I want to thank all the folks who will not buy the new Prius simply because of styling: the soft demand for these cars just means that I will have more bargaining power when I buy mine. Thanks again for your superficial judgments putting money in my pocket!

I've only had Dodge Caravans for 20 plus years. I decided to go for a Volt or a Prius. Both being about the same price I decided I didn't want a plug-in. I was surprised how much I like the 2016 Prius. So quiet, so smooth, great sound system and plenty of power. I didn't like theback-up constant beep. I changed it to 1 beep. Most everything is customizable. All the safety features are great, side mirror warning of cars beside me, any traffic or pedestrians behind me. Auto breaking if a car pulls in front of you &slows rapidly, as it happened to me. Cruise control where you can set following distance of cars in front of you. I don't like the white interior trim, some other option there would be nice. Seat warmers are fantastic (in any car). I was happy to get 58 mpg on my first tank, and after watching some video tips I'm at 64 mpg. I was getting 66 mpg but irritating other drivers - oops - but it was fun. At 64 I can still get around and not impede traffic. I like the 2016 very much!

My wife and I are in our 70's and have been driving mostly Town & Country vans. We leased the 2016 Prius 3 pkg and we love it. 3yr year lease and 36,000 miles. Well, we are going to exceed that 1,000 miles per month average but we know we are going to purchase it, at a fixed price, at the end of the 36 month contract because we are exceeding the normal mileage of 1,000 miles per month. We just took it in for the first 5,000 mile checkup. We asked the service person if the mpg was correct because we totally stunned at the 61.2 average mpg we have been getting during the first 5,000 mile check-up. He said it was correct. We don't have any small kids and are aware of the limits on packing for a extended trip, which we are about to take. So, far we love this car and gasoline mileage vs the Town & Country van are are looking forward to More trips and saving lots of money.

I am glad to have the alarm. Many times, I wasn't paying attention, and I thought I was in "D", but I kept hearing the alarm. This alarm brings me back to the conscious world. It is a safety feature.

There is a logical reason for the internal back-up warning buzzer. It is easy to accidentally put the car into reverse, and........ still the car moves extremely quickly......the car can move very far before you realize your error. Therefore they added the warning inside the car.

The car looks great in person! It's quite strange to me how some people have animosity towards Prius owners. The more fuel efficient cars a manufacturer sells the more trucks and SUVs they can offer with terrible fuel economy. $1 petrol and giant SUVs for everyone was nice in the 1990s but most have realized having bigger stuff doesn't mean better.

Thanks for your review of the Prius. I have a 2015 Fit (EX CVT). It was about $20,000 after adding chip guard, tinted windows, mud flaps and one other feature which I forgot. So yes, it's thousands less than a Prius. We travel a lot across Montana, Wyoming, Kansas and Missouri at speeds between 75-83 mph. In Montana and Wyoming where the posted speed limit is 80 mph, we drive about 83 mph and are averaging at that speed about 34-36 mpg. In Kansas on state highways at about 65 mph where it's flat, we get well over 42 mpg. I replaced the factory tires with higher quality ones and this lessens the road noise. The fit has much better storage. When it's just my wife and me, I have a thermarest I put in the back when the seats are down which allows me to lay down horizontally for napping. Very conformable.

The backup beep can be re-programmed to be a single beep when you shift in. It requires a willing dealer mechanic or an OBD2 device such as Christa. Either way your looking at at least $50 to change it but it’s the only thing that really bothers me about the Prius so I’m planning on going the self rout with Christa device and app.

Thanks for the review. You made some great points. I'm upgrading from my 2007 Prius, which I have loved, and do like the new look of the 2016. I had my mechanics take off the seatbelt and reverse beeps, and hope I can do the same in the new version. I, too, strongly dislike the white plastic pieces inside (my salesman says people call it "the toilet." NOT GOOD!). However, they made black covers, at least for the console part. I commute about 70 miles round trip to work, so naturally am grateful for the tremendous fuel efficiency, a strong argument for the Prius, and I also think it's an elegant car--moreso than the Fit. Since I spend so much time in my car, I'm willing to pay extra.

I hated the feel of the Honda Fit, sat in it and couldn't even take it out for a test drive because I felt like it was so cheap and way too low to the ground, not comfortable. Only 2 things I loved about Honda Fit.... Cargo space and magic seats! On the other hand I'm in LOVE with the Prius. I'll be getting the base upgrade package (with pre collision, lane departure with steering assist, heated seats, dinamic cruis control- all this for just over $590) that cost $26,585 MRSP love the styling exterior and interior (Prius chat members think I'm odd for love in the white plastic), found the seats comfortable for adults (5'6"- 5'9") it is very fun to drive and I actually was able to drive in Eco and EV at high speeds while at high speeds. I didn't find the noise bad in city but on the highway it was load. I'm used to the big pillars (2014 Elantra). The noise maker during the reversing can be disabled. For a better view out the back take off the head rests in the back. My only worry is about car seats, waiting for a car seat tests to see how they fit and how the latch system is. The price is a big difference from the Honda Fit but since the Honda Fit feels extremely cheap to me compared to the Prius I am for sure getting a Prius but if the Honda Fit had better quality materials then I would be getting the Honda Fit!

