I think you have the 981 weight incorrect, not sure how you got an extra 200lb. The 981 is a lighter vehicle than the older 987. You can validate this from any Porsche publication and Porsche made a point to highlight this during their launch of the 981. I own a 981S and the owner’s manual had the weight at 2985-lbs for a Cayman S PDK. Maybe the Boxster being a convertible and in GTS trim adds a 200-lb penalty over a Cayman S.

I've had my guards red 2015 Boxster GTS 6MT for just over a year now. Without a doubt the best year of my life, driving-wise. I love my car - the look, the finish, the handling, the sound, I love it all. Life is short. Drive a little red sportscar.

I have a 15 GTS Boxster, before buying it I drove the 987S, as well as the 718 GTS and the 981 GTS in terms of emotion and sound its just hard to beat. I am actually amazed that in sports exhaust mode that its even legal, its incredibly loud and so much fun

All of the 981s sound so so so good. I’d totally take a base Boxster just for the noise… and maybe put an obnoxious exhaust on it

The 981S is my favorite dual purpose & best value proposition Porsche. Even the LSD (Porsche Torque Vectoring) is optional on the 981GTS, but it is hard the tell the difference in public roads. I would with go with a 981S MT with right the options (PSE a must). You can get nicely optioned low mileage 981S MT example for $55K-60k. There seems to be a $15K-20K premium in today's used mkt for a 981GTS over the 981S, which I do not think is necessary. Not only does the 981 sound better then the new NA 718 GTS 4.0, a 981S is around 40% to 50% + less. Lightly used 718GTS examples are selling for over $110 USD. Nice review. I enjoyed taking a peak of the Fk8 LE as well.

Great point on PTV. A great option for track driving but unnecessary on the street. Would be interesting to do a 718/981 comparison video someday.

I have a 981 S with all the GTS buttons and it's great! Even has the PTV with LSD. The GTS does have a slightly different map so apparently pops and bangs a little more, mine bangs more than enough as it is!

The 981 GTS looks nice, drives phenominally, sounds absolutely great, is rare (lower production number than a GT4), compact, technically rock solid, well assembled and low in running costs. A modern Porsche with all the attributes of an aircooled one. Perfect drivers GT car.

Nicely done review. Agree it sounds amazing. Probably the best sounding factory exhaust of all non GT cars. I recently got my hands on a limited edition 718 Boxster 25 to add to my family of fun cars (M2 Comp and S2000). It sounds much better than I expected but not as good as the 981 GTS. These are awesome rally and GT touring cars. Best sounding car for me is still my track dedicated S2000. 😜

What do I think of the 981 GTS, I love it, love it, love it , that sound unfortunately is gone forever, but I will be remembered forever, I had a 14 Boxster s and installed the Porsche sport exhaust and it transformed the car literally. Just an fyi the Base the S the GTS and the Spyder all sound the same with the sports exhaust , which is great if you can’t afford the higher models. Also that intake sound is so addictive. You can hear the minute changes in sound as the rpm’s rise and fall right behind your drivers ear!! Boxsters are so underrated that it’s a shame. I drove the 991 gen 911 and I think the Boxster feels better because of the mid engine design. Everyone who is a car fanatic desires to rent one or test drive one. It’s an unforgettable experience 1000%.

I have a 2014 Baxter s and it's an awesome car in every way. Looks, performance, and comfort. Don't care that a few cars are a little faster. This is a great sports car as it is.

My 2016 Cayman GTS on scales with no fuel is 2965 lbs. I have the X73 option (fixed shocks and 10 mm lower), manual transmission, and Porsche torque vectoring (limited slip). Your review car and mine both have manual seat adjustment which saves 65 lbs. I'm not sure why your test car was more than 200 lbs heavier than mine. I agree with everything you said in your video. For road use and occasional track, autocross, etc, the 2015-2016 981.1 GTS pair are the best cars Porsche ever built. There is a reason they are holding their value so well.

Great review, mate. After driving a 992 for the weekend, I decided it just wasn’t worth it (for me). I then bought a 981 with Sport Chrono and PSE, and drove it across the same 500km of mountain and coastal roads, and it was actually more exciting to drive than the 992. It is spectacular.

