Been a long minute since my last upload but in this two part series, I first attack the power steering with a cooling upgrade to prevent the dreaded power steering rack failures of '08 to present STIs. Thanks to Hayden Automotive/SMP for sponsoring the cooler.
After replacing the rack & pinion and installing the cooler, the steering feedback has been smooth, solid, and much more quiet. I also added Whiteline's steering rack bushings. Radiant heat could be felt from the heat exchanger so it is definitely doing it's job ripping heat away from the system.
Part 2 will be coming soon, where I will be building an engine oil cooler kit from scratch and installing it.
Stay tuned!!

You got a leaky rack and pinion that you have to replace? Add a cooler before putting it back together.

Joe, really like your videos and your thought processes for the mods you incorporate into your STI. I had my steering rack replaced by Servco when I hit 40K miles. I'm at 58K (+18k) now and I can hear the "squealing" noises at full rotation left/right :( I concur with you, not sure why Subaru hasn't had a warranty fix for this endemic steering rack failure.
@octurbojoe
@octurbojoe 6 жыл бұрын
Alexander Pura I'm telling you, the heat struggle is real on this car. Not sure if Subaru's power steering vendor (Showa) has lowered their quality in rack and pinion internals but excessive heat degrades the fluid and warps seals. When that happens, contaminants can get inside the seal surface and allow air in. Air displaces the fluid and that's where leaks come from. I guess it's easier for Subaru to make money for the amount of racks they can get at the dealer vs fixing it. In my opinion, for 2015, they wasted money with that stupid sound tube when they could've added a decent two-pass cooler at minimum.

OCTurboJoe I live in an apartment complex and I can't do extensive work on my STI in the parking garage. I'd like to replace my steering rack with the '15 or higher rack and do your cooler mod at the same time. I'll have to wait till we move to another place, or the mainland.

Ever since I added my p/s cooler, my power steering pump failed. I have the Mooresport AN adapter fitting on my p/s pump, AN lines and a Earls cooler. No leaks anywhere, just a straight pump failure. Any ideas as to why? (I’ve fixed it since then, but I just wanted some feedback.) Awesome work on the vid though.
@octurbojoe
@octurbojoe 6 жыл бұрын
Eddie Tapia Perhaps it was already failing prior to installing the cooler, or air was still present in the system due to not bleeding it completely after adding the p/s cooler, which can also cause pump failure.
@kreduus
@kreduus 5 жыл бұрын
Do you have a video to remove the fluid pump? I've been having to re-add more and more fluid. Went underneath and it looks like on the pump someone over tightened a bolt likely because of a bad gasket. Wasnt sure how difficult it was to remove the pump as you did and install some clean gaskets.
@octurbojoe
@octurbojoe 5 жыл бұрын
I didn't have to remove the pump for this procedure. I only messed with the return side and reservoir. The pump is pretty straightforward and simple. Just make sure to drain the entire system and replace all seals and gaskets, including the low pressure line o-ring on top. Air can find its way in the system if the o-ring is damaged.

What size fittings did you use??? Can you list the part numbers for the fittings??
@octurbojoe
@octurbojoe 4 жыл бұрын
They are all -6AN push lock fittings with 3/8" ID power steering hoses. For the oil cooler inlet and outlet, you need two -10AN ORB male to -6AN male adapters in order to run -6AN hose ends off of it. I don't have part numbers but this is the important information you need to know as there are many brands of fittings to choose from.

Still chugging strong. No leaks, noises, or failures from the power steering system. I am about to flush it in a couple months just to keep the fluid fresh. I may add an inline filter to catch anything that may contaminate the system components but overall, it's running like a champ.

@@abdelrahmanalqasmy4733 The return line from the rack shouldn't be much. I'd assume the feed line from the reservoir to the pump itself will leak everything out, as well as the lines down at the bottom where the valve housing is.
@abdelrahmanalqasmy4733
@abdelrahmanalqasmy4733 4 жыл бұрын
@@octurbojoe Managed to do it yesterday without draining the reservoir since my oil is new there was no point of draining the whole thing. The return line barley dripped some oil. The difficultly was working around AOS hoses (Killer B). How is this AOS doing with you. It passes fair amount of oil in my car.
@octurbojoe
@octurbojoe 4 жыл бұрын
@@abdelrahmanalqasmy4733 Yes, the return line isnt always filled with fluid. You can route the lines in any direction you'd like, I just chose the shortest path I could take without blocking any important parts of the engine. The Killer B AOS is something. It was fine on my stock turbo. But with the 20G, it bypasses more oil than I'd like. So I added a Radium catch between the top outlet and the turbo inlet. Lo and behold, the catch can caught about a beer capful of oil within a thousand miles. I opened up the Killer B AOS to find that it isn't efficient in separating oil. There are others that also have issues with it bypassing. So now I'm looking at other options. I'll keep everyone posted.
