Yes, "Top Tier" fuel is a thing. Since modern cars have sealed fuel systems, if there's excessive water in the fuel it was from the gas station.

I am watching all of your videos about the 1.5 ECOBOOST engines. I was blessed with a gift of a 2016 Fusion with that engine with 69K miles. It runs great and was serviced regularly. It seems that oil changes and good fuel are the best things that the Consumer can do.

I just wanted to thank you for your help , yesterday I took it to the ford dealer and they kept it over night to do the coolant test and I called this morning it indeed was coolant intrusion and the motor has to be replace . I have had it at the dealers 6 times over the last year and no one could figure out what was wrong . I felt like I was going crazy . The coolant intrusion starts off on my car as a shake a only highway speeds when it was cold and then as months went on it got worse and worse to the point I was just going choke up my loss and get a new car because i didnt feel safe in the escape anymore so again thank you very much and keep up the good work and to give a little extra info I over service my car with 65000 I had the trans serviced twice , fuel induction done twice , all brake fluid changed and I change my motor oil around every 3500 to 4000 miles with synthetic Mobil 1 oil .

Several of your videos have come in handy while swapping a 2020 production engine in a MY2019 1.5 fusion SE with the coolant intrusion problem. Out of warranty (99k mi) so this was most economical. Keep up the good work and taking the time to do things the right way. A true problem solving mechanic!

you go way above and beyond to make sure your work is right. I admire that. Today its all about volume and its so hard to balance quality and volume. our shop hired a guy who is real fast. They over worked him, over booked him, and the guy was like a machine and just pushed thru it. some of the work was less than stellar, but with the volume he was doing it was understandable. Now here I am, im not speedy gonzales. Im a steady paced guy that likes to cover all the bases. And now here I am feeling second best because the "suits"(upper managment) seem to like him more than me. Even tho Im the guy that fixes everything that no one else can fix. up to and including situations with customers that get out of hand. its crazy to see how our industry is changing more for quanity instead of quality. I admire your work and really hope i can be like you when i grow up! (im 40 btw)

I always watch your videos and you do a damn good job with diagnosis and the break down. And I own a 2015 Ford Fusion Titanium with 21,000 miles and change the oil every 4000 miles. My first Ford ever and I love the car!

We at our shop have a Shell station next door we use for our personal vehicles & recommend it to our customers because it's a busy station and gets fresh fuel often ...👍

Well done dude! You are a super top tier technician. These DI turbo engines are so complex compared to the old engines. And there is little margin for error when rebuilding them. I will say one thing about the 1.5L in my 2020 Fusion.. that oil does not smell like gasoline anywhere near close to what my Kia 2.4L would smell like. Even after a fresh oil change in that Kia and driving 5 miles, the oil smelled like 50% gasoline. I know all these DI engines have fuel dilution issues but it seems to not be as bad in the Ford 1.5t than in some other cars.

It makes you very unhappy when a dealer can’t figure out what is wrong with your car. I had a Dodge Ram van with a V8. One of the spark plugs didn’t fire. The computer jacked up the voltage to the coil. Burned out at least 3 ignition coils before some mechanic in a small town figured it out. I’m not angry with anyone but it shows you the value of a good well trained mechanic

Great video. Yes, I don't think people realize how sensitive newer vehicles are to fuel quality. I use Shell gas as well, even though it cost $0.05+/gal more or so, but my cars run so much better with it. If you want ethanol free fuel for your gas jug and the gas station uses the same hose and nozzle for the ethanol free gas and the "up to 10%", put 2 gallons in your car and then by this time the hose should be pure gas. I see guys pull up and get 1 gallon of ethanol free gas in their little lawn mower gas jug and the truth is on those shared hoses, they didn't get any ethanol free gas.

I wish there were more mechanics out there like this. Alot of people always get a shit mechanic and then blame them all. Just turned in my 17 ford escape 1.5 on tuesday. They tested it and sure enough they said ill be getting a new block. Car only has 40k on it. Hoping it comes back without any issues.

Hey great video you are so right I hauled fuel for 6 years and I always tell people to stay away from mom and pops gas stations because are always running out of fuel because they are playing the market everyday for that price.

Thank you man your a great ford mechanic i have a 2020 mustang ecoboost its tuned i only use shell 93 octane and fully synthetic Mobil 1 oil 5w30 and the car always runs great i know i probably be rejected warranty now by ford if anything goes wrong with my engine i had everything done in a certified shop.

Just proves that sometimes it's the basics that are being missed when diagnosing the vehicles.

I had bought brand new pick up truck, and I noticed when I fueled up at the station closest to my house it had a rough idle. nothing crazy just felt a little rough for a brand new truck. I decided to try a different brand, and almost immediately it ran so much smoother. I learned these newer vehicles are sensitive to the quality of fuel

Fuel quality really is key. Especially on the new breeds. Everything I own gets Petro 94 (Canada). For the few bucks extra a tank it eliminates a variable of concern completely.

there are two fuel stations I purchase from local and the same brand when traveling. I never buy the lowest-priced fuel I find and not from any other brands. I learned that lesson from my boss in Florida as he would buy the lowest-priced gas and always had misfire problems. he started using one brand of fuel from particular stations and the problem went away. he never varied his purchases from other stations and did not have fuel issues again.

