There was that rumor a year ago about the Mini Countryman receiving this drive-train in reverse for an AWD option. Either way, the i8 owners are Beta users and I'm happy others down the line will benefit.

Alex, your reviews are great. I can never afford this car. But I find it interesting when you explain all its details. When you ride this car, I feel like I am riding it with you. If I did have $170,000 lying around, I would have definitely paid off my home mortgage and used the remainder for any charity work, rather than buying this car. I love your reviews though :-)

The doors are butterfly design. Scissor style doors are used on Lamborghinis, which are more practical because they don't get in the way of your head and require less lateral room to open making parking spots easier to find. I don't understand why BMW equipped this car with an impractical unconventional door system. They should have gone with scissor or gull-wing design. Good review nonetheless.

Not sure why you are so fanatical about the width of the front tires. Remember, the wider the tire, the more friction with the road, and the slower the car goes with worse gas mileage. Think mountain bike vs racing bike tire width. Therefore, I would not be so quick to try and get after market wider front tires. Then, you put this car's handling down, again because of the tire width of the front tires. I watched the video from Top Gear UK, when they drove this car along with a M3, and they picked this car as the winner. Otherwise great review though. Really appreciate all the detail you go into with the ins and out of this car.

Very good review, and very informative. One thing I've disappointed about is the BMW LCD dash display. The new Audi dash displays everything and looks much more nicer, the BMW display looks very dated.

At first the car cost to performance ratio made me question its value. Since then I've learn to appreciate EVs and PHEVs. In that regard, this car is even cooler than the Tesla Model S P90D.

Is there a reason you compared it to the NSX and 918 but not the McLaren P1 or LaFerrari? And the Lamborghini Asterion, if it wasn't a concept. They're all Hybrid/Plug-in Hybrid supercars.

I don't understand though. why are people so obsessed with this car and calling it a super car? the teslar is better in every way and cheaper but people go nuts over this car. I'd rather pay more money for a car that is actually good then a hype car that can't even go 50 miles on EV but is called a supercar

Money can do everything

For that kind of money, imho, the Tesla is a better choice. Also seems weird to have what is supposedly an eco-car and have leather in it. Should have the option for micro-fiber or Alcantera. Rather have a Mustang GT 350 for fun and a used Prius or Leaf for environmental responsibility. Probably average out to the same or less costs.

I hate when people call this car a super car when it's far from it!!!! They just want to say it is to be able to charge extra for the title!!! I drive a 2014 BMW 650i xdrive 2 door coupe.... 440hp is more inclined with a supercar of old than this car is!..... I just can't see this car as a supercar at least not yet

I think this is way too over-engineered

History will talk about the i8 and use phrases like "ponderous turd" and "engineering exercise" and "vaporware". Imagine how excited we would all be about it if it was called an M8, costs 100k, and had the regular turbo straight six. Or, imagine how excited we would be if it was called the X8 and had the same drivetrain but was a minivan or SUV. Or how excited we would be if it was called the Z4 and looked like it does but was a Miata competitor. As it stands now, it doesn't excite me on any level because it doesn't know what it is supposed to be. Conclusion: in 5 years you'll buy one that is out of warranty and you'll get it for $4000 because it's broken and would cost $40,000 to fix, and you'll stick a small block chevy in it and really have something!
