Serpentine belt shredded on a 2015 MK6 Jetta TDI SEL with the EA288 CVCA 2.0L engine.
Checked all of the pulleys and they spun freely with no issues even when car was warmed up!
Dug deeper into the problem and it turns out the tensioner pivot had failed causing the belt to want to be pushed off the system causing it to be shredded by the grooved pullies.
Replaced the tensioner and we noticed the new tensioner is of a different design. It appears VW has revised this part to a much more robust design.
Keep an eye on your tensioner if you have this old design because it could happen to you to!
Tools you will need:
17mm socket for lug bolts. Nice lug bolt set from Tekton: amzn.to/494IKjV
16mm socket/wrench for tensioner pivot bolt.
Socket: amzn.to/494IKjV or similar 12point
Socket T-handle: amzn.to/4b8CQjF or similar
10mm triple square for tensioner mounting bolts
This is a nice set from Neiko: amzn.to/4b8CQjF Or use similar like this: amzn.to/4b8CQjF
T25 for wheel well liner fasteners. Very nice set from Neiko: amzn.to/4b8CQjF

Any video on the alternator on the mk6 I have a mk6 Jetta tie looking for info on removal and replacement

I have not had to replace the alternator yet on our Jetta. You would have to take the belt off like I did in this video and I believe you have to take the belt tensioner off too

Did you notice any audible note of the tensioner failing before it at the belt? We have a 15 Passat and can hear a sound change when turning on/off the ac, I’m hoping it’s just the tensioner, AC blows plenty cold.
@EandEDesign
@EandEDesign 2 жыл бұрын
Sadly we didn't notice anything :( What kind of sound change are you hearing? Compressor clutches always make some noise so it could just be that?
@740GLE
@740GLE 2 жыл бұрын
@@EandEDesign no clutches on these variable displacement AC compressors 😉 It’s a rattle noticeable at idle that disappears when you turn off AC button, HVAC fans still going. I’ve noticed it over the past 50k, it’s just seems to come and go. I figure at this point changing out the tensioner is cheap insurance.

@@740GLE I am having this same issue, when I cycle the A/C on there has been a notiable rattle at idle that goes away under load. However, it has gotten much worse recently and is audible at all times. I just checked the pulley alignment for the serpentine belt and the tensioner is clearly out of alignment. I assume this is the same issue of the tensioner pivot failing as the pulley itself was replaced when I did the timing belt.

It’ll sound like the dmc but it’s not. And the ac pulley just locks. Normally if you get the rattle it’s the alternator pulley

Is the tensioner supposed to be bouncing like that? I had the same issue . Replaced with a new aftermarket belt still bounces alot. Replaced it again with an oem still the same play in belt.
@EandEDesign
@EandEDesign Жыл бұрын
Yes, bouncing of a tensioner is normally especially as loads change in the system. This particular design does not have a shock to dampen the load changes. Some do, which makes it jump less. The particular issue in this video is a design flaw with the old revision tensioner that causes it to over tension belts and destroy them!

No bro.its not normal this bouncing.your problem is the alternator pulley
@joshuathorsland9211
@joshuathorsland9211 3 ай бұрын
your tensioner failed because your alternator clutch pulley was locked up, causing the belt to bounce putting stress on it@@EandEDesign

@@joshuathorsland9211 This is a non dampened system. The tensioner will change positions with load and rpm. Completely normal with any belted systems. This is why you will see more complicated systems have hydraulic shocks to dampen these changes. The tensioner in this video that failed was an old revision. The design flaw has been fixed in the new revision. Thanks for watching!

Hi sir how long last jetta timing belt & serpentine belt ???
@EandEDesign
@EandEDesign 3 ай бұрын
This will depend on the model. Timing belts are usually around every 100000 miles. Serpentine belts have similar life however sometimes have to be replaced sooner than that. Try searching online for a maintenance schedule for you year, make, model and you should be able to find the recommended intervals.

@@EandEDesign I have a similar situation on my 2015 golf but my failure is at 138k. It is a shame because the serpentine belt was replaced at 117k. Oh well. My repair shop is a 4 blocks from my home, so that is very good. Would it be good to inspect the Alternator pulley too at this point?

@@garyklein7900 I am glad yours lasted that long! It was disappointing this failed so early on us. The replacement we put in is still going strong. You can inspect the pulleys but I doubt they have any damage as they are all metal