Im the original owner 2011 Raptor with 119k miles... Over the years, she has taught me a few lessons... And I certainly agree Rich, it makes a difference where you buy your fuel.. Also, When gas prices here in NY was over $4 a gallon a few years back, I tried to save myself some $$$ on close to 36 gallons of fuel..That was a HUGE mistake.. I put either 87or 89 in her, and boy, she let me know she wasnt happy with it... I put nothing but 93 octane in..Now i could do 91, but for the few cents difference, I just go with 93 and purchase my fuel from Sunoco..ALSO, on 1 of my oil changes, over 75k miles, they decided to put full synthetic oil in her..I left the shop, and in a matter of 20-30 mins of driving, I instantly notice she was running rough, hard..I KNEW right then, it was the oil.. ALL my oil changes, prior, had been a blend... Went back to the dealership, and they were kind enough to redo the oil change with the blend at no cost to me.. Its AMAZING how the type of oil, gas and even oil filter can corrupt your vehicle performance...

Very nice job with this one! I’ve heard everyone say that the 1.5 is a nightmare engine. I bought my 18 escape brand new, and aside from oil changes every 4,000 miles that little engine hasn’t needed a thing and it still runs like brand new. It’s at almost 100,000 miles. I must have got a good one. 🤷🏼‍♂️

There will be a lot more fuel issues right now due to the trouble there is delivering fuel to stations atm. As the bulk tanks go empty the fuel produces less vapor pressure and thus more atmospheric air and its included water vapor enter the tanks and cause condensation. ALL under ground fuel tanks (Which are federally required now in the U.S.) have a 'dead bottom' that the pump pickup doesn't reach. This is where free water will collect so it can be drained off through the sump discharge. However, on a tank that gets empty often due to lack of deliveries then it can reach the pickup before a sample is taken and it's drained off.

Heard about fuel issues years ago when ethanol blends were starting to be common in gas stations. Petro gas & ethanol separates especially if car sits undriven for a length of time .As heat of day dissipates and condensation happens in fuel tank, since ethanol is heavier than gas, and attracts water ,sits, at bottom of tank- where the pump pickup is, causing cold start/ drivability issues ,. More prevalent in low octane gas. Ford H.O's generally reccomend a good high octane for good drivability, and is usually a decal In. Fuel nozzle door or port.and printed in model handbook

i agree with you about fuel, i use shell 89 and 92 octane fuel only for about 3 years now, big difference

my friend is a fleet manager for a multinational freight company, and he orders fuel in bulk from specific refineries, as he knows which produce the least ethanol content. He says the ethanol content can often trump price variances. His example is 1% extra ethanol = 3% less mileage and reduces the periods between servicing by months. He also says by paying 5% extra for fully synthetic oils/lubricants he averages over 10% saving on service costs.

A local shell actually closed down here because they kept getting water in their fuel. They also kept mixing up diesel and gas when filling the storage tanks.

Ecoboost engines need good fuel. I have a 3.5 ecoboost in my F150, and a Valencia 2.0 ecoboost in my Lincoln MKC. They need at minimum, 89 octane and I use shell. No issues.

Bad fuel/wrong fuel is a real issue, I've had non-flex-fuel cars come in with 40% ethanol content that threw all kinds of weird codes. I've also filled up my own truck and noticed a sharp loss of power a couple blocks the road. When it happened to me, I hooked up the scanner I keep in the center console and sure enough the knock sensors are off the charts, octane adjust ratio is maxed out, and my truck is running half the ignition timing it normally runs. I filled up with 93oct at a branded top-tier station when this happened, I'm not sure what went wrong but I've never filled up at the station again.

Sometimes the t/s tree makes you scratch your head and wonder who wrote it, but 99% of the time it’s reliable. You get the occasional odd ball problem that takes you in circles and has to be found using experience and your gut. Those are always fun! In the heavy diesel world, there was a huge learning curve with DEF storage at truck stops. Truck after truck came in with inefficiency codes for the scr catalyst. Drain the tank, purge the pump, and take it for a good drive on the highway. All of that for free! Warranty won’t pay for it, and the big fleets get freebies to keep them happy. Everyone thinks your genus and they are so grateful. So grateful they no bill the ticket and now you lose time.

Nice work. Coming pretty heavily from the outboard world, where engines commonly don't get used for several months at a time or longer, like a broken record I tell guys troubleshooting them that stale or contaminated gas has killed more boat engines than anything. I'll admit, i don't immediately think of fuel when troubleshooting autos because they are usually used often. But yeah, junk gas will make the best run like the worst.

WOW simple bad fuel my dad always tells me watch where you get your gas from. This is something I always listen to and my sister doesn't. Good old fashioned common sense thanks 😊👍🏾

We live in Rural Tennessee, I avoid Ethanol fuels due to consistency. Ethanol is hydrostatic and evaporates. So we use 93 marine no Ethanol. We see better fuel mileage and better oil life avoiding Ethanol entirely.

