My latest unboxing review is for the redesigned 2017 Chevrolet Volt. I'm sure you're at least somewhat familiar with the first generation Volt, which came out in 2011, but some might be confused as to how its technology works. That's what I want to clarify. The Volt is not a pure EV like the Tesla Model S. Nor is it a hybrid like the Toyota Prius. The Volt is officially classified as a plug-in hybrid electric.
By default, it starts in all-electric mode, thanks to an electric motor that's powered by a lithium-ion battery. Power is sent to the front wheels via a CVT transmission. But here's how the Volt is unique: when the battery is drained, you don't immediately have to plug it in for a recharge. Instead, a small gasoline engine acts as a battery generator, enabling the electric motor to keep going, thus eliminating range anxiety. It's a pretty brilliant system and I don't think the Chevrolet Volt receives enough credit. Enjoy the review!

The "5th seat" is specifically for Uber and Lyft requirements. That's all. It's fine for a child seat.

Power seats add weight with arguably not much additional value. Weight reduces range.

Power seats are not necessary. They drain the battery faster. This car looks like a great car, especially since leather seats are optional. With the rebates offered both on federal tax and state levels, the purchase price is lowered significantly. I think that Chevrolet has built a wonderful, practical car that looks great. The only limit is that it seats four comfortably, and if that fifth passenger is a child, no problem.

You're right; power seats aren't always necessary. Personally, I don't think they'll last forever because their motors will eventually burn out. And yes, the Volt is an all-around wonderful and fuel efficient car.

power seats run off the 12v system in the car completely separate from the 360v pack. Yes the converter (EV version of an alternator) does recharge that 12v system while powered however the draw is so minimal that power seats don't have any perceivable effect on range.

The bigger reason for no power seats is to reduce the price of the car.

The reviewer makes so many mistakes here...First he states electric range at "45 miles". In truth the new Volt is EPA rated at 53 pure electric miles ( "106mpge" ) and in moderate weather most owners see more than that. Next, this guy states the Volt's battery pack is under the back seat - it is, however, a T-shaped pack which runs down the middle of the car and a portion of it is under the back seat. An even larger screw up is he stated the Volt's transmission is a CVT - it's not. The Volt has no transmission as you would normally think. It has 2 electric motors connected to a planetary gearset directly connected to the front axles - no CVT here. The planetary gearset is much like that of the Prius yet it doesn't give you that rubber band feeling a CVT does. You would think Fox would be more accurate in a review of a new tech in a new product that many consumers misundersand. While the new Volt is quicker, lighter and seats one child more than the last generation. It's sad even so-called journalists can get so much wrong...Basically, those looking for an efficient car find the new Volt to have the top customer satisfaction of all fuel-saving cars...and it out "Priuses" the Prius. Which is pretty noteworthy and deserves a test drive. Prius fans point out that the non-plug-in hybrid Prius eventually passes the Volt in overall MPG once over about 175 miles of driving during ONE TRIP is achieved. In other words, the Volt far outshines the Prius MPG during average commutes of 20-50 miles, but if you're a travelling salesman who drives over 175 miles per day, the Prius hybrid may be the best choice for you. Pure efficiency aside, I find the in the subjective category of appearance, the Prius looks like a science project and the new Volt looks sleek and contemporary. In handling, although the all-new 2016 Prius has a new suspension and handles a bit better than it's predecessors, the Volt still is quicker, faster and feels more fun on twisty roads and curves. The weight of the battery pack which is much larger than Prius - gives the car a planted feel and surprisingly the new Volt's 0-30mph time ( basically one block from stop sign to stop sign ) is very impressive. You can surprise Corvettes and Camaros and leave 'em behind! Of note is that Toyota is set to introduce a new Prius ( "Volt Fighter" ) that has a plug and a larger battery