+Hardway Outdoors look for banks, logs, or shallow water where they like to rest and come out of the water. You can find these places by their droppings and small trails and paths. Set a leg hold right under the water next to the bank where they are coming out of the water.

John LeKernec your comment about the mink was a good one and just made me think.. you know most people think that trappers/hunters pursue and kill animals either because they want it for a resource or because they like killing. But the truth is that in this day and age the vast majority of hunting and trapping comes from the desire to match wits with a wild and free animal. You can hardly imagine the satisfaction of having spent weeks and months pursuing an intelligent and beautiful animal in it's home turf and then humanely harvest it. We don't hunt to kill; we hunt to have hunted.
