Hyundai's All-New Sonata Plug-In Hybrid is the real deal with 93MPGe and 24 miles of pure EV range. Ron Doron reviews the latest mileage miser just in time as gas prices hit $4.00 per gallon in California.

Lifetime battery warranty is what sells me! Definitely better looking than the Accord hybrid & a better value. Doesn't have that old fart driver look to it like the Accord either. And no CVT to worry about down the road.

This makes the trunk space on the Fusion Energi look pretty ridiculous in comparison.

drove one to san fransico and i really like it. great on gas drove from san diego and had a quarter tank left. I have a kia optima 2013 and now wished i got the hybrid.

Love the smart battery configuration giving more usable space in the trunk. Lifetime battery warranty is another big plus. This is all good as Hyundai needs something to offset the downside of this car: Styling is nice, on par with the Accord, not as nice as the Fusion. Interior is adequate but again a bit behind the Honda and Ford. Relying on "standard" tech (6 sp tranny, Toyota-like hybrid) dings its mileage numbers. Like others have said, it all comes down to price.

What about cabin heat in the Winter and A/C in the Summer performance. The engine does not run all of the time.

Does anyone know when the hybrid will be available

Accord has a plug in hybrid as well. Better looking in my opinion.

Electric cars will be pretty neat when the get like 300 miles of range on one charge and when they can be charged within a half an hour or less period. As of now they just take to long to charge and you can't go very far. Beginning stages of a great idea
@NowAndThenEH89JW9 жыл бұрын
Kenny M I think Tesla does that already. Power charge might take an hour

Nice review. Your chart at the end has a few errors. Spelling Analysis wrong & the equation should read 1050 miles / (not x) 28 miles/gallon x $4.00/gallon = $150 So based on your figures, compared with the Sonata ECO you have a monthly cost of approx. $131/month - (Sonata Plug in monthly cost) $60 = $71 savings per month or $852 annual savings. Compared with the regular Sonata Hybrid you have a monthly cost of approx. $100 - (Sonata Plug in monthly cost) $60 = $40 savings per month or $480 annual savings. Initial payback on the purchase price is what kills the plug in and turns off most buyers. On the ECO (est $23,000) I estimate at least an $11,000 dollar difference (plug in estimate shooting low @ $34,000) so if you do the math based on annual plug in hybrid savings that would take you...$11,000 difference / $852 annual savings = 12.91 years to break even. Hardly worth it! Even with government discounts you’re talking a long time to break even. Compared to the regular Sonata hybrid (approx. $26,000) so if you do the math based on annual plug in hybrid savings that would take you...$8,000 difference / $480 annual savings = 16.66 years to break even. The regular hybrid is a much better short & long term value compared to the plug in. Now if we compare the Sonata hybrid versus the Sonata ECO the difference between those two cars there is approx. a $31 dollar savings per month or a $372 annual savings. With a $3000 difference in purchase price, the payback is approx. 8 years. However, when Hyundai offers a hybrid rebate that brings the price down to that closer to the ECO, it is worth purchasing in my opinion. Got to wait for the deals!

Glenn Did you account for Fed/State tax credits/rebates? That would take off another $5500 or so off the price of the plug-in. Plus, the feeling of only having to visit a gas station a few times a year is kind of nice (if you can cover 70% of your miles in EV mode).

ELECTRICITY IS NOT FREE. Prius == $1.90 gasoline for 50 miles. PLUGIN HYBRID == $2.22 for the same range (at 13c/KWh). So the plugin cars actually cost MORE to run
@electrictroy20108 жыл бұрын
Also after the Sonata battery drains empty, it is only averaging 42 mpg in pure gas mode (example: driving LA to Vegas or SanFran). The Prius will average 50mpg and therefore still be the cheaper car. AND the Prius (or any standard gasoline/diesel car) costs 5,000 dollars less to buy than Sonata plugin. These are the basic facts which car reviewers of plugins never, ever mention to their audience .

How did you get these numbers? I think your calculation is off.

Not sure about the most recent Prius but the Sonata is a much more comfortable.

Considering the Sonata qualifies for a $4,919 federal tax rebate, and a possible state rebate (in CA, it's $1,500), and a possible utility rebate (my utility offers a $500 rebate), your argument is off.

FIRST, gas where I live is at $3 per gallon. The average hybrid using an entire tank of gas with both in-town and freeway driving (and not hypermiling) gets about 40mpg; that's 7.5 cents/mile (300 cents/40 miles=7.5 cents/mile). SECOND, if you have solar panels on your house, most of your juice can be generated by the sun. But since most people don't, we'll go with PG&E's EV rate plan. From 11pm-7am, our rate is 12.5 cents/KWh. Our Sonata is scheduled to only charge from 11pm-7am nightly and only requires around 8 KWw when the EV portion is depleted. So filling it up only costs us $1.00 (.125x8=1.00). Since we only get about 30 miles out of that 8KWh that equals out to 3.33 cents/mile (100 cents/30=3.33 cents/mile). THIRD, the Sonata Plug-In Hybrid is a Midsize Sedan in the same class as the Honda Accord and the Toyota Camry; a completely separate class than the prius. Oh, and even at $1.90/gallon and averaging 50mpg (hypermiling), you'll still spend more per mile than the Sonata PHEV. "Facts Don't Care About Your Feelings" -Ben Shapiro

Pinkpolo85 For what it's worth, this new styling is superior to the previous gen which, in time, will look as dated as a '98 Taurus. upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/6/61/1998-99_Ford_Taurus.jpg
