MotoMan takes a second look at the Hyundai Sonata Plug In Hybrid (PHEV) sedan - but this time takes a bit more time to use the EV and HEV modes around town for more than a couple of days. In this new format, he takes the 2017 Hyundai Sonata Plug In Hybrid ‘around the block’ to share more in depth insight after our FIRST DRIVE REVIEW from last year and in the process provides both a prediction in the segment as well as a bit of a tour of the place we call home . . .

This is a very honest evaluation of the car and the best one I've seen. Thank you for taking the time to do a second one. I've had a 2016 Sonata Limited PHEV for about six weeks and after 650 miles, I still have 3/4 of the original tank of gas supplied by Hyundai. I am consistently get 30+ range all electric with 36 being the best. Obviously most of my driving is local, but with careful driving habits, there's no reason you shouldn't be able to get high 50s, low 60s mpg on a long trip. It ranks high in every measurable way and I'm extremely happy with my purchase. This car is an under-appreciated sleeper. With the tax credit and California rebate applied, the out-the-door price of a Limited right now is just over $30K. You can't come close to that with any other car on the market with this level of luxury, quality, safety, and content. I believe the reason the sun roof and and rear window shades were deleted from the PHEV was to save weight.
@RobertSimpson
@RobertSimpson 7 жыл бұрын
The reason the sun roof is not an option is to preserve the low coefficient of drag - 0.24, which is the same as the Tesla Model S.

I agree totaly with you because i think Hyundai continue making cars whith all the tecnology and quality like others brands but at a very much low cost, aniway i have an Azera and i love the hybrid Sonata you show in the video. And Thanks for continue making videos with normal cars for normal people not just super cars or extra luxury cars.

I currently have a 2015 Kia Optima SXL, and it's my favorite car I've owned yet (minus driving dynamics). I hope the Kia Optima Plug-In Hybrid has a sunroof. I'm with you on these cars being one of the best blends of options, affordability, ev range, and driving dynamics. Even though the range is 25-27 miles, I'm a little intrigued about the "charge mode" being able to charge the battery from 0-full in 30 min, because of the direct current. I can see myself using electric only mode around town, switching to ev charge mode when I hop on the highway, then getting off the highway with a full battery to continue the ev driving.

Any plan on reviewing BMW 330e soon? That car also has a geared transmission, similar EV range.

Very good review! I have been debating on purchasing a used 2017 Sonata PHEV. I would be replacing a 2009 Sonata with 206K miles. That car has been great, but I am looking at cost of fuel now. My main reason for searching out reviews was to see how the car operated in EV mode. I have found several really good reviews, but this was the best for showing the EV mode. Thank you for publishing this video!

I agree, I believe the future will be a combination of everything (with the exception of Hydrogen) … although I hope they did multiple full intelligent risk assessments before committing to Electric Power 100% in a frantic attempt to undo the diesel mess that Europe pushed towards heavily in the past few decades. However, I believe Highly efficient engines are the way to go. Aside from North America, Western Europe & China (& maybe the UAE) I don't think the rest of world will adapt Evs in their current forms … we are talking about hundreds of billions of dollars in investments to revamp everything. And if the power source is Coal stations… then we made things much worse. As always, excellent work M

I agree, it's great this looks like a normal car.. That's my biggest complaint with electrics. That 25 mile range though isn't so great It's a start towards getting more people used to EV driving

I'm definitely considering this car. The question is, do I wait for the Optima PHEV that's supposedly coming out at the end of this year?

The Bagsics Kia does not offer the same warranties and their quality is far inferior. Friends have reported their optima sport broke down twice driving from Tahoe to Sacramento. Mechanic friend was about to work on one as well and it caught on fire before it got to the repair. Would avoid Kia like a plague.

Hello MotoMan! I'm in a quandry! I have been looking at plug in hybrid sedans for a few months. We have about 12 KWh excess production every day from our solar panels. Want to buy a Plug in hybrid to utilize that free energy. Have been looking at the Sonata PHEV and a few others. Hyundai has that lifetime battery warranty that makes my eyes shine bright! Should it blind me to other brands? This is a car we will likely have for many years (10 at least!). What about price? Any inkling how the new ones will be priced? Right now (8/2018) there are still a few brand-new 2017 model year cars available at the dealerships and it seems they skipped the 2018 model year. "Soon" Hyundai says their 2019 version of Sonata PHEV will be coming out. Do you know if the new models will have the same battery/electric range as the 2017's? If I wait until the 2019's are out later this year, then the cars currently available will be gone. I have the opportunity to buy a BRAND NEW 2017 base model for approx $26K. Very discounted. Any advice?

