actually, the plug charge from a normal socket is only 20 hours from 0% to 100%, from 0% to 80% it is closer to 12 hours. most drivers won't come home almost completely dead they would have like 40% left, meaning plug in charge would be something like 8 hours which is absolutely overnight-able.

best part about ev, you dont have to wait till the oil temp reaches 160f to go full throttle, you just go in a ev with no oil needed to warmup..

Leased this car for 2 yrs. Great car for commuting to work and getting around town like he said. Really enjoyed driving it and it's quicker than you think. I think it can get up to 60 way faster than 9 seconds off when not using eco mode; I could usually leave cars in the dust when the light turned green. Pretty room in the front and back. The Bose speakers are great. Heated steering wheel!

I just bought a used Leaf for $8000 (35k miles on the vehicle). The battery has degraded some, and is only good for ~70 miles now, but for my needs it's fine. What a deal! Even after buying and installing an L2 charger, I've entered the world of real electric motoring for under $10 grand.

The longer and slower the charge the better the batteries will perform and last.

Quick charge is standard on SV and SL now, at least on later years 2013 and on. The "trickle charge" or 110v is fine for everyday. Typically a half charge top off, overnight say 8 hours, is fine..

Most Leaf owners charge at 110/120V. At that rate it will put up to 5 miles per hour back on the battery so if your daily commute is 40-45 miles then you can top off your battery overnight. If you are driving 60-70+ miles per day 5 days/week then this car will may not fit your lifestyle unless you get the upgraded charger (EVSE). A 220/240V charger will put up to 10 miles per hour on the battery.

On December 26, 2016, I purchased a used 2014 Nissan Leaf for $7,000. It had about 24,100 miles on it and still had all 12 bars. For that kind of money I feel I got a bargain of a deal and the car covers all my daily driving needs. If you can I recommend this car for your local driving needs. Yes it even does good in the winter because it is front wheel drive and low to the ground.

20 hours?? Even if my leaf was 100% discharged (which never happens) it takes 14 hours on 110v.

When you tried to start the engine, you had to say “put your foot on the brake, then push this button to start the electronics”, not the engine because this car has a battery, not an engine.

I get well over 100 miles per full charge. 5 miles per kWh out of battery. A fully charged battery holds 21-22 kWh of power.

A few more details would really help consumers decide...how long the charger cord is, does it really take 20 hours to trickle charge (most reviews say 8 hours), how the brakes function (fast stop, regular stop, with or without regenerative braking), whether or not and how this vehicle handles in snowy/icy conditions, whether the hard interior rattles (very annoying in an ultra quiet vehicle).

In a couple of years when I get my Sentra paid down, i'm getting one of these or maybe a Bolt, since those will drop in price on the used market enough for me to afford one by then.

I've owned and driven a 2014 Leaf for the past year. Some points: 1. Trickle Charging: The video (and general advice from Nissan) suggest it is "only for emergencies". I have been using trickle-charging as my primary means of charging my Leaf (and my only means at home) for the past year, and it has been entirely sufficient. My round-trip commute is 44 miles every week day. Trickle-charging gets me ~5 miles per hour of charging, so I'd only need to charge for about 9-10 hours per night to accommodate the 45-50% of battery use needed for one roundtrip commute. So plugging in when I get home (say, 6 pm) is more than enough to get me back up to 100% by the time I leave the next morning at 6:30 am. I do have the option to charge for free at work, and I do usually take advantage of that. But when I am out of town on travel my wife drives the leaf (with a similar distance commute), and she can't charge at work, and trickle-charging at home has always been sufficient to get her to 100% by the next morning. (And for us it is not really even necessary to charge to 100%.) If anyone is holding back on a Leaf because they don't want to have to buy/install a level 2 (240V) charging station, realize that it is probably not necessary for you if your commute is of similar length as ours. 2. I have the base "S" trim so I don't have the bigger infotainment system or the "Carwings" functionality. The video says several times that the system is "important for a car like the leaf". No it isn't. Any smartphone nowadays has apps that are far superior to what this system brings to the table, and for a cost far lower. I plug my iPhone into the USB connector and have a CD-slot-mounted phone mount. The free PlugShare app gives you a map of all available charging stations, whether they are operational or not, and whether they charge a fee for use or not. And the navigation options on your smartphone (Google Maps, Apple Maps, Waze, etc.) are superior to what's in the higher trim Leaf models. Skip the infotainment, get the base S trim, and save several thousand $.

I live in SriLanka and bought Nissan Leaf Second Generation Car 2014 which was brought down from UK. I have 220/240V 10A 50Hz (Input and Output) Charger. Model no: 29690 3NA3B. My home is equipped with 30Amp. 220/240 V Single phase Electricity system which is Supplied from the National Grid. Also I have 8 Kw Ongrid Inverter coupled with 24 PV modules. Basically I Do Not pay any money if I am to charge the Car at home. I believe what I have is a Level 2 Slow charger and I am interested to know and purchase a Rapid/Quick Charger which can be plugged to a 30 Amp Power supply similar unit any part of the Country, which has to be a Portable/Carry On type. Any ideas or suggestions please! Thank You.

