We headed out to Baja to review the newest addition to the Can-Am family, the Maverick X3. As Can-Am’s latest model in their line-up of sport UTV’s, the Maverick X3 is available in 3 models - the base X3, X3 X DS, and X3 X RS. We put the base model of the X3 to the test in the sand, and pushed it to the limit on hard-packed trails as well, all to see if it could live up to the hype. Check out the video to see if this turbo-charged beast held up to our expectations.

Should have distinguished your takes from the Base X3 and the X3 X RS. Big difference in suspension.

Yes, there is a big difference on paper, but for most, myself included, there really isn't. Our written report will outline some of these things you mention. It should be published any day now and we'll share the link with you.

so in the video you said out of the 3 models you would take the base or the others pks explain why ? I have a rzr s1000 and i am on the fence to getting the x3 base ?

If it is, the Halo Locker should work on it so no problem if you want a locker.

so you can send the maverick diff to them and it will be just like the RZR? I've only ever owned the xp1k and my major hangup on the can-am was that diff.

Yes, better than a rzr because it will be able to operate as a full locker where as the rzr is not a full locker. Ive had a maverick xrs and a xp1000. Never ended up needing more than the visco loc but depends on what kind of riding you do.

Yes. It's a turbocharged inline three.

I read the follow up article and it looks like the shift gate was wearing out. I'm I seeing it right. It should be dialed in for the asking price. For 28k otd I bought a new 2008 Toyota FJ. Loaded. Is our money taking that bad of a hit? Great review. Baja rules.

Nice review. Just a question - why are ATV reviewers calling side by sides "cars" these days? Is it something the ATV manufacturers are asking you to say to justify the insane prices of some of these machines? Side by sides aren't cars. The amount of engineering in these things simply pales in comparison to an automobile.

Agreed - it takes way more R&D might to engineer a automobile and/or truck versus a UTV. The current breed of sport side-by-sides are referred to as "cars", because that's what they are rapidly evolving into. The interior is becoming more and more automotive-based, as is the drivetrain, to a certain extent (Yamaha as well as another red brand's offering that is suppose to be coming soon). Suspension travel and overall handling is also encroaching on the the truck-side of the business.

I "Dumped" my 2016 RZR Turbo to buy one of these. Could not get the dealers to fix the recall (All they were concerned about was fixing their own inventory so they could sell them) and figured I`d be making payments on it and missing the dune season."Shame on Polaris"!

Pros. Less hp than the 2017 rzr turbo. Cons. Power steering recall

Similar -- the turbocharged Triple definitely sounds the business. The CVT drivetrain noise detracts from that a bit though.

I might be the first person to say this..but I sat in one and I wasn't super impressed..IMO your to low, now let start off by saying I ride predominantly out east..tighter trails lots of rock, mud that sorda thing, but the maverick although is a sweet machine, wouldn't be my choice. Im not knocking any brand, I didn't like how "plastic-ie" it looked. Maybe having driven one I would change my mind.. I have contemplated these things with a set of 32" intimidators and a halo locker but i just can't seem to like it... Also i bet you get muddy as hell riding in one!!!!

Nathan Bucci Because more than anything, it resembles a car. why do people call them bikes? People who aren't in this hobby probably think that's retarded. Is it still an atv or utv? This thing is innovating and crossing boundaries. Call it whatever you want.

I reference the term 'car' because these vehicles are becoming more closely oriented with that segment (off-road) every couple of years. These days, they drive very much like, well, a car.

No, this machine still employs its proprietary Visco-Lok auto-locking front diff. On the trail it works great - for hard core rock crawling, not so much...
