Review of the new 2016 30kwh Nissan Leaf - A surprisingly good vehicle

Thanks. Great review. Oh apart from the bit where I had the volume way up to hear you inside the car and then had my ears blown off when you were outside!! : ) Petrol won't go up again now. It's the end of the road for oil as far as road transport is concerned. We will be at 2% Plug-in UK sales this year (2016) and I reckon 20% or more by 2020. Sounds crazy but you just wait. Over the next 3-4 years rapid chargers will spring up everywhere and I mean everywhere. You are spot on about 200-250 miles and 20 grand. That's coming in the next two years. The only thing stopping me is the range as I regularly do 110 miles in one journey. The 60kWh Leaf that's coming will solve this. There is going to be a massive paradigm shift to electric and only a few have seen it coming. Hold on tight, it's going to be mental.

"50Kwh charger". I love how even people reviewing EV's get confused between Kw and Kwh. :) Kw is a measure of power output Kwh is a measure of electrical storage (battery) capacity. In context this Leaf has a 30Kwh battery with an 80Kw motor and can be charged with a 50Kw charger.

For someone who is deeply sceptical about electric cars in general, I have to say you really made me re-think my ideas spence22. Excellent coverage and totally drew me in to think of it as a possibility. Especially from a self confessed petrolhead..interesting and informative stuff.

Great little review, nicely put for a complete EV novice - we need more like this to encourage petrol and diesel drivers to switch. Everyone who rides in my wife's Leaf talks about how quiet, smooth and quick it is - they are all genuinely surprised! Small note regarding units used though - You charge at up to 50kW, not 50kWh on an EcoTricity rapid. The orange cable you showed in the boot is for charging between 3.3kW and 6.6kW depending on charge point and charger fitted in the car, not kWh. Simply put, kW is a rate of charge, kWh is an amount of charge - units matter ;-) Pedantic I know, sorry... ;-)

Today, we turned in our 2013 leased Leaf for a new leased Leaf. Even though we picked up a lot of extra features, our monthly lease went down $50. The government incentives are good, but even though we live in a state with the lowest gasoline prices in the country, we still love not stopping at a gas station and love the size, drive, and sense this car provides. We are addicted to this car and you did a nice job showing why!

I have a 2017 30kwh one. Damn fine very enjoyable car which is super easy to live with as a daily driver for our family with 2 kids. Never regretted it one bit and could never go back to an engine car. We charge ours from one of the garage sockets a few hours most nights. Electricity cost has been so low as to not even consider it and it works out the equivalent of 120mpg so better than a scooter.

Had one since January, had a first generation leaf before, my new 30kwh can easily get 125 miles, possible 150 if weather and route ideal. It is a great improvement over my old 24kwh. If you get one remember it does take longer to charge, on the brick it seems to charge at 2kw my old one was mor like 2.5kw.

Best EV review on KZfaq. Its the little things like seeing its 3 pin domestic charger means I now know I can take it home and charge it straight after buying it. Also means I could carry an emergency suitcase Genny for trips that are perhaps too anxcious but may have charge points. High amperage may rule out campsites but thats extreme use I guess. Ideal for commuting and local shopping trips.

Great review. Just a question. Are the 3.3kwh and 6.6kwh rates a feature of the car, the cable or both? And do you need a fast charger for the 6.6kwh? What's the relationship between the 3.3kwh/6.6kwh options and the standard/fast charger options? I hope I've made the question(s) understandable.
@spence226 жыл бұрын
As far as I'm aware, the vehicle is either a 3.3 or 6.6 kwh equipped vehicle. Also i believe, you need the 6.6kwh able to charge at that rate. If I'm incorrect, I'm sure i'll be made aware! Obviously things have moved on since with the introduction of the MK2 Leaf.

You have a new sub. I myself have a Nissan Micra. I tend to fill it with £20 then another £25 when the petrol goes mid into the red. That equates to a full tank pretty much for £45, which gives me approx 300-360 miles of range total. Really wanting an EV though. Have to see what Tesla announce on the Model 3 come March 21st :)
@spence228 жыл бұрын
+iKaGe01 Yup the price point on the Tesla 3 will most likely determine where Leaf & other current EVs go price-wise.
@iKaGe018 жыл бұрын
+spence22 I know I want a new car but not honestly sure price wise as yet, an EV is worth it. My car cost £1200 and has been going strong for 5 years now with only 30,000 miles on the clock and in the 5 years I have filled approx £2,500 worth of petrol in it. So I know I really want an EV as it is cheap performance for the price (Tesla for example) but it is the weighing up of pros and cons considering how many miles I do
@1100HondaCB8 жыл бұрын
I mainly do short journeys so this Leaf would be ideal for me. Use it for a few day and charge it up over night and then use it again for a few days for local trips. I only do about 7 miles a day to my place of work and back which is why I use a 125cc Honda motorbike that does well over 100mpg. So a car like this would suit me fine.