In UK the main competition for the 981 GTS is the 981 S. The price difference is 20k £ which would be around 25k $. In my opinion, this is not worth it. You can retrofit or upgrade your Boxster S with the must have upgrades and I think you would end up cheaper. For instance, I don't like the PSE which comes standard on the GTS. I want to take the car for long drives and I'm quite sure that the loud exhaust will get tiresome very quickly for me 😊. I like the GTS interior trim/seats but that's about it for me

It's a great car and sounds awesome. A cheaper 981 S will sound exactly the same w PSE! And even better w LT headers. You have to spend at least 5k to make a new 718 GTS 4.0 sound this good with aftermarket cat back.

I feel lucky to have found a Cayman R during my search for a 981 S, and I’m so glad I bought it. The NA 3.4L, mid-engine, RWD, hydraulic steering, and manual gearbox is as much of a driver’s car as one can hope for. Just made some minor suspension and brake upgrades, added a Soul Performance exhaust, and it’s an amazing track, autox and daily driver! Can’t go wrong with almost anything Boxster/Cayman, but for me the R is the perfect.

Everyday driver did a segment that’s great for that, they all picked the cayman R, it’s hard to find one for under 70k. That’s why I went with second best option of 981 S

I love the Boxster/Cayman generations. I do not appreciate the crackle/pop sound of that exhaust when reved out. It surprises me that I think that too since I used to have a Ford Focus RS. It popped and banged all the time. At the beginning it was ok then it grew tiresome and juvenile.

Manual Supra vs 981 GTS would be an interesting comparison. I think the Porsche is probably better dynamically but the extra power and tech in the Supra would be nice to have.

I bought a C7 Grand Sport Manual with 12k miles. Picked it up 10/2021 for $62k. 1LT. Weighed 3390 lbs with half tank of fuel. Great track car compared to my tuned 987.2 manual I just sold.

I'm surprised the 981 PSE sounds that good. Better than 987.2 PSE examples I've heard. That's why I chose a Fabspeed exhaust instead for my 987.2. That being said, I still think the Carrera GT, GT3, and new GT4RS has it beat from Porsche. For a top down experience, go listen to the new open top 911 Speedsters. These convertibles have the same high-revving motor as the GT3. Absolutely glorious.

I agree with 981 sounding is phenomenal, but on the driving dynamics 982 is way better, steering feel, handling in the corner and acceleration. When I drive 981 and 982 on the same mountain, 981 feels like lots of bigger than 718 in the corner. I think Porsche want 981 to be a gt car, softer, long gear ratio and comfortable.

@@jackwicker drove the 718 and the 981 back to back. Easy choice. The 718 is already cheaper than a 981, which went up in price in Germany (20.000 km ones). The sound of the 4-cyl is dull, but it is super fast. But would you get your GTS for a better 0-100 time? Don’t think so.

Stock Challenge Stradale exhaust but with de-cat pipes in place of the catalytic converters. The issue with Capristo imo, is that they make Ferraris no longer sound like a Ferarri. Also the standard Mustang GT350 exhaust.

Best sounding exhaust can’t beat FVD Brombacher plus tune for 981 GTS or base 2.7 it’s even more than stock sound and you get lovely GT3 racing after tones as well which you just don’t get on other exhausts except for Dundon Motorsport exhausts which are also track tested. See Morethan Motorsport for GTS track sounds my Chanel for 2.7 sound on track. Great review and you have captured beautiful sound.

@@johnmitchell2269 Having driven both the 981 S/GTS and the GT350, the Porsches sounded better by a good bit to me...I still loved the GT350 experience, though, and Ford V8s are my favorite-sounding domestic V8s. The F355 is probably my favorite-sounding road car ever, so no shame on the 981s for losing out to that.

I think you will find it is the symposer that is unique to the GTS. It a Porsche concept of a tube that runs from the engine compartment to the cabin. Burbling occurs when you back off the throttle and there is a sudden, uneven exhaust pressure aft of catalytic converters.