Yeah I wish my Ford dealership mechanics were as thorough ...I have a 2016 Escape that had a wire cut on the right signal which I had them repair , which they caused in replacing a bulb why they didn't just splice the broken wire instead of cutting the good one to show me why the turn signal didn't work is infuriating to say the least , in doing so they had to remove the windshield washer reservoir . They didn't put it back in proper it wouldn't hold any fluid . Needless to say I've lost any faith their service dept . I've gone to another. Nondealership mechanic they don't call them stealerships for nothing . I have a 7 year extended warranty which so far has saved me zero dollars on repairs . The service manager never called them EVER

I definitely agree, I only use Top Tier gasoline, not bunk hole in the wall gasoline. My Parent's got a 17 Escape FWD with the 1.5L Ecoboost at just under 33,000 miles. The Coolant level is normal, no issues whatsoever, and the 19B37 PCM software update was completed around 23,000 miles. It is covered under CSP 21N12 until November 29, 2023. I am wondering if there is any economical test, evaluation, or other indicators available to reveal if this will leak Coolant soon to qualify for a short block replacement? I imagine that running it through a long pressure test wouldn't be cheap. Thank you!

Lots of water in cheap fuel. The ethanol attracts water and then you've got a problem. Use good fuel and keep the tank 1/2 full or better. Add gas line anti freeze in winter to control water.

All my cars are over 20 years old - 91 ethanol free for all of them (hurts when I fill up the suburban) but all cars start and purr hot or cold. Fuel is VERY important and really, 5-6 bucks each time you fill up isn't going to kill you but some emmission equipment that fouls will...

A friend of mine used to work for a local gas station that made her use an entire roll of paper towels to soak up the water leaking into the tanks every time there was a delivery. Needless to say water still got into the fuel and the place just didn't care.

Thats why I only go to a few well known fuel stations, that I know have great fuel quality. I'm always willing to pass a few of the small gas stations to get to a known better one. I know one of small gas stations in my town waters down their gas.

I'm not sure if it matters which gas station you go to. I know that one offs are not the best. But if you've had good luck in the past with them then it shouldn't be a problem. 2 stories. Back in the 80's it was late on Sunday and I needed gas to get to work on Monday morning. The only station opened was a big change station. So I paid the extra and drove home. The next morning I start up the car and back out of the drive. It dies in the street. Roll it back in the drive on the starter. After the sun comes up. I find no fuel in the carb. Put a 60 watt light bulb in the fuel pump and go inside. Car starts up I put in a can of dry gas and drive the tank tills it's below half and refill at my usual station. The other story. Right next to the Ford dealer. Big chain gas station. Somehow diesel was put in the gas storage tanks. Dealer made a bunch of money cleaning fuel systems.

If they got water, call the dept of environment, they are getting water in their tank, or they got fuel when they were getting the tank refilled at the station.. They will have to lock that station down.

The new Bronco sport has a 1.5 eco-boost engine. Think it's going to have the same coolant intrusion issue or is the problem fixed on newer blocks?

Is there no authority that checks fuel quality? Maybe the guy kept fuel in a rusty drum and it got contaminated?

Hey Rich, If you were buying a F150 2WD truck that was 5-10 years old what engine would you be looking for for the most reliability. I have gotten 508,000 miles out of my old 2002 with a 4.2L with no major problems. I know none of the newer stuff will be that reliable, but I am looking for the most reliable one I can get.

Which gas station brands have the best gas?

I got a question Ford boss , 2010 Ford F-150 , the concern was SCRAPING type noise when turning right , I replace the wheel bearing/hub and the iwe ,and the check valve , but is still making the scraping noise. Any idea what it could be ?

I need to find a dealer like yours. I have complained about my truck randomly down shifting out of no where, asked 2 dealers to do a transmission service and reflash the computer(got a recall for transmission) they both said I would have to pay for the reflash and there was no recall. And they both said I didnt need a transmission service not enough miles. It only has 60k on a 2012 F150. Who's cares if I want the service. I prefer over maintenance than not enough maintenance.

I own a BMW MINI and a Mercedes. They both require 91 Octane gasoline so I have never encountered this problem. I have a friend who works at an oil refinery and he told me that the cheap gas is purchased by the chain convenience stores found nation wide. I personally purchase Chevron or its equivalent.

have you had a flywheel break yet? we just had a 2018 fusion 1.5 eco. it came in making a horrible noise. we couldn’t tell if it was top or bottom. so we pulled the oil pan of and saw the flywheel was in two pieces.

Is it true that with 2013 ford taurus for you are having erratic fuel reading that best thing to use is the chevron with techron plus due to the corrosion on the sending unit journal on the fuel pump module? Cluster has been replaced due to the left screen going out as well as fuel pump module before warranty ran out.

I prefer my Top Tier fuel from Costco, not only Top Tier but I can get the extra ponies putting 93 in for the same price as others charge for 87! My Escape shifts cleaner since I switched too
