The Touareg has an optional package called "Terrain Tech" with Air Suspensions that lift the car up to 11.8 in (300mm) with standard tires, central and posterior diff lock, and low range gears; it fits sized-up tires without mods.

In terms of off-roading (at least in Europe) this car has optional off-road package with proper low range and I believe some diff-locks...

That's the non air suspension model that's why its not really practical for offroad use and you don't see the different Road adjusting modes for suspension. air suspension models are much more offroad capable and more comfortable.

For $65k, how does this compare to a comparably equipped Q5 TDI? Also, unfortunately diesel is not cheaper than gas in all parts of the country.

+spl1011 The Touareg is quite a bit larger than the Audi Q5, more comparable to the Audi Q7. The Audi Q5 thus, is lighter and quicker with the same 3.0 TDI. Pricewise, you'd have to build and compare with their respective online outlets.
