Driven Car Reviews With Tom Voelk

Күн бұрын

The fourth generation Honda CR-V was the most popular S.U.V. sold in the U.S. during 2016. Generation 5 won’t make it any easier for the competition. Tom Voelk reviews the Honda CR-V Touring model.
This is a fixed version of the video. Sorry for those who had their comments disappear!
Also, if you've ever wondered how the TP Trunk Test came to be, check out the end of this video.
About Tom:
Tom Voelk is an award-winning automotive contributor to The New York Times. His podcast was the first to win an Emmy Award. He also married way out of his league. Now, stop reading this promotional copy bragging about Tom's photography and editing skills and watch a couple episodes. It's much more interesting.

People don't understand the value of those new safety features. My wife argued how I wasted money getting those features in our crossover (16 mkx ). But was very happy on our trip to Canada when we all passed out and the car pulled us back on the road and started buzzing to wake me up.

Yup, while most of us believe we are awesome drivers (and I know everyone here is of course) but it just takes that one instance or boneheaded move to put a life in danger. Now, get to a Tim Horton's and get yourself a cup of coffee Carey.

If you get enough sleep before you start driving, take enough breaks when you're behind the wheel and don't drive when you're normally sleeping (i.e. the middle of the night), there's really no reason you should "pass out" behind the wheel. It's when people try to drive for hours and hours on end without resting that they end up getting into accidents. I'm older than you are and I've never fallen asleep behind the wheel because I know when to stop driving and call it a day. Like Clint Eastwood used to say "A man's got to know his limitations".

Yes, I've heard that's true. I know he and his wife have been very generous to Seattle Children's Hospital for starters. My wife went to his house for a fundraiser once. He comes to the Costco where I do my shoots often (warehouse #1) but I have always missed him. Never really had the chance to say thanks for accommodating my goofy (but effective) test.

Different strokes. My wife bought a 2017 exl. She loves it. She's had CRV's since 1997. We're in our late 50's and early 60's. The CRV is everything we could have wanted. Great for her morning commute. Great for cross country. Went from Kansas to South Dakota. Loved it.

The styling changes may seem subtle, but to my eye this is the 1st CR-V brawny enough that dads wouldn't refuse to be seen driving it without passengers. I'm legitimately shocked at the tasteful conservative style of the cabin, too.

i always say, just ask, the worst is they say "no". i always say "please" and "thank you" (sometimes "thank you very much"), please and thank you are the social "lubricant" in this world. i think the supervisors at my new job notice me because i say "thank you" for the smallest thing they do. Tom, you're the perfect gentleman, Costco couldn't resist! LOL thank you for these fine videos :)

The Honda CR-V upgrade to EX makes a lot of sense, when I was at the dealer, they kept pushing the LX model on me most likely because Honda realized they couldn't sell the LX's. I insisted on the EX because of the safety features (and sunroof I'll admit) and already payed off when someone went into my lane quickly without warning the SUV braked urgently without jolting me and the missus.

This review has so much good information. 1) Real MPG - 375 miles averaging 28 MPG @ 75 mph. I figure my long trips up the Columbia river gorge would yield similar results. 2) Costco - because bags of bark at home depot are too heavy. 3) It did ok when it snowed (I live in Portland). Great review and thanks!

In your estimation, Tom, how important is Apple Carplay and Android Auto? I've been looking at Acura (MDX, RDX) and Toyota HIghlander, none of which have the feature, and it doesn't appear that they will anytime soon. I'm wondering if I should just save some money and get the CRV. It seems to have it all.

I'm an iPhone guy so I don't know Android Auto. I like CarPlay a lot, it simplifies the use of basic functions of the phone like music and navigation. None of my personal cars have it. In those vehicles I find "hey Siri" works pretty when I need to send a message, get directions, or dial a phone number. Only you can tell if it's something that's needed. At the very least, it's a great tie breaker. And let me be clear, I highly recommend putting the phone down and driving. For the most part, I put the phone in the center console, close the lid and leave it there until I reach my destination. But I know others can't seem to fathom how dangerous staring at a phone while driving can be. For that reason, I wish Android Auto and CarPlay (or similar interfaces) were standard.

I'd trade the radio volume knob for a real, old-fashioned speedometer and tachometer. I'm not liking that horizontal tach and digital speedometer at all! I might even try to buy a leftover 2016 model rather than live with the redesigned dash on the 2017. As for all the nanny features in the Honda Sensing package, spend $35 for a defensive driving course and make yourself a better driver, rather than spending 4 figures on tech features that do the things you should be doing yourself when you're behind the wheel. I haven't had any of those things on any car I've owned, and I haven't had an accident in over 30 years now. I enjoy watching your reviews!

The Japanese makers have been really been slacking for the past few generations, but I'm certainly glad to see Toyota and Honda (even Subaru, in some regards) really giving it their all this time around. The outgoing CR-V wasn't bad, but I personally believe this to be the best generation to date. I still think vehicles like the Honda HR-V and Toyota CH-R are terrible mistakes (and yes, I would know, I drive an HR-V EX-L w/ Navi - it was an impulse buy), but one or two bad apples won't make a big difference in the grand scheme of things. Heck, I wouldn't mind a CR-V like this in a few years, I just hope that manufacturers won't push their new "safety" and driver assistance technologies to the point where I won't be able to drive w/o interruption from the thing. Great review, Tom! Have a good one!

Given how far Yota designers have been straying from "tradition" in car design, I can't imagine them building a truly competitive vehicle to the CR-V this time around. I've had a fair few runs with this generation of RAV4, and have been immensely disappointed time and time again. From styling, to overall refinement, it's all been rather lackluster. It's gonna take a lot, in my opinion.

I'm trying to decide between the CRV and the Accord. It baffles me why Honda offers the Honda Sensing package on the CRV but you have to add the navigation package to get it on their flagship car, the Accord. Doesn't even come on the EX-L trim package. I really don't get that and it's making me lean toward the CRV, even after driving Accord for 25 years
@TechGently
@TechGently 7 жыл бұрын
I can sort of understand Honda's thinking. So I had a nav package on another car, and while driving towards route 5, it was closed from 210 to 5. Had I had an updated map, I would have seen that, so I found myself using Google Maps more and Nav less. Honda came up with the integration of Android Auto/Apple Carplay and it works much better, always updated, always steers you right. Included on EX and higher.

I took your advice and went to the nearest Mazda dealer recently. They had just received the first 2017 CX5, and wow, it is Lexus looking in the front! The flow of the lines is much nicer than the CRV (which already is selling well). There are no bad choices among the all the Japanese brands...I will continue my evaluations and decide in the 4th quarter which one to purchase.

Honda screwed it up by only offered the 2.4 liter in the LX. Other model only available with a crap turbo engine. So, I traded my 2014 CRV-LX AWD for a 2018 RDX AWD with V-6 engine, no CVT either. Unfortunately, they also screwed up the RDX by offering only turbo and CVT in 2019. My RDX with 279 HP only cost $4,000 more than a CRV Touring.

Lousy job from honda: - ugly shape, no harmony - outdated LCD screens - cheap plastic all over - no seat ventilation - 1.5l engine! Japenese cars started to look worse and worse. See lexus with the huge front grill. And no, it is not totally subjective :)