+Ashley Tarrant Thanks, Ashley. Great thoughts. Did you see us test out the car seat in this video? Could help you get a sense for fit in the second row... it's at the 9:30 minute mark.

+Family Wheels yes I did the convertible car seat in the rear facing position. your little guy looked very comfortable and the seat looked secure. wondering if an infant seat would do well and if there would be enough room for a car seat in the middle and if there were 2 car seats set up in the back if there would be enough space for a child or an adult to fit beside the car seats or inbetween them.
@FamilyWheels
@FamilyWheels 8 жыл бұрын
+Ashley Tarrant The second row is quite narrow... even with the increased size for 2016. So I'd think two car seat would fit OK but trying to fit an adult in between would be really, really tight. An infant bucket should fit OK but soak up a little more of the legroom for the front passengers, too.

I'm looking into purchasing a new Prius and found this review most helpful. I've been driving a 2007 VW Jetta around for the past several years and I have been satisfied with its overall performance, particularly in its reliability and handling. However, we're entering into a new age now in terms of energy, fuel economy, and climate change. I'll be test driving one soon. Thanks.

I was trying to get this one at Toyota but couldn't because of my stupid credit score. You barely put on the gas and you fly like mad.

Interesting and useful review approach (multiple Prius owner here:). I know there's not enough time to mention all the stuff about the car in your reviews, but let me add 2 tiny details. Active grill also help the ICE system achieve its operating temp. faster so it can be shut off sooner. This will help your MPG in the city. About the irritating reverse beeping sound - you can just tell the dealer to shut it off for you or do it yourself - easy to find online. Cheers from Europe.

Mind the double post: I feel a comparison to the Honda Fit is unconvincing. The Fit is a great sub-compact but it has all the traits most sub-compacts share; nasty feeling plastics, less-than-stellar build quality, non-existent sound deadening and cheap cost-cutting measures (e.g. sound system, speakers, seats, Infotainment, switchgear etc.) around the entire cabin. Yes the Prius cost a lot more but it gets greater MPG while having more interior space, more sound deadening and a better drive thanks to the inclusion of a multi-link rear suspension (over the Fit's torsion beam) and city-speed EV operation. You also wouldn't fit the same level of equipment on a Fit no matter how much money you throw at Honda over the Prius.

Great points. However, it is often the case that shoppers will look at both of these different classes when hunting for a fuel efficient vehicle. But these are good considerations to keep in mind. Thanks for posting.

Trades46 I agree with you on the Honda Fit. I was considering it before I bout my Prius and although the fit has a very well designed use of interior space, I was turned off but the very cheap utilitarian interior and bought a 3rd gen Prius instead. The Prius interior isn’t great, but it’s good enough for me.

It is pretty roomy for a sedan, big trunk. The 9 inches clearance is also not bad in terms of compromise until they are closer to 3 years old and seats get flipped around. Our older Forester had less space than that, the brand new one is actually quite good.

This is a very good review. I own a 2014 Prius and in the main I am pleased with it. Still not sure if the running cost benefit over the purchase cost is positive. I do like the practicality and the durability. The looks of my 2014 Prius took some getting used to, especially the view from the rear which I still think ugly. The new Prius MAY be an improvement, Jury's out. Nice to hear the performance is stronger although I find the performance of my 2014 Prius acceptable, I usually drive in ECO mode but when needed POWER mode is really good for getting off the line. My other car is a 2003 Audi TT owned from new, so I think I can fairly comment on the performance aspect. Would I buy another Prius? Must say it is tempting. ps my cars are UK spec for what it's worth.

What's your take on Domestic vehicles, such as the 2016 Dodge Caravan? Also wondering about the 2015-2016 Mazda 5 minivan?

+chris j Hi Chris, I haven't gotten into the new Caravan but spent a week in the Chrysler Town and Country last fall and was very impressed by its fit and finish, power and clever use of space. Nothing against the domestics at all. I have two friends with the CX-5 and it's a cool looking van but not as practical for family living, in my mind... it's kind of like minivan light.

