VW's diesel Jetta has long been seen as the fuel sipping alternative to the Prius. Now in its sixth generation, the Jetta gets a mild refresh for the 2015 model year along with a brand-new 2.0L diesel engine for even more fuel savings. How does the diesel Jetta drive? How does it compare to the Corola, Civic, Prius, Forte and Mazda3? Will the diesel save you money? All those questions and more are answered in this detailed review.

Excellent as always; I own a 2012 TDI Golf (6-speed manual) and think you were pretty bang on in most criticisms. For me the torque, and VW handling and ride and interior quality was what convinced me, each was so much better than anything else I tested. I look forward to your review of the new Golf and competitors but I'll pretty much watch anything you film at this point. :)

Looking at 3:08 this seems to be the newer EA288 engine which does have the Adblue-drinking SCR in the system. These 2015 Jettas & Golfs should get by EPA easy by dialing up the consumption of the Adblue fluid. No changes to power & MPG should be a godsend, as Adblue if brought in bulk isn't really all that expensive relative to the non-SCR equipped EA189 which will require a hit to MPGs to pass emissions.

I had a 2012 and now 2015 TDI manuals. So much fun to drive....I look forward to drives and long commutes. I drive 8 hours from San Diego to San Fran consistently and this is the way to go. I frequently drive east into Colorado and Utah as well and the TDI and VWs do so well in mountains and snow. I've owned a LOT of cars and these are my favorites. Just my opinion.

Thank you for all of your extremely detailed and thoughtful reviews! I have a question about the TDI vs the 1.8T... Does the torque in the TDI feel more "throw you back in the seat" when you are off the line? I love that torque feeling, but wasn't sure if it's really something that would stand out vs the 1.8T (which I drove in a passat a few days ago) Which do you prefer feel wise?
@AAutoBuyersGuide
@AAutoBuyersGuide 9 жыл бұрын
Daniel Lachman No, the TDI is never going to throw anyone back in their seat, the 1.8T is much peppier in that regard.
@DannyPops

@AAutoBuyersGuide

+pritam m The Golf is probably more practical overall even though it's going to be a little shorter than the Jetta. The cargo opening makes it easier to put larger items in the back.

One question, in your handling department I have driven FWD vehicles with the torque differentiating axel and found that I am fighting which side has more traction (like the Lexus RX FWD). Is there anything to go on with torque from the diesel causing same issue on a light car such as this? Besides putting on low temp endurance tires for better traction. (Bfg's A/T on the RX for instance which would cause lawsuits for over grip should an accident happen)? How is rain performance? Noticeable power drop or steering jerk over sand buildup or Murphy's water puddle? (Sprinklers) Thanks
@AAutoBuyersGuide
@AAutoBuyersGuide 9 жыл бұрын
Torque steer is never something that can be totally removed in a FWD car although it can be mitigated with limited slip differentials, steering knuckles that bring the axes more in line with one another and of course the electronic brake systems that act as a limited slip differential. Personally it doesn't bug me that much and the TDI really wasn't a problem because of the low HP figures.

Doing it in 4K is a good idea, one day the 1080p TVs will be replaced by 4K. Just the same way the old glass CRTs were replaced by the 1080p flat TVs. I did like the old glass TVs though. They were indestructible unless you drop them while moving them to another room and some of them were horribly heavy! Many of the big ones weighed hundreds of pounds and to make it worse some of them have no handles and were difficult to lift because of that.

Diesel being more expensive is the exception, not the rule. Historically, diesel has always been cheaper than gasoline in the US. The price of gasoline is more volatile than diesel, so recently as crude oil prices have fallen, gasoline prices have fallen as well. Diesel is cheaper to refine than gasoline, and recently has once again become cheaper than gasoline.

Thought I'd check out this video just to keep tabs on the competition. My problems with VW's in general: I hate how the headlight switch is not mounted on the turn-signal stalk, American cars are guilty of this as well. VW's are plain Jane as plain Jane can be. I'm sure they'll age well enough on account of their blandness. The front end is just so spartan looking. You refer to it as elegant and restrained, to me Audi is elegant and restrained, Volkswagen is just cheap and bland, but to each their own. And that reliability.....

