2016 BMW R 1200 RT Motorcycle Review - The little brother in many ways to the K1600 GT, this guy packs a huge twin boxer engine that feels much like a big v-twin cruiser. It's torque curve is very flat giving very good power no matter where you are. Low speed control is phenomenal especially when you consider the overall bike size. The body carries many of the same features as the 1600 without the luxury items but it does feel and perform IMO more like an adventure bike than sport tourer. For me, I look for power, smoothness and speed in a tourer and the feel of the big twin makes me want it in a different frame.

So far, I have experienced absolutely NO negatives with mine. I am perhaps the most pleased cycle owner in the country right now. There is a reason all the mags love the new rt. No, it is not a car, so you might get wind and water on you, and it is not dead silent. It is the absolute ONLY cycle, right now. For me. The mirrors are perfect. For me. The brakes, the torque, the speed, the handling, and every other possible thing I can think of after 3700 miles, is 100 percent right. For me. The shift pro is great, especially when shifting after second gear at around 4000 rpm all the way up to 6th, as you will be moving along really well, leaving all but the most aggressive riders and cagers behind. I don't race, especially against 180 mph+ rocket riding fools, so I could care less if they can go faster and quicker than me. I am comfortable going up to 110 mph once in a while, and can cruise all day, comfortably, at 80 or so, and that is perfect. For me. I don't ride to "compare penis sizes" with other riders. I ride my own line, on my own time, and in my own way, and could care less if there are "quieter, smoother, bigger and uncut" cycles out there. I have found my machine. Now, guys, go out and find what is right. For you. And, by the way, after riding for 40 years before selecting the rt, I did NOT do a demo ride. I had ridden various other models, owned a bunch of cycles, and had ridden some friends' beemers over the years, so I knew I would enjoy this rt. I do. Absolutely. But then, I would also enjoy a Guzzi, a Harley, a Yamaha, Kawasaki, etc...because they are what they are, and it just happens that some of them are more right. For me. I can't wait to read reviews on the new electric cycles. Talk about smooth, fast, comfortable, etc...but they won't have a lot of character. No clunk. No vibration. Yawn.

I also liked the RT much better than you did. So much so that I sold my FJR and then my Super Tenere and bought a 2016 RT. I absolutely love this bike. It has all of the things I loved about he FJR without all of the things I hated about the FJR. Balance is incredible, upright seating position is very comfortable, and the stock windscreen creates a pocket for the driver that is all but completely silent. The stock driver and passenger seats are way more comfortable than the FJR's. The liquid cooled frumpy boxer winds out nicely. Acceleration is especially impressive if you have the gear assist pro which is clutchless. I have nothing bad to say about this bike. The premium model comes completely loaded with all the options you have to add to the FJR. Plus the FJR still does not offer a radio or GPS built in. I am now spoiled with all the features and hooked on BMW! All day touring on this bike is very easily done. Going back to the FJR would be taking a step backwards.

Me too - I've got 10K miles on my '17. It's been so hot I've removed the windscreen, which makes it a completely different bike. I also purchased the Werks Quiet Ride for the colder weather - night and day over the stock shield.

Jeff Pinnow did you feel high frequency vibrations around 4000 rpm which makes wrist/fingers numb on your FJR? And after FJR how do constant boxer vibrations feel on RT?
@hfjeff2736
@hfjeff2736 4 жыл бұрын
@@byn1975 I found the FJR inline 4 incredibly powerful and smooth yet buzzy around 4000-4200 rpm's, which just happens to be interstate cruising rpm. My FJR was a 2011 so I had the 5-speed not the 6-speed, and no factory cruise which would have helped. My right thumb would go completely numb. The vibration on the RT is lower frequency and does not seem to bother. I also installed some Beemer Buddies/Grip Buddies www.originalbeemerbuddies.com/ . They not only provide some vibration isolation but also increase the grip circumference. For me it is a non-issue and I don't notice on all day rides. Hope this helps.

Funny, i talked to you on this day after the run about this R1200RT , I'm actually the rider on the 1st bike the K1600GT which is what I came purchase, pending road test. After being on the K1600GT it turns out that is a heavy bike and I was not tall enough so it was tippy toes at the red lights and was uncomfortable to try to support all that weight. I was actually glad when the ride was over so i could get off it. Then me and you talked a little bit about the two bikes (r1200rt and k1600gt) and your fjr1300 which was another bike i was looking at too. , Anyways turns out later that day after the rain let up a bit I rode the bike that you were on (R1200RT) came back to Euro Cycles of Tampa Bay and purchased a New R1200RT from the showroom. Your comments were very helpful, after riding the R1200RT that rides like a Cadillac I knew right then it was the bike for me. Got 500 miles on it now have an appointment on April 9,2016 for the first service.

