This is a small documentary made to show events of Hurricane Harvey and this all time historic flood of 2017 San Jacinto River. Harvey had a huge impact on Houston, but really had a major impact on the Kingwood / Humble area.

This video doesn't communicate that the back of Kingwood, where the most severe flooding occurred, was largely spared after Harvey itself. The San Jacinto River Authority released water from the dam in Conroe without telling anyone who lived downstream. Our home was spared, but our neighbors who didn't flood during the storm received 10 feet of water in their homes. We knew people who barely escaped with the belongings they could carry before their home was completely engulfed and carried away by the flood. They lost everything, and they lived more than a mile from the river, where flooding should have been minimal. Some of the damage was storm-related, and some was negligence. According to a report from 2019, Lake Conroe had already peaked and could have risen another 3 feet before the river authority needed to release water for safety reasons. The scuttlebutt was that prominent people who had vacation homes on Lake Conroe (Did you know that Dan Patrick has a house there?) didn't want to risk the possibility of minor flooding.

Omg... I know that area. I live there. (I'm only 13) I remember whenever it stopped raining, my dad took my family and drove to the bridge on top of the San Jacinto river. Everything was covered by water, it was so high that some of the tallest signs were close to being fully covered. In the thumbnail, that's the area where we go out to eat a lot. One of the restaurants, Joe's Crab Shack, never opened back up from the flood. It took almost a year for everything to be opened back up there. And even so, people today are still trying to rebuild. In school, hearing the phrase "Did you get flooded?" Is normal. Luckily, I was one of the few families who didn't.

This is overwhelming to watch.. at 4:28 that was my home, or what was left of what’s standing next to the red truck. That’s forest cove townhomes where I looked around and see remnants from my life and toys that my daughters squeezed tight at night. I can only thank God for pushing me to move my family the night before and putting so much pressure on my heart to let me know that this was not a safe place to stay.

The developers and builders should be required to build 6 feet higher on either man made hills or stilts in this area, since nobody cares about topology or surveys. It's a river basin...and it will happen again, and it will come from the Lake Conroe Dam. Watch.

Luckily for me, me immediate area wasn’t flooded, but just about all surrounding areas were. I’m just glad it wasn’t an electrical storm and we didn’t lose power.

And he isn't kidding, we had 3ft of water in our home, and rescue was like... seriously, wasn't till it finally got to about 8 feet that they dispatched a crew to pull us of our roof, the problem was that while our home only had about 3ft of water when this started getting bad, our driveway was so much lower than our home, both vehicles were already flooded completely, but I've got to say, these men and women were absolutely amazing.

Very nice thank you. Sort of hard to watch as my home was in that flooded forest. I could go on for another 10,000 or so characters about how wonderful people were. I had dozens of strangers, all from the local churches, helping me demo my walls, tear up my floors and haul out furniture, appliances and debris. Every day people were bringing us food, water & cleaning supplies. People from as far away as Louisiana drove over with those cooking trailers and made thousands of pounds of food right there in the old HEB parking lot and just giving it away to people who walked up. No one sat on the curb crying and waiting for the government to come help them. We all just got bust and did what needed to be done. These were all just people there to help mainly organised by the localchurches. No government was there and all the Red Cross did was come by and ask how deep the water got in the area. I would also like to say that the FEMA process worked flawlessly for me. I was very, very impressed. The thing is, you have to be proactive. You can't wait for them to do it all for you. While this situation really devestated me and my family, I did get to see the good side of humanity. To all of those who helped me, THANK YOU!

Our home in Kingwood got flooded with 4 1/2 feet of water during Harvey. I was amazed at the rapid response of neighbors in getting effective help to those of us who were flooded out. It was a powerful reminder to me that the ideological and political differences that separate us can evaporate in the face of obvious need from neighbors. I will be forever grateful to those selfless people who came with tools, water, food, and strong backs to sweat and bleed with us in those first days. I wish we were as good at seeing the needs of people whose everyday lives are filled with the same kind of hopelessness and desperation. I can't recommend it as a way to meet people, but you meet some of the best people in times like that.

I live in Huffman and I couldn't leave my apartment because Harvey had flooded both ends of where I was. It flooded the competition gym at my school and flooded the restaurant not even a block away from where I was. It was traumatizing to see the neighborhood down the street because all the cars were lined up on the tiny hills alongside the road, the houses were being emptied and all you could see were just gallons and gallons of water rushing through the doors and windows. It took people months to get their house fixed. To this day, people are still trying to get their house together. It's completely ridiculous and yet traumatizing at the same time.

I lived less than 15 minutes away from Addicks Reservoir, it was horrible watching the news while they needed boats to get those people out of their homes... Once Clay Rd opened, i saw the aftermath. The way the air smelled afterwards was saddening, seeing the belongings of people out on the side was heartbreaking. Not because materialistic things matter, but because they had to go through that! Also, going through Clay Rd the very first time it opened, I saw a red car stranded, with the trunk wide opened, I can't imagine what they went through!!

...and to this day, nothing at the lake Conroe dam 20 miles northwest of Kingwood has changed in it's operations for the San Jacinto river purge. My house in Kingwood was under 18 feet of water in the 1994 release for 2 days and there was no warning, and it came overnight. We had less than an hour to swim out. 450 homes and businesses were submerged...and nothing came of it after years of denial and bickering from the San Jacinto River Authority and it's still that way today. I had flood insurance because we were told it was a flood "plain" in our contracts and it would get maybe a foot in a worse case. Found out it was a floodway and the homes weren't even supposed to be built there. Everyone lost everything and went away after years in court in favor of the builders and the city of Houstin who own the river rights. That's why the annexation of Kingwood was delayed until 1996...let the county take care of the mess, then come in and tax them 5 times more for less services and now subpar in every category. We tried to warn people. I tried to warn everyone it would happen again....nobody listened. It will happen again, and it will be worse. Most of the rain fell in the upper watersheds. Spring creek, cypress creek and many other watersheds flow into the West Fork of the San Jacinto and ALL converge right at the highway 59 bridge between Kingwood and Humble...as you can see in the video. Nothing is different except the fact there are 4 times as many people and 200,000 more homes and businesses that will get hit again in the future. And this time...the city will be involved in lawsuits alone, and maybe the dozens of sand mines that go all the way up the river...the ones that clear cut the forests and dump the fine sand silt into the river and fill it up....to a water level of just a few feet. It's not a river...it's a beach.

Amazing video, but it would have been nice to show other major parts of Houston that were flooded way more than kingwood. Which is the surburbs. I have lived in Houston all my life and I stayed in the downtown area. Which was flooded big time.

Markedrick Champion The video title implies footage would focus on the Kingwood area...search for "Downtown" if that is what you want to see....geez

Expensive homes that got flooded. You paid how much for your home in kingwood? Just to have it easily flooded? Pfft.