Very cool that you have that excess power! As for your quandry - I would look at it two ways. FIRST: Forget about the warranty - which car do you want to drive? Yes, a warranty does play into it - especially for cars like an SRT Challenger or a Mercedes but for the types of cars you are looking at, they are mostly very reliable for a long time so you want to focus on what car do you really want to drive? From there, I would seriously consider a used model - maybe a year old. Let someone else take the biggest depreciation hit, but you still retain the majority of the warranty and drive the car you *want*. Good discussion.

Thanks for the info. I'm always leary of newly used cars...what is wrong with them that they dumped the car that quickly? What problem$$$ am I inheriting? Especially with a big PHEV battery that I'm not used to...I don't even know what to be worried about! Eek! And Hyundai's "lifetime battery warranty" is only good for the first owner, not subsequent owners, so if I'm buying Huyndai, it would be new. Any other brand I suppose I'd be open to used...

Good review Moto, thank you, but was the epa mileage numbers mentioned? How about the options that are available for this vehicle? The problem with this new Hyundai plug-in is that consumers are not going to give it much attention. That it's missing a sun roof is a start and other 'niceties' that people WANT in a car, not just great fuel economy. As you mentioned there are many vehicles that are getting excellent eps numbers, like Mazdas new offerings, and have all the options that make our cars our 'home away from home'. It's a shame really since in order to compete with say the upcoming Prius Prime you would need a very good argument- and the Hyundai Sonata Plug-in is too mediocre inside and out to take sales away from the competition.

I have the 5.0 ultimate AWD up here in Canada. Having owned a bunch of bmws (x3, x5, 335), I can appreciate how much better it is and even at a significantly lower price. I just wish it had cylinder deactivation, or auto start/stop, or coasting like the zf 8 speed, or even regenerative breaking would help. The v8 is so smooth and it just wants me to step on it, but the fuel economy! I certainly look forward to making it a hybrid! Thanks for the reply and keep up the good work

Gotta say . . . I'm a BIG fan of the Hyundai Genesis/Genesis G80 . . . One of the best values out there. Also, a great car to drive. Now that I have driven their V6 TT, I would say it is a more lively engine than the 420 HP V8.

they have the 3.3T engine as the top of the line in China, but I don't forsee it being offered in NA market anytime soon. I was hoping that gets paired with an electric drive train to form a hybrid. They should have the space to do it.

@rogergeyer9851

Mike: It depends on what you want. The Volt is a more battery centric car. You get a bigger battery, but it's more expensive than several of the PHEV's that are coming to market soon, and it's a GM, which Volt fanbois can say what they want, but there are real durability questions there. It can't be charged on a Level 1 (normal plug) outlet, as I understand it. And in hybrid mode, it's mileage is mediocre, in the upper 30 range. I'm awaiting the Toyot Prius Prime with 22 miles pure EV range expected, and over 50+ mpg in hybrid mode expected with over a 600 mile range in hybrid mode. It can be charged on a normal type one plug in under 6 hours. With the smaller (8.8 KW) battery, it should be cheaper than the Volt. It has the Toyota Prius' great quality reputation. So there's no one "right" answer. The exciting thing, IMO, is there are supposed to be a LOT of these things out in the next few years from a variety of makers, so lots of innovation, and lots of choices. Toyota and BMW are talking about lots of these, so there should be nice luxury options.

WILD styled car ? Look and feel of a NORMAL styled car? Phooey! Might as well go back to the boxes of the 70's. My wife and I are at the end of our lease on a 2013 HB limited. We love the style of the tail lights, the cockpit look and feel of the interior. The scarlet red exterior color and the light tan interior made my wife fall in love with Miss Scarlet at first sight. As she only drives 8 miles to work each day and a few weekend trips.We thought we would look into a newer model to lease for the next 3 years then purchase it at the end of the lease. We are totally disappointed with the style changes and colors available for the 2017 model. Guess we will purchase the 2013 we have now. We use the console display a lot and the new one is much smaller and cluttered. Guess we have to wait to see if Hyundai makes some future changes. Colors and reasons: White in winter in the North East is asking for a T bone accident. No one drives a Black car in the heat. Silver or gray blends in with the highway. Mist green is just plain YUCK! and who wants a white interior or dark blue with a white stripe? Guess we are just to fussy at ages 64 and 74 of what might be our last automobile together. That interior is a major step backward in my opinion. I guess we will have to forgo all the nifty new technical advances and keep what we like even if we can't plug it in. We have both waited all our lives to get futuristic styles and now this. Very disappointing.

25 miles in EV mode only? For $30-$40k? That's about the same as the BMW 330e. Would you pay the $10k price premium to get the luxury badge, interior, 40 more horsepower, and RWD?