I liked the RT a lot more than you did, so I bought one. The engine behaves behaves more and more smoothly as it gets broken in if my experience on the 1200GS carries through. I like the taller gearing on the RT as opposed to the GS, it's much better suited to touring.

Hi, I have owned 3 fjr 1300 bikes ,my last one a 2015 model.I thought I would never change until I tried an RT last year.The RT feels as light as a feather and the handling is far superior to any of my FJR's and for once,I did not have to fit an aftermarket screen to keep the wind off.I have say you are riding the RT all wrong,the bike does have a slipper clutch and the funny smell you mention is the slipper clutch working,preventing the rear wheel slipping out,keeping you safe.Back here in the uk,we are somewhat expert in riding in the rain which,I think qualifies me ,after 50 years of riding,to say the FJR is a great bike but put it on a wet twisty road in the UK and an RT on the same road,no contest,the RT is in a league of it's own....unbeatable!, trust me I have tried it. Ride Safe.

Great and informative review. I have a 2016 R1200RT and cannot disagree with your review. I did change the wind screen to a larger version and glad I did. I also noted the clutch is a bit touchy at the end of the release. I love the bike. Interesting, I was going to the the K1600RT but after talking to two Canadians who were in town (Houston); one had the R and the other the K, they suggested I stay with the R. Thanks Canada. Again great review and honest. Thanks.

Great ride and review Bryan. As my Pal Graham owns one, I can relate to a lot of what you said. I have ridden the R and found it nice, more top heavy than the FJR and as I was buying the K, I guess I didn't really like it fully. I was pleasantly surprised with the boxer engine's remarkable smoothness considering the configuration of the cylinders. Thanks for sharing.

I rode the RT and GT back to back at the weekend. The GT's engine is boss, but it needs more revs to get it going as it's over 100 lbs heavier than the RT. It also sounds wonderful too. But when trying to change lines in the twisties it felt like a lumbering hippo next to the RT which felt like it was on rails. If you stick to freeways the GT is a good choice. But if you want a great two-up bike that can still carve corners like a sporting bike, IMPO the RT is the best tourer bar none.
@KimMoonbmwmoonie
@KimMoonbmwmoonie 4 жыл бұрын
I have owned both. I now ride the GT...its very flickable, but you have to keep the revs up and trust that it wil hold the line once in it. Its a little unnerving at first...the only issue I have is i tend to run too hot into turns due to the power and have to brake hard to keep it under control. Once I figured that out, its a pleasure to runi nthe twisties. :)
@RichDunn
@RichDunn 4 жыл бұрын
@@KimMoonbmwmoonie Yes, that's the same for any heavy long-wheelbase bike, like my Rocket 3R for instance. If your line is true and you maintain a slow in and fast out approach, they appear to be flickable. But when you're carrying too much speed and get your line wrong, you'll pay the price in oversteer. And if they get truly out of control, it's a lot of weight to muscle about to control. A Street-Triple they are not! But that six is a masterpiece isn't it? I like the Gold Wing which sounds sportier, but the BMW is effortless and just so super smooth, even more so than the Honda. Enjoy the GT, it's a great bike!

@@ron_grimes It's super well-developed Ron and there's no better bikes through open sweeping bends, it just feels like a bullet-train. I'd like to see the TFT fitted from the R models, but otherwise it's pretty faultless.

Thanks for the review. Looked like you were in road mode at the beginning and the traction control warning light was coming on. Dynamic mode would have changed that. I purchased a 2014 new at the end of 2014 and just love the bike. Mine will show a digital speed readout when radio is off and that might just be a setting. I had mine loaded up with all the options and compared to my Harley this is a dream bike.

Excellent review! I have a R1200GS and I thought the gearbox is kind of clunky too when I first got it but the trick is pre-load the shifter. (Rather than clutch in then kick up/down) I know it's not as intuitive as some other bikes when you first jump on it but that's how you get smooth shifts on boxer engines. Try it next time!

Bought the 1250RT find the screen works very well in the rain kept me well dry. Nicely balanced slow speed and in the corners , auto blip is excellent except for gear 1 and 2 which demands clutch on up shift. The 1250 engine with shift cam is a step up in performance above 5000 revs which makes overtakes at pace more capable. Great sound with akro can fitted a bit vibe through the bars not sure if it would irritate on longer rides but up shift manages vibes a bit. Nice low twin growl , great cockpit ergonomics . Tempted by the k16 but while more smooth power might be just too heavy for every day short stop use but probably awesome for multi day long trips ....will see when we test the 2020 K16

I too find the neutral a bit tricky to find but only if I'm wearing stiff dual sport boots. You get used to it. And as for the medium-sized nuclear explosion when you kick the transmission to 1st gear... I LOVE IT! Lol. You know it it's in there! :)

