When your power steering fluid that is found in the rack gets too hot, it cannot maintain the same lubrication capability which leads to the system failing. More often than not, it is the power steering pump that is the weak point. When the pump has to create more pressure for the rack, it heats up the fluid even more. Some cars like mine come equipped with them, however they are typically adequate. You will see in the video how there is a cooler, however they didn’t even bother installing a radiator for better cooling. If you ever beat on your car on a hot day, watch your PS fluid temps rise to the point where it will boil.
In this video, I upgrade my power steering cooler to a much larger 10-row radiator style cooler from Stillen. It comes with all of the required hardware, fittings, and lines to significantly decrease those temps. You will be able to find all of the products and tools that were used in this video below.

I would never use thread sealer on any fitting unless it is a n.p.t. style fitting.

Unless specified by the manufacturer for some reason, you should never use any kind of thread sealant on AN fittings since they rely on the taper to seal. It's also a better idea to mock up your hose ends to get the hose length right, assemble the ends to the hoses, and then tighten the hose ends to the male fittings.
@stuckinmygarage6220

Correct. AN is a design complete. Plus, most assemblies are easier to finish when stuff is lose, so that you can detect stuff like interference/bending/stress/spacing. This example was simple, though.

One end of the fitting was AN, the other was not. The larger/cooler end was thread and O-ring seal. The larger end (see at exactly 7:09) should be pipe doped (sealant used). The larger end does NOT have the cone-shapped "AN" sealing flange and the O-ring alone cannot be trusted. I agree that the AN end should not be pipe-doped.

you went with the stacked plate version of a cooler, which is the most efficient type. hope this met your needs on the track. that oem tube and fin type just doesn't cut it for drifting it seems.

How do u know this cooler performs better than stock? The stock version appears to be less hose restrictive. No 90 degree fitting bends.

What if we have electric power steering? Is there anything we could use to prolong the life of it (EPS)?

You can change the electric power steering fluid more often 😜 All kidding aside, there isn't typically that you can do to prolong the life of it, other than ensuring the boots are not torn and in good working condition

I've dealt with g35 power steering pump failures/rack failures. Perhaps this is all due to the lack of power steering coolers on these early g35/350z models. Overheating fluid wearing out these components makes logical sense. Purely coincidental?
@ClownWhisper
@ClownWhisper 2 жыл бұрын
Power steering cooling is an absolute scam it does nothing. The next time you drive for more than 15 minutes in a city setting turn your car off get out take your reservoir cap off and put your finger in the cool and I promise you you won't burn yourself. Engineers need to justify their jobs by creating useless crap like this

You should use a thread sealant with orings
@evozero905
@evozero905 4 жыл бұрын
None of the specific fitting you have with that kit should be used with any thread sealant o-ring type npt fittings don't thread sealant non o-ring npt fittings do. The AN/JIC fittings never ever ever should be used with any thread sealant the taper seat designed into the fitting provides a mechanical seal. Please add a disclaimer to your video adding a sealant to a AN/JIC fitting can actually cause a leak with can be dangerous (think fuel) or very expensive (think engine oil). AN fittings were designed by the Army and Navy to not use any sealant which can fail at the extremes of temperature these things were designed for space flight and war planes.
@rogjackson
@rogjackson Жыл бұрын
The junction between the fitting and the cooler (the larger threaded part) doesn't have an "AN" flange seal. So those threads should be doped. The other end, smaller with the sealing flange of the AN style, should not be pipe doped. In other words, one end of the threaded fitting (larger threaded end going to cooler which he points to at exactly 7:09) does need pipe dope because there is no "AN" cone-shaped flange seal. While there is an O-ring, I wouldn't trust the O-ring alone; it is better to use pipe dope on those threads along with the O-ring. Basically, if it seals on threads, you should use pipe dope unless there is some other sealing physics going on such as tapered threads, where the size of the threaded device is smaller on one end providing a sealing force by viture of a clamping force during tightening. Also, I may be mistaken, but I don't think he's contemplating space flight or war with this vehicle, but I do like your optimism.
@evozero905
@evozero905 Жыл бұрын
@@rogjackson then that would be a non o ring type NPT or BSP which would on either account would be a candidate for either thread tape or dope as both are taper threads and not a joint type based on a 2 part conical seat to make the seal AN/JIC

This is absolutely ridiculous I have made it my mission in the past 20 years to debunk power steering coolers and in my mind I have I have never ever ever even on the hottest days of the year not being able to take the power steering cap off of the reservoir and stick my finger in it and it's warm maybe the hottest I've ever felt it was like less than a cup of coffee. Power steering coolers were invented to keep engineers justifying their jobs stop being ridiculous
@rogjackson
@rogjackson Жыл бұрын
Power steering fluid, a form of hydraulic fluid, can most certainly heat up if doing autocross type constant steering work. This might occur during drifting, autocross, racing on a road course, etc. Also, consider a hot day with ambient temps above 100F, elevated power steering fluid temps can cause premature pump failure over time. This is well known; hence the coolers.