pack. They call this car the "Prius Prime" and it's very expensive. The Prime goes a paltry 25 miles or so ( less than half that of Volt ) on electric and has 2 bucket seats in back ( seats only 4 ). The Volt is much improved. I'd much rather have one than a Prius. This reviewer could do a lot by informing you much more about Volt's competitors. Tesla and BMW's i3 do not directly compare. The i3 is more of a city car - commute car. If you buy the BMW i3 with the gas range extender, that engine sits behind the back seat and is actually a Taiwanese ( Kymco ) 3 cylinder scooter engine that only gives you 1/2 hour of driving before you have to fill up the gas tank giving you another 1/2 hour! It's basically a PANIC backup when you're almost home ( i3 only goes 70-100 miles electric then needs hours to fill up! ) and you're low on juice. The BMW is also over $52,000 MSRP!... Volt, is a completely unique product. Nobody else gives you over 50 miles pure electric drive before the 1.5L gas engine silently cuts in giving you seamless driving that goes from 106mpge ( another number this review gets wrong ) EPA electric equivalent miles per gallon. Every Prius utilizes Toyota's "Hybrid Synergy Drive". This was once the state-of-the-art in hybrids. I know, I bought one! But today, the Volt passes Prius by far. When you drive both, first thing you may notice is that the Prius' gas engine cuts in and out CONSTANTLY - even when you have a full charge! If you floor it to pass, - Prius' gas engine cuts in. If you stop at a light and have to give it some power to keep up with traffic flow, GAS ENGINE KICKS ON AGAIN...Hills? SAME...Even when you have a full battery in the Prius, you will start it up and the gas engine takes you through the parking lot! This is opposite to what you expect. In the Volt it's pure electric in all but the most drastic acceleration scenarios - say you are passing on a hill, or you floor it to go 100mph on the freeway. I believe all-electric ( eery-smooth, silent, and quick ) is what PHEV buyers want. They don't want this gas engine kicking on and off constantly during a drive. In that, the Volt is unique. Also, when you buy one, you qualify for the full $7,500 tax refund from Uncle Sam. Something the Prius does not. BIG PICTURE - The bottom line is that the Volt is the only car that gives you clean, EV driving that you can either A) Plug In or B) NOT plug in. Many Volt owners only use the 120V socket in their garage or driveway to refuel at night. That came as a big surprise. You can buy a 240V ( clothes dryer type ) charger that charges your car in less than half the time ( 3 hours ) but it's extra. Nice thing is, you don't have to if you don't wish to! Other pure EV drivers are stranded without a charge. Pure EV drivers ( Nissan LEAF, BMW i3 without expensive range-extender ) find themselves stuck and panic-stricken looking for that next recharge. Even Tesla owners can find themselves stuck. This makes the Volt even better than all of those. True some people own several cars, and an all-electric car is very nice to have for short runs ( 100 miles out, and 100 back if you have a 200 mile range ). But if you're like most people, you don't want that hassle of wondering when and if you can find a working and unblocked EV charger someplace. This makes the Volt solution absolutely genius. No car is perfect and that obviously includes the Volt. It's biggest shortcoming is the back seat. You won't want to put 6 footers back there for more than a few miles. At that, 2 adults back there is tops. The new middle seating area is best for a child seat or child. It can be useful for that - just don't expect expansive room back there. Cargo is another thing. Since it's a hatch with folding rear seats, you can haul anything Costco throws at you painlessly - most times with the back seats up and not folded! With the seats folded down, you can sleep back there... GM really should be applauded for the engineering that went into the Volt. It stands alone in the electrified car world. It tops conventional hybrids and no other manufacturer makes a plug-in that does what it does. Most people think they drive hundreds of miles per day. We don't. Most of us drive less than 50 miles/day and 85% of us less than 80. In that, the Volt gives you hyper gas mileage ( over 100mpg, often 250mpg ). This means some Volt owners go months between visiting a gas station. I think reviews like this need to be more accurate. This fellow did not do his homework.