Switched my 2015 K1600GTLe for a 2016 R1200rt this Spring. No looking back, love the stability (traction control in the rain) handling, so much lighter than the K - your feet still on the pegs at 1 mph speaks volumes! I found the K much more top heavy than the RT, especially with a full tank of gas!! In the tight twisties the RT feels much more flickable! (K w/o topcase and suspension set on sport vs R on normal) Btw my wife feels the same way riding pillion! Don't get me wrong, the K is still an awesome motorcycle! The power in intoxicating! BUT, power isn't everything, besides the RT has plenty enough power to get me into trouble! Vibration at idle reminds me of my past Norton Commandos, which I actually like. As far as smoothness, after a day's ride , I can't say I'm any less or more fatigued on either one. (Except if I was in the twisties where the RT wins out) I like the FJR, but it's a touch small for me and I feel it after a day's ride! RT no regrets!!!

Solid review! Lots of info. You’re so right about the rain which is why I prefer it to pour rather than just a light rain. Helps to wash everything away. Wash those oil “rainbows” off to the sides. Did you ever get feedback from BMW on the clutch slipping incident or strange smell? 4.5 stars on the review. I had to deduct .5 star cause I was expecting torque curve ratings on the bovines at the 10:15 mark. :)

Nice bike. No question about it. The only negative about the BMWs is the price tag loaded and also, you MUST get extended warranty. These bikes will run fantastic till something goes wrong and then go and visit the shop. Do not forget to bring the local ATM with you or an unused credit card. That is why I went with a new FJR. Perfect all around and for the price tag out the door.Happy riding.

Good "first ride impressions," Bryan. I've been trolling your posts for a few weeks (especially enjoyed your Skyline Drive/BRP/AutoTrain vLog). After spending about 8 years on Harleys, I made the jump back into the metric scene early last year. I was torn between the FJR and the R1200RT (as I am only 5'7", the K bikes were not appealing to me). My first impressions on the R1200 were quite different than your's. In fact, I wrote a check the minute I pulled back into the dealership's lot. This could have been the result of me being on HDs (and owning 6 HDs) over the previous years, but I would find it hard-pressed to call the R1200 anything but smooth. While the inlines do have a smoother idle, I like to feel my machine's pulses. After 4,000 miles, the only downside I can find with the BMW is the horrible dealer support network (few and far between) and the lack of online technical support (doesn't come close to the online support community that exists for the FJRs and HDs). The machine itself is a "winner" in my book.

Good review. I agree. I have been riding metric bikes for years including a couple of Kawa Concours 1000s. So I recently traded in a Triumph America 2004 and bought a 2008 R1200RT at Lejuene Motorsport in Jacksonville NC. I am also your height and feel a little awkward on the higher seat (set at lowest) but I can manage it with a little bit more attention to stops. So far I am very pleased with the performance. I don't like the placement of the mirrors so I bought on eBay a couple of handle bar grips mirrors to improve rear vision. For getting my leg over the seat, I step on the foot peg and mount it like a horse. The only BMW dealer near me is 100 miles away in Raleigh which is a pain but I guess I'll have to suck it up. Ride safe.

Great review. I don't know what it is like in other States but here in Oregon, and WA, for that matter, when you take a test/demo ride, your motorcycle insurance company probably covers you for liability, but NOT for damage. I chec. ked with a fair number of insurance companies - they all said the same thing - we don't insure anything that doesn't belong to the person looking for the coverage. No temp insurance ad-ons, nothing. And all the shops I have talked to have the rider sign a waiver making it clear the rider is responsible for any damage to the bike. For most folks that take a test/demo ride, that isn't a problem, because nothing happens. But for the few that have something happen it could be painful - like the fellow that had a tip over of an LT in the dealer's parking lot - $4,000 out of his pocket - ouch! Something to think about. The solution: as suggested by one shop, rent a bike, like from Eagle Rider or MotoQuest.

It seemed to be raining out when you were gunning it. My guess would be that traction control was kicking in. Slipper clutch allieviates engine braking on decel. Has nothing to do with accelerating.

yep. you guessed it.
@GaryMCurran
@GaryMCurran 8 жыл бұрын
Okay, that doesn't make sense, though. IF the traction control is kicking in, the revs would go DOWN, not up. The traction control is going to prevent the engine from revving as fast as it does, so the indications would be exactly opposite of what Bryan saw.
@GaryMCurran
@GaryMCurran 8 жыл бұрын
saddle8bag Okay, I can believe that. What I was thinking is that it cuts the ignition to one or more of the cylinders, which would reduce the power output, which would reduce the revs, but you're right, it may not reduce the engine speed, just the power output and torque.

