My latest unboxing review is for the redesigned 2017 Chevrolet Volt. I'm sure you're at least somewhat familiar with the first generation Volt, which came out in 2011, but some might be confused as to how its technology works. That's what I want to clarify. The Volt is not a pure EV like the Tesla Model S. Nor is it a hybrid like the Toyota Prius. The Volt is officially classified as a plug-in hybrid electric.
By default, it starts in all-electric mode, thanks to an electric motor that's powered by a lithium-ion battery. Power is sent to the front wheels via a CVT transmission. But here's how the Volt is unique: when the battery is drained, you don't immediately have to plug it in for a recharge. Instead, a small gasoline engine acts as a battery generator, enabling the electric motor to keep going, thus eliminating range anxiety. It's a pretty brilliant system and I don't think the Chevrolet Volt receives enough credit. Enjoy the review!