For a Volkswagen Sedan, a ride of 6/10 is simply unacceptable in my view. Question: is the Jetta interior for the US market cheapened out compared with the Euro version, just like the Passat?
@uk574
@uk574 9 жыл бұрын
Before the facelift it was cheapened compared to EU version - dashboard was made from hard plastic. But now - I think that it looks the same... (But still it is cheap inside - just look at those door panels :/)
@AAutoBuyersGuide
@AAutoBuyersGuide 9 жыл бұрын
In essence, yes. However this has allowed VW to be more competitive and sell more, so it has worked. As it turns out, there was little sales value in having the nicest plastics in the segment, so VW went for segment average and they have been flying off the shelves. As much as I miss the old Passat and Jetta interiors, I have to admit that it was a good business decision.

welcome to the UK (European) Jetta GT 150ps 2.0LTR TDI 6-speed manual. I have one identical to car featured but in Silk Blue Metallic colour, don't have the Led daytime/Xenon light option on mine. I enjoy it, bit more different choice here than the hundreds of Golf's in UK. interestingly our UK cars do not have the addblue system on ours here even though identical 150ps EA288 TDI units. list price here is £23.000 for the Jetta GT 150ps TDI (your "SEL" trim). lastly why is it every time people mention VW the US car shops seem unable to maintain them properly so effectively undoing the high reliability of the products that they are when maintained correctly? UK reliability up with the best here/European cars.

the VW has a bad issue with the accelerator pedal , If you are uphill in traffic, and try to press the gas pedal and brake at the same time, to keep the engine loaded up, the engine will go limp and roll back, (into the car behind you). Trying to get across the lane of traffic, same thing, Have the foot on the brake and try to load the engine when your ready to cross traffic. the engine will go limp, with you in the oncoming traffic lane. The radio on the car is garbage also. reception is terrible.

Jesus Alex, high 40s mpg? Is that hand calc'd or indicated on the IP? By the way, this morning I was in Lafayette Indiana, where gas was…wait for it…$1.81 and diesel was $3.45. That's a factor of almost double. So, DEF aside which is negligible, take the diesel mileage, halve it, and that's the number to beat if you're shopping gas vs diesel. Two things to think about, assuming the buyer is such a penny pincher that they bother to calculate all this, in which case why aren't they buying a used Corolla in the first place. Even the most minor repair on the diesel will drive you into the poor house and obliterate any fuel savings. On the other hand, the diesel will mop up when it comes to resale. But if you are buying a car with a ROI of 8.5 years, you clearly don't care about resale. So taken objectively, with the diesel you get less power, slower acceleration, more noise, AND higher cost. And yet I still prefer diesels, rationality be damned.
@AAutoBuyersGuide
@AAutoBuyersGuide 9 жыл бұрын
I always calculate the mileage figures manually and verify them with the car's computer. If they are off by more than a few percent I'll mention it, the VW was very close.

Alex on Autos Do you know how many times the vehicle regenerated?
@AAutoBuyersGuide
@AAutoBuyersGuide 9 жыл бұрын
***** No, there is no visual indication to when that happens so I could not say.
@Cm22c
@Cm22c 9 жыл бұрын
Alex on Autos Thanks for the answer, Alex. Well, a dip in the instantaneous mileage reading is the easiest way to tell, but there is no sure indication like a light that comes on. I ask because a diesel car may not regenerate in 380 miles. If a car didn't regenerate in the last 380 miles, and if you averaged 49 miles per gallon, you could see significantly lower mileage over the next 380. How often a car regenerates can depend greatly on driving style and can impact mileage greatly.
@AAutoBuyersGuide
@AAutoBuyersGuide 9 жыл бұрын
***** We put 670 miles on the Jetta TDI, our time was cut a little short, but in that time span according to VW there should have been at least two regeneration cycles. The AdBlue makes that much less obvious however compared to the prior system which ran rich/lean and cleaned without the DEF.

Just don't get the almost swooning over the VW exterior designs. I see this car and I think 2002 Accord. Same for the interior - so much better ergonomics out there. Now, for driving, sportiness, and such? Yeah, it's definitely worth considering.