I just rented a 2016 Prius for two days to test it out for a possible future purchase. I loved it, except for one major issue: road noise! It is so loud that I have decided to keep my (if you can believe it) quieter 2007 Prius. Hopefully, next year Toyota will make some improvements to address this issue. Otherwise, my next car will not be a Prius.
@FamilyWheels

+mikeifyouplease Interesting, Mike. I didn't not that it was particularly noisy. But it was louder than I expected it to be. Thanks for watching.
@mikeifyouplease
@mikeifyouplease 8 жыл бұрын
+Family Wheels I guess that noise is in the ear of the beholder. :-) I DO wish that sound levels would be measured by sound meters, but it seems that no one AT ALL does that. Also I just want to add that after I returned my rental car to the dealership and told them my concerns, they replied that they have received a lot of complaints already about the road noise. And in fact, it was THEM who stated that hopefully Toyota would take these concerns to heart and make the car quieter for next year's model.

+Family Wheels Thank you! That is such a great idea. Hopefully others will follow your lead. A graph with sound levels at: idle engine, acceleration, smooth pavement, rough pavement, highway, and other standardized conditions would be an enormous help to consumers, like me, who are simply looking for the quietest car that they can find which also fits their needs and budget. Would it be possible for you to splice in a sound addendum to this 2016 Prius video? Thanks!

Tires and road surfaces have a lot to do with it. Mine has softer fuel efficient tires and is very quiet on the highway. Road surface, tires and tire pressure make for a loud ride. A quality tire reduces that.

I'm a simple guy, I see a pooch, I hit like. Now, I've waited for the 4th Gen to buy, the first thing I did was to change the factory tires (Continental EcoContact 5) for the Dunlop SP Sport FastResponse. As soon as I got swapped them the road noise and handling improved. Also I opt for the 15'' tires instead the 17'', much comfier. I'd guess that the stock tires aren't that great, I've seem many sport cars having oem tires that didn't do much for the car. As for the beeping when reversing, it's something the Japanese do for safety. Just like all the phones with camera have the flash and shutter sound on at all times to prevent perverts from taking up skirt pics. When I got my car I asked Toyota if removing the buzzer would void the warranty, they said no, so I did remove it. The only thing that bugs me is the front and rear visibility, thankfully all but the standard version have front and back sensors to compensate for that.

frank smith never really understand it. All hybrids and ev’s make noise. They have the high pitch capacitor noise that’s buzzing from under the hood with the sound of the electric motor. Or the ac compressor buzzing to say nothing of the tire noise. My 04, 08, 2010 prius all made enough noise to be heard at close range. People just are careless and don’t pay attention. Even with the new Prius I can hear the pedestrian warning in the car and yet most people walk in the middle of the road oblivious. Darwinism!

Very interesting and objective review, thank you! Honda FIT is an amazing car, very functional. And it' beautiful, unlike this one. Prius 2016 is even uglier than before. You have said it that the rear lights look like Cadillacs' from the 1950s and they call it a FUTURISTIC car! xD I prefer Prius-Alpha because it's rear window and it's roof are normal. Still, I think cars like Prius have good prospects and I like the fact that when you choose Prius you can be sure that all of the best Toyota's engineers have been focusing mostly on this very car.

Yes it has..I've seen it on the road and it has some sort of orange symbol on the side mirror when I passed it... that's in London UK.

@@Choice777 I"m in Calif and Yes it does and it is awesome. I've been concentrating on this blind spot feature and so appreciate it. I still look over my shoulder from habit and it is right on.

This or the Lexus CT200h?
@FamilyWheels

+penvon The CT200h shares a lot of the same underpinnings as the Prius. The fit and finish of the CT200h is much better and it would fit a dog better in the back. But it's also going to cost you a lot more... especially as you start adding bells and whistles. As a value concious dad, I'd lean toward the Prius with the Technology package.

I was also wondering between these 2 cars, but your answer just hits the spot. Taking a look on the trunk space and also the space to install a child seat, I decided for the Prius and I love it, I decided as a concious dad. Greetings from Chile.

I'd rather have a manual transmission cheaper vehicle. but in Canada the price of gasoline may make this vehicle a better purchase long run. all depends on price of gas.

Honestly speaking ~ the 2016 Prius is by far the UGLIEST CAR I've seen for 2016. Toyota has completely lost their mind in their design department.

+George Massalas I don't mind it from the back... but a lot of people are complaining about the design.

The Japanese designs have become a little too Japanese for Americans lately with very complicated “transformer” looking lines. Just look at the the new Honda Civic, especially the SI!. This is a clash of style culture. It’s still such a good car I’d buy it anyway, even though I’m not a big fan of the stying.

Family Wheels I don't really like that either. Its just too big and gaudy for me. I guess the main reason it bothers me is that I live in Berkeley, Ca, which is the land of the Prius, and I will be getting stuck behind these things soon. In fact its already beginning to happen.
