PLEASE start monitoring temps during your testing. Oil temp, trans temp, and coolant temp are far more important to know than if it gets 3 mpg or 3.2 mpg. More important than how long it takes to go up a hill at a specific speed (which is kinda silly because you're always shooting for a given speed therefore negating any time difference)

Anyone notice that they criticized the ram for squatting 2" and its max weight but they didn't seem to care that the ford squatted 3" and they wound up passing it's max weight with the 9000 pound trailer. Despite that and the ford doing a much slower time and being a more expensive truck it still got a better score...

Taking points off for the shifter is pretty lame IMO. I have a 2014 Ram with the 8- speed and while I didn't like it at first, it has completely won me over. Honestly, it works flawlessly, it is simple to use, and the best part is it doesn't take up any unnecessary space. I used to hate all the wasted space by those on-the-consle shifters were. All my buddies are jealous of my truck simply because it has a dial for a shifter. I love it, one of my favorite parts about the truck.

This video convinced me to buy a ram. Got a 2017 bighorn crew 4x4 but settled with the 3.21 because I rarely tow and would more appreciate better mpg. Love the hemi!

I just bought my second Ram. I owned the last one last 11 yrs and it was outstanding! I traded for a 17 Express Quad cab 4X4. My last Ram was an 07 SLT shorty 2 wheel drive with a 4.7 and the 545RFE and it was a towing mofo. I could haul my old 22 foot Maxim bow rider 70 mph and still knock off 17 mpg all day. These guys are right about the 8 speed transmission. It upshifts great but transmission braking is useless even empty. during braking the brake pedal requires far more foot pressure than my old truck (which basically had the same exact brakes) but just doesn't stop as nicely as my old truck.

Ok, to address a bunch of things in the comments. First, the coils and the squat.. They could have gotten a model with the air suspension, problem solved.. I mean really, the trick havd pretty much every other option anyway. Or, like I did, a pair of air lift 1000 airbags tucked into the rear coils.. No more squat, yet I still get a big sedan ride when not hauling. The 3mpg.. Yeah, that was towing up a mountain with 9,000lbs behind it.. How do people equate this to "it gets bad gas mileage"? My '14 ram hemi crew cab 4wd gets 20-22 to/from work (mostly highway), 17-19 around town, and 13-15 while towing my 22' boat (5,500lbs). "The engine will be shot after being at 5,000rpm under a load for 8 minutes". B.S. Ever been in a boat? I/O boat engines (which are basically car engines stuck in a boat) are always operating as if they're towing up a mountain, and they usually outlast the boat if maintained. "Chrysler transmissions are junk" and "it shifts too much". it's a ZF 8spd, look it up, proven, reliable, and cutting edge, it's designed to shift that much, the shifts are insanely quick which reduces heat buildup and the convertor stays locked... this isn't an old 1990s 4 speed auto. "The puck shifter sucks". Maybe you don't like it, but it frees up console space (I regularly have 6 people in my crew cab ram), and why have a great new totally electronic transmission and then make a fake mechanical/column shifter operating a switch just for a few whiners? And then there is the good old "it doesn't have this, it doesn't have that, Chrysler sucks, etc". Compare pricing versus comparable trucks, seriously, do it.. I bought a '14 Ram Express package 1500 Crew Cab hemi 4wd 3.92 with all the tow options, it looks like a Ram sport new in 2015 for $10k off the sticker in about 30 minutes of negotiating and ended up driving it home for $32k.. Ford and GM pricing wasn't even comparable for a similarly equipped truck. Don't be fooled by consumer reports and other industry funded reviewers, every vehicle made these days is going to have it's goofy issues, the majority of which are infotainment glitches or little electrical quirks.. at the end of the day, buy the truck you want based on it's looks, price, and capability, and if you're the kind of person that loses sleep at night over worrying about anything breaking, buy the extended warranty.

I wish you had this point system when you tested the15 ecoboost. I has a 15 2.7 and I absolutely love it. I'd have never believe a motor of that size could propel at vehicle that size like it dose. It's awesome!!! I'm interested to see how it would do against the others.

I know you guys always like to test the most capable set up, but I would be really interested in seeing how the 3.21 rear axle ratio with the 8 speed compares to the 3.92 with the 8 speed. I would love to see a head to head comparison.

I just got a 2016 and I love it 27-32 on hwy and 12-19 on city with the 3:21rear. It has great power and it rides smooth. It's a big horn with all the goodies inside. Awesome buy got it during truck month with 11000 off plus a trade in. Long story short got it for 31,340 and payment mid 400 can't beat that.