If you are driving 60-70 miles a day then it would be good to have the level 2 (220V) setup but if you are only driving 30-40 miles then you can charge it overnight with the 110V.

In December 2016 the Leaf still is the same , the next Leaf still has yet to be officially announced...maybe 2017 or 2018

Ummm, Leaf starts at $5,000 less than Volt. Leaf is ALL electric, Volt has electric and I.C.E. Leaf is a hatchback, Volt is a sedan. These have similarities but are not direct rivals.

How is the maintenance of the Leaf looking for a high school car that's an old EV so I don't have to spend gas.

The "20 hour charge" never really happens. Do you pull up at home every day in your gas car with the fuel gauge reading zero? Of course not. you don't in a LEAF either. I have a 30 mile round trip commute. Maybe I drive 5 miles at lunch and 10 miles extra after I get home. That uses just over half the charge. When i pull in the driveway I plug in the trickle charger and the car is essentially derivable at any time. On days where I have to do extra driving for work I stop and catch a quick charge. Again, I'm planning ahead so I'm not on zero charge and I only get enough from the quick charger to get me where I'm going. A typical quick charge for me might be 10-15 minutes. Range and charging times may sound like steep bariers, but really for most people they are not. Good review otherwise.

The Buffalo electric co. in Buffalo NY made electric car's. 109 year's ago (1906) one went from Jersey city to Philly on a single charge! (12 mph) 100 mile's! ONLY 85 mile's out of a leaf?

MPGe is better the higher the number just like with MPG. It's a way to compare electric vehicles to non-electric.

I can charge mine on a 110v outlet no problem. You come over, plug it in and 10 hours later you got 90%. Nobody's driving their Leaf to 0%

Still waiting for electric cars to improve even more before I step behind the wheel of one. Interesting idea, but I don't think I'd really want to drive one of these right now. When they can go a couple hundred miles on a single charge, then I'll be interested (my CRX comes pretty close on a single tank).

Good review but 2 big errors. Higher mpge is better. Guy said lower is better,! 125 mpge means that because electric is more efficient at converting energy into motion. An amazing 125 miles per energy in 1 gallon of gasoline. Also never mentioned that elec is much cheaper per mile than gasolune. Yuo cant charge quicker at 240v 13 amp unless battery is tiny. Bu u want a big battery for more range. leaf is 24kwhr battery capacity. You need to be putting in the power of a 3kw kettle for 8 hours for a full charge. Tesla model s is 70 and 85kwh. Simple physics. So would take 3 to 3.5x longer. Tesla supercharger that takes 30 mins for 80% is 400v at about 350 amps! But on a stndard household outlet would take 2 days... so need a fast charger. But if u only drive 50 miles a day overnight household is fine. Then just top up

until electricity is 100% derived from non polluting sources,stuff like plants more trees, saves the earth, are an overstatement.

Hi Sofyan, I really enjoy the channel and find the cars you are reviewing to be interesting. My only gripe is that your presentation seems to be overly scripted. It seems as if you wrote this review for a magazine article, and then are reading it out loud to us watching the video. While the information is great, it loses that personal touch. This is also obvious since you seem to look away from the camera to a static angle where you might have notes or something. My advice is to know the high level points of the car and discuss them naturally. Looking forward to more videos!

My biggest issue is what happens after 5 years. No one will buy a used electric car because of the cost of batteries and the change in technology. A VW tdi will have a much lower cost to own and performance in the long run.

Great review. "Interesting" car. Yeah...You couldn't pay me to drive one of these things(which is funny, because they actually do with tax rebates. At least they used to.) In my area, there is one certain demographic that's buying these. Anyone else notice that in their area?

Someday, when electric has become more mainstream they are going to look back at videos and laugh, "needs to charge faster at 240v", not how that works, if you are supplying 16, 32 or 40a at 240v that determines the maximum available electricity, the power available in one hour are 3.84kWH, 7.62kWH & 9.6kWH respectively. At ~85% efficiency that is 3.3, 6.5 & 8.16 kW per hour, 24 kWh battery in the leaf will take 3 hours with a 240v 40a charger (if the car allows that level of flow, then a bit longer to "top off" as charging slows over 90%) and for many home owners with 100a service, they had best not be running the AC, electric dryer all at the same time so i don't think many people would go for a 50a charge system, when simple, inexpensive 16a systems would get the job done just fine in 8 hours overnight. They other way to look at it is, if you travel 50 miles per day and you are getting 4 miles per kW (most EVs are in the 3.5-4 range) you'll need to REPLENISH 12.5 kW @ 85% efficiency you would be drawing 14.4 kW from the outlet which would require 3.75hrs @ 16a, 2.5hrs @ 24a, 1.8hrs @ 32a & 1.5hrs @ 40a. Even driving in a track day like very aggressive manner earning 3 miles per kW, a 16a 240v charging session would have you back to do it all again in less than six hours, not bad at all on a 240v 20a circuit!