First off, thanks for providing so much feedback and commentary. Also, the Volt does have a continuously variable automatic with 4 operating modes. The amount of detail I went into was not meant for technical enthusiasts such as yourself but for the so-called everyday buyer who doesn't always understand the technical details. The details about this particular Volt came directly from its dealership sticker. And, by the way, do you own a new Volt? Work for GM? Just asking because your knowledge, quite clearly, is vast on the subject.

Carbuzz - J Mel is correct. The Volt does not have a CVT. It is pointless to argue that it does. And it has 7 modes, not 4..
@ZenerDragon
@ZenerDragon 7 жыл бұрын
Volt uses a triple clutch system engaging and disengaging ring gears depending on which mode the car is in (EV, Hold, or Charge sustain) and the current vehicle speed. There is no transmission only a reduction gear set that never shifts. No Volt has ever had a CVT transmission as it is entirely unnecessary. I own a Volt, and know people who work for GM in the Volt development program. A simple search would have revealed this. GM dealer salespeople know very little to nothing about the Volt and in most cases will try to turn customers away from the car. Dealership make their profits on service. The Volt has little to no service requirements with oil changes being in the range of every 2 years depending on how often the generator is used.

YW about the feedback. Truly I'm not here to be a know-it-all, but respectively, the Volt, again, does NOT have a CVT. It's officially called the Voltec drive system. Volt doesn't truly have a transmission in the sense you and I think of one. So it's no wonder folks like yourself ( And dealers nationwide, if you check AutoTrader.com, Kelley Blue Book ads, etc. ) get confused. It goes about it's work automatically in that you don't shift it for it to operate within all 5 modes - Thus the confusion in auto dealer ads that say Volt has "an automatic transmission". The driver can choose between 4 USER operating modes - "Sport", "Normal", "Hold" and "Mountain". The 2nd generation Volt adds an internal mode used when mixing input from the gas range extender and electric motors. The Voltec system has 5 modes ( 3 Extended and 2 EV ) and uses 3 clutches. The first Volt had 4 modes. To dig into it technically, the Voltec system operates in a eCVT or electronically continuously variable transmission mode for 2 of it's 5 modes where it mixes input from the gas engine and electric motors. This doesn't make the entire transmission a CVT. In truth, it's a unique and very intelligent solution to linking the 2 electric motors with the gas range extender for top efficiency that I believe GM engineers do not get enough credit for inventing. - I hope this puts this topic to rest. To aid all who want to know more about the Volt's transmission, here is a great source that is FAR simpler to read than the GM Technical paper they submitted at the SAE World Congress. It was put together by a friend of mine, former Volt owner and contributor over at GM-Volt.com. gm-volt.com/2015/02/20/gen-2-volt-transmission-operating-modes-explained/ To answer CarBuzz, no - I don't work at GM or Chevrolet. I'm just a big fan of the Volt and have educated myself about it since it's inception since it is a car that is so misunderstood. Your piece and the comments here are big evidence of that. Best to say it's a very complex machine that makes life better and more convenient for anyone who seeks a car that can do what no pure EV or hybrid can. In that, it's proven very reliable also. There is a gen 1 Volt driver out there with over 300,000 miles on his with over half of that on pure EV ( GAS FREE! ) driving. He says he has over 97% of his original battery life still remaining. Hope this helps.

@ Dave - Thanks Dave. Hope I was detailed enough in my response below to answer CarBuzz's assertions ( again ) that Volt has a CVT. To be fair, it is confusing. My eyes usually glaze over when reading highly technical explanations - I'm not an engineer. I did, however, find this fascinating - and admit it took a few times for me to read over before I got the gist. --- Technically, gen 1 Volt had 4 operating modes and gen 2 has 5. Of those modes, drivers can choose from 4 drive modes: "Normal", "Sport", "Mountain" and "Hold". --- Phew! It is fairly complicated - Bottom Line: It works and works fantastically. I like what Priya, the lady in the Volt testimonial ad said in 2013: "I save a crapload on gas" ( the tagline beneath her said: "She meant boatload"...LOL! gm-volt.com/2015/02/20/gen-2-volt-transmission-operating-modes-explained/

I have owned a 2017 for about three months now, I have come to the conclusion that this car is perfect for my family. We love it. Best car we have owned and our last car was BMW. Our daily commute is under its range, so rarely use any gas. It's great driver. I have taken several mountain trips and it easily handles them. I don't miss power seats, but it would have been better if thy moved the adjusting lever to outside verses the inside so you don't have to reach all the way across and down to move the seat back and forward. Also, the included charger is capable of stage two with addition of a easily manufactured cable. Cost me $35 dollars to build. Reduced my charge time to 4.5 hours from zero.

No. A CVT varies the drive gear ratio. The Volt's power train setup is something completely different. It is essentially a direct drive reduction gear unit with multiple power sources applying force to via clutch packs.

In Washington state, the portion of the car valued under $32,000 is exempt from state sales tax. That nets a tax savings between $2,600 to $3,100 for electric car buyers depending on where the dealer is located in Washington. This is a sales tax exemption, not a tax credit; so you get it irrespective of your income level. This car is really worth a look, if you are seeking a compact car. This review is correct about that middle seat in the back; it's better to still think of this as a four-seater. But it's a blast to drive. My daily commute of about 45 miles, round trip, includes highway driving. I had a few longer trips in my first three months of ownership, but my first fill up was still after I put 3500 miles on the odometer.

Short answer: 14 kWh. Long answer: The 2017 Volt has an 18.4 kWh battery. However, it will only let you bring it down to approximately a 23% State Of Charge (SOC). Starting with a full charge and driving until the gas generator kicks on, the most battery I have ever used (according to the Volt's energy display) is 14.2 kWh. The battery reserve is still available to help accelerate, climb inclines and start the gas engine, you just can't use it to drive in EV mode at that point.

FYI ... at 7:25 you said that the "gasoline engine will recharge the battery". That's not true at all. The gas engine simply produces electricity to power the electric drive motor. It never charges the battery. You need to plug the car in to charge it. That said, your overview is well done. I currently have a 2013 Volt, picking up a 2017 Volt tomorrow to add to the family. It's a great all around car for anyone who has the ability to simply plug it in at night.
@daveriley6310
@daveriley6310 7 жыл бұрын
Actually, it will. Like you, I have bought 2 Volts. Charging with the onboard range extender, however, is not efficient. Two examples of how the generator DOES charge the batteries are: deplete your range near zero , select mountain mode and the range extender will bring the battery pack up to around 16 miles; or with range depleted, park the car and engage maintenance mode, and the range extender will again charge the battery pack. Just as most people think the Volt's ICE will not drive the wheels, it is a misconception. It is uncommon in Gen 1, but it does occur under certain circumstances.

Krivan Yam - used 2013 Volt was a great choice. Very affordable price point, especially for the Premium model with leather, and many low mile examples can be found. I can eke out over 50 miles on a charge in my 2013 vs. around 46 typical maximum on the 2012 I had previously. The new Prius Prime is going to sell well, probably eventually surpassing the annual Volt sales. But for many people, a Volt would be a better choice, whether new or used.
