactly what I was looking for although I would like to have seen footage of you fitting the polycarbonate sheets. CB in Mayo
@fardinger
@fardinger 8 жыл бұрын
+Cartha Byrne - Hi, Yes everything has survived the storms just fine. No leaks in roof. We had christmas dinner on the deck (with the help of a gas heater). Got the polycarbonate from polycarbdirect.co.uk. Can't remember the exact pricing, but it was the cheapest I could find at the time. Delivery was fairly slow, but I guess you get what you pay for! Re the roof joins, we were careful to space the timbers to exactly match the standard roof sheet widths (including expansion space of 10mm). The rag gasket was stapled along the top of the timber & the sheet edges laid on top of that. The aluminium glazing bar was placed on top (across the 2 sheet edges) and screwed through, down onto the timber. This effectively clamped the sheets in place. Also I have a row of glazing 'buttons' along the lower edge of the roof sheets, about a foot back from the edge. These screw through the sheets into noggins below. This is to prevent any wind-lift at the lower (unsupported) edge. We had to get up on top of the roof to place the sheets & fix in the screws. We put in some temporary timber bracing under the roof timbers to support the weight & we used long wide planks on top of the sheets to spread the weight. I highly recommend you do this project. We have gotten loads of use out of this deck.

Super video and project. I am currently doing a similar project so I found this very helpful. I have a metal frame up and I'm using 16ml triple wall polycarbonate sheets for the room so I hope they are strong enough. Next summer I plan to panel the front of it with solid sheets of polycarbonate with sliding doors and also possibly remove the sheets during the summer. the flexible canvas looks great though. Can you say how much it cost? It does look well done and hence very expensive. Thanks again

The posts are 150mm x 150mm in larch. I chose this size because they are nice & chunky looking, and also of course plenty of strength to support the roof. I got them from a saw-mill in Ballyporeen, County Tipperary. But other saw mills might have them also. Larch has good water resistance.

@fardinger
@fardinger 2 жыл бұрын
The roof sheets have held up very well. No discoloration. There's about 8 inches at the front edge, which has wicked water into the interior of the sheets. That's a bit unsightly, but I doubt there's anything I can do about it. Otherwise, no dirt is inside the sheets.
@kib2675

Nice. with your sweet vowels, you are obviously not from an area where snow is a problem, but your timber in the roof is sufficient for 1,5 meter wet snow. With the spacing you have, 1x5 would have been sufficient. When you lock a piece of wood against buckling, like you have, it can take a tremendous load. It is after all one of the strongest fibers we know of. Norms for design are mostly to avoid flexing of floors, so not to frighten. So when you use wood of familar dimension, remember they are for 200-500 kg pr m2.
@fardinger
@fardinger 6 жыл бұрын
Its funny you should mention snow. We had a rare snowfall event here last month. There was 30cm (1 foot) of snow on the roof. It's been more than 30 years since we had that much snow in this part of the world. The roof handled the weight no problem.

What do you use when the polycarbonate sheets meet the brick walls?? That info would be great.. I would just like to say.. You have made a great outside room.
@fardinger
@fardinger 8 жыл бұрын
+26souljah - The roof of our house overlaps the edge of the polycarbonate sheets by about 50cm. So we didn't need to pay much attention to making the sheet edge watertight. As you may have seen in the video, the sheets sit on top of a beam that's attached to the wall. We attached a second timber plank above this main beam, with just enough of a gap to fit the sheet. So the sheet slots in between these 2 pieces of timber, which holds it securely.

Winter temps here are 5 to 10 degrees C in the daytime, and yes we use a gas heater in the winter. Plenty of light comes in through the roof. My plants thrive in there. Also there's plenty of ventilation coming in under the floor & at the front edge of the roof.

One end of each noggin was screwed straight through the roof joist (which was then hidden by the next noggin). The other end of the noggin was diagonal screwed, which unfortunately left screw heads visible near one end of each noggin.

Do not cover air gaps under the decking with concrete or other types of materials. It traps all the moisture and rots the timber.

great video, I've watched several times. I'm about to start a similar deck and pergola project and want to use 2x6's for the roof joist. My span across the roof is 4.4 meters and I'm just looking for info to see if 2x6's are okay for this. can you tell me what your roof span is and how they are now after a few years?

My span is similar to yours. The joists are doing well here, after several years. No obvious sagging. I think the cross-braces between the joists are an important factor, that lends support to the whole structure.

thats great thanks, I think I'll go for 2x6's then. I may bolt steel plates to the sides of them in future years just in case. Wickes do one that 2.5m long

Ya thumbs up, great job and I've learned from it, I'm on a budget and lately i'm checking out different ideas, but really like your setup, i'm curious on the pricing of the outer covering and how does it hold up to our Irish weather.

Hi ,just to say what a great video,we already have decking with roof sheets &are very interested in side covers, with all recent storms we,ve had very worried bout strong winds against side covers,any information appreciated.many thanks

The side covers have stood up to hurricane force winds, and have not been damaged in any way. Along the bottom edge of each cover, there's a thin plank of wood inside the PVC. This sits squarely against the flat side of the deck (just below floor level). This helps to keep the cover from sagging inwards in the wind. Also in winter, I screw this plank into the floor timbers (there's no need to open the covers in winter) which supports the covers against strong winds.

how is the wood holding up now. After five years, are you happy with the water-resistance and so forth?

The timber is all holding up well. No visible rot. The roofing has remained water tight after 5 years.