My Laramie RAM has the "Hocky Puck" gear changer. I was used to the old style shifting on the steering column. I said to myself "I can get used to this...." I love it now. Ford has the console shifting lever such as my wife's Dodge Durango. I prefer the console shiftier. I like to swing my right hand over the console and not hit the shiftier. The 2019 Dodge RAM trucks are going to be the dream luxury trucks now they are offering air suspension ride with adaptive cruise control and bird-eye view around the vehicle.

I'd like to see this run with the New RAM 2019 model.

Really don't get the hate for the gear selector. Never have had an issue with mine. It cleans up the interior by not having a column shifter that gets in the way of things, and instead of having a console shifter, you get useable storage space that comes in extremely handy if you've got a RAM equipped with the center console. I do think some paddle shifters or something would be more useful than the (+) or (-) buttons on the steering wheel though. Those buttons are tiny.

They've gotta be pretty close to max payload. Two 200 lb guys, their stuff, cameras, etc, and a 900 lb tongue weight. In my '17 Crew 6'4" 5.7 my payload cap is 1450 lb.

What was the tongue weight of that trailer? I’m having issues with towing a 7000 lb travel trailer with a 800 lb tongue weight with my similar equipped Ram. My towing capacity is 10130 but payload is only 1313 lb.

Love the ram 1500 5.7! Very durable and strong engine! Transmission is very bad I will say if you are beating on it, and not treating it properly, that is with every truck! And car! I absolutely love my ram 1500 it’s lifted 4 inch suspension with 35x12.5 tires, it’s awesome unfortunately transmission did go out but, I was beating it lol

I spent $95 for some airbags for mine. Deflate them to 5-10 psi for everyday driving. Inflate them to 30 psi when towing my 26 ft boat. Squat went from 2 inches to less than .5 inch. Install took about an hour in my garage. Feels very stable with plenty of power.

It's all about that zf German design 8 speed transmission. It's used in everything from this truck to flagship BMW M series cars to Mercedes motorhomes and box trucks. The Hellcat too if you were to order it with an automatic. The early Ram eight speed zf's were actually German built but are now assembled by American workers here at the Fiat owned plant. Very under stressed for the duty most half ton pick-ups face.

So if I were to get a airbag suspension kit that is rated for 5,000lbs Does that mean mine can now tow up to 15,000 plus pounds?

Love my 2016 ram 1500 5.7

I have a Crew with 3:55 axle but 4WD and the air suspension would of fixed the squatting issue you had love mine. Also I added a few goodies S&B CAI, Bullydog Platinum GT tune on premium and a Flowmaster American Thunder muffler. It really woke up an already powerful truck and I bet it would of flew up that mountain and to boot I'm averaging 25 MPG.

Y'all are very particular about watching Payload #s etc these days but when you tested the 14 Titan on the IKE, you had a trailer that was 700lbs over the max rating of 9300lbs for that configuration, AND you had 3 passengers. I really wish I could see how that truck would do with 9,000 lbs,and 2 passengers like most of your recent test. I bet it would still surprise a lot of people despite it's lower 317hp rating, and its 5 speed Auto.

Knob shifter means you dont run through all of the transmissions gears when shifting, saving wear and tear. Should have gotten extra points for that, not deductions.

I wish the trailer , weight and load was identical for every test. Doing a comparison (regardless of the capability of the vehicle) would be more clear with an identical load for every test.

Looks RAM made a real large stride forward with the 8 speed transmission. Nice run down and up the mountain - and sounded plus looking good too. The payload is the only major disappointment for me as we have family of five and tow an travel trailer, when we ran the numbers, outfitted with 4x4 and Hemi, it didn't have the payload to support Travel trailer and family - it was an either or.

they should do the mpg part like they do the mpg loop. the computers can be far off from the real mpg

in the end people this test proves these trucks can DO THIS, so pick the one you like most, they are all good trucks, myself i would like the 6.2l with the 8 speed, but this ram having a 3.92 rear end Vs what GM had what a 3.55? ya... thats a huge gap but this is also how Ram is doing these big towing numbers is just lower gearing. you take a duramax put 4.30's in her and she does 30k easy. anyways i repeat pick the truck you like most and buy it

Agreed. Hockey puck for shifting is no a go for a truck imo. I Imagine how much of a headache and arm sore it would be to back up into a tight spot or any situation that requires maneuvering. I'll stick with my column shifter.

You can buy a performance package from MOPAR performance, which gets installed by the dealer, that brings the 5.7 HEMI up to 435hp, 455lb-ft tq. I question why they don't sell them like that from the factory.
