In this video I measure the transmission oil volume of my 2019 KTM 250 EXC TPI. The manual states to use 800ml, but apparently that is only if the engine has been torn down and cleaned. Going forward I'll be using 675ml.

I have always drained my old oil into a graduated cup and measured the ML or CC (Same Thing) and then added what I took out. I have found it to be almost always just under 700 ML, essentially exactly what your video is showing. I think the 675 ML is a solid number, at least by my many many changes. Also, I just got the TOKYO oil change tool and it is perfect. I hate making a mess, the whole reason why I don't use the oil level bolt in the first place and the TOKYO drain tool completely eliminates the mess on the other side, so a huge thumbs up on your tool. Great craftsmanship by the way!

That's great feedback and pleased you like the Tokyo Offroad Oil Drain Tool. Yes, when I used the oil level screw to set the oil level it made a huge mess over the cases, frame, skid plate, stand and mat. Definitely something I wouldn't want to do for each oil change, not to mention the risk of stripping the case threads.

I switched from filling to the check bolt to adding 800mL since I've read that bolt can eventually strip. Thanks for confirming that I too have been adding too much. I'll use 675mL moving forward!

Thanks for adding some clarity to this topic. I've wondered about this when servicing my 2018 KTM 250 XC-W. I have typically used 800ml as well. I don't like removing that screw every time for fear of stripping it out. I don't have the manual in front of me right now but I believe it states "oil must come out" of the check level screw hole. Does that mean if oil is not coming out it's not enough, or that it should drain to the level of the screw as you tested?
@TokyoOffroad
@TokyoOffroad 6 жыл бұрын
Yes, the oil level screw case thread is quite easily damaged. One of my riding buddies has stripped his. Regarding the oil level setting method, I believe the method I showed in the video is correct, remove the screw and wait until it stops overflowing. If it's not overflowing add more oil...

Did you drain the oil with the bike just setting on the side stand or do you lean the bike all the way over and shake both sides back and fourth?
@TokyoOffroad
@TokyoOffroad 6 жыл бұрын
I always drain the transmission oil with my bike on the side stand, leaning over to the left. The garage floor is level laterally and slopes slightly towards the front of the garage (to allow water to drain). Therefore the engine is tilted to the left (due the side stand) and to the rear (due to the slightly sloping garage floor). I previously tried tipping the bike over to the left further to see how much additional oil would come out, but only a very small amount came out so I don't bother to do that.

Thank you for information. I have got my first 2 stroke exc 300 tpi. Personally I feel like clutch bit point is too sharp and it doesn't slip enough. May be its related with too thin oil. Please give me advise for gearbox oil. Dealer recommended me Motorex Gear oil 10W30. But in manual is 15W50. Personally I feel like clutch bit point is too sharp and it doesn't slip enough. Motorex is little bit expansive. I think about Motul 7100 4T 15W50. Thank you for advice.

Yes, there will always be some oil left inside when you do your oil changes. When I did the measurement I drained the oil the same way as I always do (on the side stand) so I know how much fresh oil I need to add to bring it up to the correct level, without using the oil level screw.

My 2022 300 XC TPI says 800 ml. in the manual. Mine takes 700 ml when doing a change as this is when it starts to run out the level measuring screw hole. I believe the 800 ml. is for after a complete tear down and re-assembly.

I have a problem with an oil leakage from shaft seal after the bike is warmed up and ridden for a while. Changing a seal didn't help. Could it be the problem related to the fact that I filled 800ml of oil without checking of actual level? I think it happened due to thermal air pressure increase inside the case which caused excessive amount of oil to be leaked.
@TokyoOffroad
@TokyoOffroad 5 жыл бұрын
Serhii Khachko - Assuming you drained the old oil, putting in 800ml should be fine. It does bring the oil level up a little above the oil level check bolt, but many people use 800ml and I haven’t heard of any issues. I think your leak is due to something else. When you changed the countershaft seal did you replace the o-ring and the sprocket washer too? Also check your chain slack is within speck. Too little slack can cause leaks at the counter shaft.

I think there are two negatives: 1) You'll get slightly more clutch drag, particularly when the engine is cold; 2) You'll spend more on oil.
@Stealthbruva
@Stealthbruva 5 жыл бұрын
Wouldnt it be better to fill the 800ml up . Cause when i drain the oil i even take out the plug and kick the kick starter a few times to get every bit of oil out from everywhere from the sump . I fill up 800ml and wait till the oil stops coming from the oil bolt indicator. Tighten her up and shes good to go I see were ur coming from . But would it be bad on the bike having an extra 50 or even 100ml of oil in it ??
@TokyoOffroad
@TokyoOffroad 5 жыл бұрын
No, I don't think it's that bad to have a small amount of extra oil. I personally don't think there is a major issue in adding 800ml, other than a marginal increase in clutch drag and you'd be spending a little more on oil. And as someone else mentioned it would weigh a little more, but 125g this low down on the bike would not be noticeable. My motivation for this exercise was to accurately measure the amount of oil being drained out from when the oil level is set correctly, so I can add the right amount of oil without having to use the messy oil level check bolt method. But as they say, there are many ways to skin a cat, so it's perfectly fine to use the oil level check bolt, just be very careful not to strip the case threads like some others have.

Im going with the theory that the oil drain screw is the minimum amount of oil.....125cc of oil is 8 table spoons no big deal spread over the width of the engind. Can somone point me to the referance in the manual that says 800cc on a rebuild, cause I sure cant find it either in the owners manual or the service manual. the only number is 800

How come there isn’t a window for the oil ?
@TokyoOffroad
@TokyoOffroad 4 жыл бұрын
Typically 2-strokes don't burn transmission oil (unless the crankshaft seals go) so the oil level stays very constant and it not necessary to monitor the level between changes. 4-strokes can burn oil during use and as such the level will go down over time and a window is useful for monitoring that.

I have a 2016 KTM 200 xc-w with over 250 hrs, I will say it's not critical to have the exact amount of oil in the bike. And that oil level screw will strip out if you keep using it. Just put about 3/4 of a quart of good heavy weight oil, non synthetic because the clutch will slip. The oil in the gear case is just for a gear bath. If you have a bit too much oil you may be better protected when you crash and the bike is laying on its side still running. I've been riding longer than you.

@TokyoOffroad

Robson Enduro - Yes, that’s correct. The issue is that it’s time consuming doing it that way every time and also creates a lot of mess. The bike needs to be perfectly level for it to be accurate. Also the oil check bolt size is small (M6) and torque spec relatively high at 10Nm. It’s quite easy to strip the case thread when installing the bolt and I know several people who have stripped the threads. As such I prefer to measure out the oil and not use the oil level check bolt.

@@chrismarshall4814 I want to second your initial statement! I also used 675 ml in my previous oil change and had problems with the clutch. I dropped the oil after the ride and it was all burned and smelly (as clutch residue smelly). We ride really hard trails, where the clutch gets abused a lot, but I never experienced any clutch related problems until now. My understanding is that extra ml of oil up until 800 ml will protect the clutch from overheating in severe conditions. I never had this problem before, we ride the same trails, the only thing new was the 675ml of oil, too little in my opinion. I put 800 ml immediately afterwards and I returned the next weekend to do the same uphills. The problem disappeared.
