Dealer inspection reveals the belt tensioner in this 2.5L is leaking hydraulic fluid. They can fix it for $480, but we need a solution that is less expensive. Follow along as we attempt to fix it ourselves.

I finally attempted this today and thanks for this video it all went well. Thanks again. I didn’t use the pipe but used a long 17” wrench with the bend and pulled hard on it and removed and installed a new Mazda serpentine belt and tensioner. Saved myself $300 that’s a shop price that I was quoted.

Thanks for the video, I will attempt this. First time I had this changed the dealer charged me $162 for install because I already had the tensioner but wasn’t oem. The bearing was bad , now the tensioner is ripped half way on top, so ima try to do it myself and save some money. Thanks again.

Thanks for the video. I love rock auto stuff. I'm at 62k mi/6 yrs on my '16awd and no noises, but it is probably time to get a new belt/tensioner before a "big" surprise happens. Then it's on to f/r diff services/fluid.

My tensioner went bad, and the knuckle at the bottom of the dampener is scraping against the tensioner pulley. I'm not sure how that is happening unless the knuckle bolt is worn down enough for the lower part of the dampener to drop down.

Was there any rattling noise? Mine is making a noise and it seems eaither it or the water pump. It happens when it is first started, but after a minute or two of warm up it goes away, I can say it is not the engine.

No, rattling was not a symptom.

Ok, realizing the top is a NUT, not a bolt makes better sense on getting it back in easier.

How is the Gates brand holding up? I found your video online and its very helpful and I'm considering going with this brand vs OEM but not sure. Let me know if you can how you like the parts.

hi i have no clue why this little thing is leaking oil... i have a 2.2D engine and had already changed once, the new one has been leaking again for a while. turns out this seems like a common problem for mazda cars

I'm at 149k miles and my belt just went out. Do you recommend replacing the belt tensioner as well? Thanks for the video by the way, this is a great tutorial for knuckleheads like me.

If I had to replace the belt, I'd definitely replace the tensioner at the same time.

Would it make sense to change out the water pump belt while you've got the tensioner off or does it make a difference? I have a leaking tensioner and I plan to replace the serpentine belt but wondering if having the serpentine belt removed would make changing out the water pump belt easier.

The sepentine has to be removed first to get to the pump belt

Just did this repair and changed the water pump belt since I was in there. Super easy to do. My belt looked ok but had 100k miles on it. Felt better about just changing it out while I was in there.

Curious if a belt tensioner could use a spring instead of hydraulics. Much cheaper & lasts forever.

How do did you find it was bad ? Thanks
@PetesProjects0

Fluid leaks out of the tensioner and makes it look very black and greasy. When I point at it in the car at the beginning of the video it looks like it's covered with a black oily residue. That is how you tell.