It appears that the stock windscreen on the newer RTs is much poorer than my 2008 with deflecting water. I've never had a problem getting soaked by rain bouncing off the windscreen. Oh well - can't be perfect.

Great review! .... AS USUAL! .... thanks for your continued videos. Thinking about a new FJR 2016 or the RT 1200 RT .... any thoughts? As an 2013 FJR fan with 24K mi --- am thinking about the 2016 FJR and or the BMW R 1200RT ...... based on your review ..... am thinking that the FJR is still a winner.... particularly with the 16 enhancements! Bottom line, cobalt blue, 6th gear, slipper clutch, etc ..... I'm about ready to pull the trigger on the 16 FJR..... your thoughts? Thanks!

Any update on why the revs where climbing so quickly? Can it be the traction control? Surely there would be a light on the dash if the traction control was intervening.

The bike has traction control and stability control. It's idiot proof, hence you rev it up and nothing happens if the tire would lose traction or slide.

I’ve owned a number of sport touring bikes and I have to say this bike is the easiest bike to ride….Goldwing’s are nice, and I’ve owned two Golding, HD Ultra’s, but this RT is the best touring bike by far. 👍. Also owned FJR and Triumph Sprint back in the day, but I am in my third RT. It the traction control is the reason it won’t accelerate as fast as the RPM…protecting you !

Road the 2017 version, no real issues. Have more options than anyone could ever need. Just couldn't handle the $23,000 price tag. Purchased a Yamaha FJR 1300 and saved $7000 in the price for the 3 letters. Still favor the inline 4 vs opposed 2 cylinder boxer.

Fair review except for the comments about the windshield. Windshields are not rain gear, and IMO are not primarily designed to keep rain off the rider. If the rider wants to stay dry then rain gear or a car is the only real option. I own a 2016 R1200RS ... it would be interesting to hear your review comments on that bike. :)

Thanks BMW, i know one day you'll completely pull your heads off your lower back and start to see the light(less German, simple engineering and even simpler service procedures).

diesel and gas, car or truck are held to the EPA laws it's just that those, mostly young males, in large diesel trucks love to remove all that EPA emissions stuff for more power and smoke. any cop who cared could easily write them up. On the flip side there are plenty of people who do the same with their gas, removing emissions components for more power and while it may or may not do as much damage to the environment it's not noticed by most since it doesn't produce a black soot cloud.

Bryan, thoroughly enjoyed the R1200RT review, as well as the K1600GT review. Look for a video of Police Rodeo on the R1200RT-P. There's one guy there who does a 'Slow Race', took him 90-some seconds to complete the course, and it was a very short course! :p Next, check out National Cycle, and the VStream windshields for the BMW line. While not inexpensive, you should be able to get a taller replacement screen for the RT, at only $230. www.nationalcycle.com/vehicles/motorcycle-1/bmw/bmwr1200rt/2016bmwr1200rt/z2351.html I really and truly wish BMW would bring back the K1200 or K1300GT bikes. Four cylinders, a little smaller, a little lighters, and easier for the more vertically challenged among us. Not all of us are 6'2"! I would love to see it in the same style as the K1600, but just a couple of percentage points smaller. By the way, I hope that your health is returning to where it should be, you look active and sound good, so I must assume it is.

"Hey whoa, what is that? That's weird, what is that?" It's traction control. It's normal, he's riding in the rain and hitting the throttle. The bike is in "Rain mode." Apparently obvious facts and the riding environment didn't trigger the "brain housing group." Which is why reviews from people that's aren't familiar with the features aren't really helpful. Comically amateurish.

Cheesy low tech contrast FJR dash? Wow, such an insult to a stylish and well designed piece of tech. At 21min you offer to check the suspension settings - I look at the dash and see huge RT logo and mentioned things on the side so small i can't read. Well done BMW. With FJR you look at the dash and know everything you need to know at a 1ms time. Pretty nice review tho, well done.

There isnt anything wrong with the clutch at all bro. These bikes are equipped with a "slipper clutch" or back torque limiter. The TC brain is recognizing the possibility of "clatter" to the rear wheel by either hard acceleration or deceleration and is slipping the clutch for you for a more predictable ride. Was this bike equipped with the shift assist pro i.e. clutch less up and down after away from a start? not something I use but wanted your thoughts on it. Source: me. +Jake Stringfellow ah thanks for the insight on the slipper. I have never had a slipper engage on anything but a downshift. The dealer had no idea why it was doing that! Yes it did have the quick shifter they just didn't tell me before the ride so I didn't know until after. Assuming it was the same as their other models like the xr I reviewed I would love it.

Slipper clutches only slip on deceleration to avoid wheel lock up, not while accelerating. The new RTs are also a wet clutch, so no smell would be apparent. There's bikes also have traction control, so no way you were spinning the wheel.