For me only problem is still range anxiety. Even if you use Leaf with leafbox (range extender) and 30 kWh battery, you can drive 220 km or so. This is far to short range comparing to any Tesla (ANY!) and Bolt/Ampera-E or new ZOE. Nissan should focus on changing batteries to 40 and 60 as standard, not 24 and 30. Otherwise - it will soon disappear from market.

Haha I could do without the Northern Soul album! How much does one of these cost? The whole renting or buying of batteries option seems like another opportunity for consumers to get ripped off.
@spence228 жыл бұрын
It seems that the best option is to lease. With a relatively small deposit & with Nissan giving these a firm shove, £100 per month is fairly easily achievable over 24 months. I was blown away by how well they drive having had pretty low expectations. If I was buying outright, I definitely wouldn't lease the battery pack as it would be pretty off-putting to prospective buyers when I came to sell..
@benpaynter8 жыл бұрын
+sjb2015 Depreciation is a problem because the newer models are making big steps each time they're released which pushes down resale value of older cars. Plus people don't want second hand batteries as they're not sure how long they'll last and they have a slightly reduced range. So that's something to bear in mind if you're going to purchase a leaf. The best ownership model at the moment is leasing the car as opposed to just the battery as you don't need to worry about the depreciation or fronting up lots of cash. You can lease 30kwh leaf's for 2-3 years for about 220-230 a month with 3 months down payment at the moment on personal rather than commercial leases. If you do an average amount of mileage then half of that cost can be offset with fuel and road tax savings so it presents a very attractive package. A guy who owns one and has some videos on KZfaq said that he was speaking to someone in Nissan, I'm not sure of the location, and they'd said that 19 of the last 20 Leaf's they'd shifted were being leased as opposed to purchased.

@AndrewGoodladIchorus8 жыл бұрын
+Aleksandr Vysockij Elon Musk has said " £30,000 or less" Direct US Dollar Conversion plus tax brings it to £28000. The Model S is actually less here than USD conversion and tax as it is pieced together in Europe. I wouldn't be surprised if Supercharging is extra. So yeah £30,000 would get you 200+ miles and supercharging probably.

Here is a thought getting off fossil fuels and having cleaner air especially in cities is the goal. So Paris is banning Diesels in 2020 with that said why are people worried about mileage range. The Prius Prime will give you 25 miles electric combine that with solar panels on your home. We could have clean air in cities!

Nice review. But please... This car does NOT have an engine, it has a motor. Also, that machine you use to charge the car is a charger, not a pump. You petrolhead! ;)
@spence228 жыл бұрын
Lol! Yes you're correct...Complicated this electricity stuff isn't it! 🤓
@cros138 жыл бұрын
+spence22 Also, I'm afraid what you pointed out as the motor isn't the motor. Nissan stacked up the motor, inverter and charger into a single unit so the machine at the factory could lift the whole unit in the same as an ICE motor. The motor is about the size of a medium can of paint and on the bottom of the stack.
@AndyMatrix8 жыл бұрын
the battery should be 42kwh. then we talk. How about electric cars world with a roof rack with extra 12 kwh battery pack ? if you do not need you take off and use inside the house, charged by solar panels

The Opel Ampera-e and the Tesla model iii will make this car obsolete in a few months. Great effort by Nissan, but those cars will come with battery packs that have twice the capacity and a lot more power. The Opel has already been rated by the EPA at 237 miles of range or 380 kms. That is in real world use, the unrealistic nedc figure will probably exceed 300 miles or 500 kms. So, if you can get a car with twice the range and a lot more power for about the same price as the leaf, who's going to buy this one? As for my usage, I would probably use a car like these for a 160 km - 100 mile round trip commute driving at a steady 140 kph on the motorway. The Nissan leaf would not be able to make it, whereas the other two certainly would. Nissan needs to come out with a50- 60 kwh Leaf fairly quickly or they'll lose their market-leading position by early next year.
@tulkooo7 жыл бұрын
but Leaf is already 5 years old... so it made its pride in those years, of course it's time there is something better after 5-6 yearsNissan is buiding a better Leaf as well which should provide 200 miles of range and rumors are that it might provide even 300+ range

@spence228 жыл бұрын

@colinphillipson48308 жыл бұрын
+Chet Koczynski This is a UK reviewer. Nissan UK quotes 155 miles by using the 'stupid' European NEDC (New European Driving Cycle) tests. Nissan America quote the EPA test with a more realistic 107 miles. Hopefully since the VW scandal the NEDC will revise their indoor computer estimated unrealistic every day results.
