Just a note to say about riding visor "up" many years ago I did this on my bike only doing 40mph and a fly hit me square in the right eye . It detached my retina and I had a touch and go operation to save my eye fortunately it went well . Since then I always ride with the visor down or cracked open a bit covering my eyes

I ride with the visor down, too. I got hit in the shield with (I think) a bolt, and never needed to question the wisdom of riding any other way.

I would like to say I am glad your eyes are now ok and would just like to mention I ride a VTR1000F and find the screen directs bugs and objects into my eyes as well, and I too, have resorted to riding with the visor half open at least. I have also found the wind/bug deflection forces the laws of nature directly into my visor unless I sit back and tuck in a little under the screens protection. I will tell you a tale, I was 17 in the 80`s and riding my YAMAHA 125 lc mk2 at an indicated 90 mph when I saw a black object spinning towards me in what I can only call a KAMIKAZE flight path, It hit me with so much force I was momentarily stunned and it immediately made me close my left eye but my right eye then started to water in sympathy, when I slowly and steadily pulled over I looked in my mirrors and found I had been stung just below my eyeball! The WASP/BEE was a splashed mess on my forehead and cheek but as I glanced around I could feel the barb of the stinnger catching and indeed rubbing on my eyeball, I went to hospital and was told it was a bee sting and I was millimeters from LOOSING MY EYE:(

They're certainly not the most glamorous nor am I a big fan of their looks and colours, but as far as my experience with motorcycles goes, Kawasaki is the one brand that seems to always get it right. Best relative comfort in their respective categories, confidence inspiring, but most particularly... the engines. I find they manage to produce just the right balance of horsepower and torque to properly feel the acceleration (not getting at 200 without realising it or feeling a monstrous tractor push to accelerate 5 km/h) and they have a fun factor I hardly find on other brands where efficiency and linearity seem to be the credo of our time. They're the one brand that seems to understand riders the best and their bikes feel like a bike should feel.

Absolutely loved my Versys, took it over Stelvio, it loves the motorway cruise, reason for changing, im ODC with chains. Pain adjusting the chain on the O/S arm adjuster. Engine is just bullit proof and the gbox is the smoothest going. With full panniers it looks great, they upped the disc by 10mm to 310mm and fitted a slipper clutch amongst other tweaks. MPG not as good as the GS i was getting 54 mpg. i fitted a larger front sprocket to mine better for motorway cruise grand machine though.

Mine's been great. Wish they'd put a drive shaft on it though. Love that aftermarket pipe. Looks so much smaller and it isn't annoyingly loud. A few niggles I had were: 1. Windshield too small for pillion. Aftermarket to the rescue. 2. Grips are too skinny for me. Thank you Grip Puppy. 3. I found Full Power mode rather jerky. I left it in Rain mode most of the time until I got a Power Commander with a proper map. Now unless I'm riding it off road, it stays in Full Power mode. 4. Lowered it front and rear an inch. Front was just dropping the trees on the forks. Used a link at the rear. At least two mfgs make good products for this. Best part is, no suspension travel was harmed in the making of my midget bike. 5. Put a bash plate on it to protect the oil filter off road. 6. Shad provided a much cheaper and slightly larger top box. 7. Added highway pegs to stretch out the legs on longer rides. 8. Rebuilt the seat with Seat Concepts foam and cover. Firmed it up a bit. Stocker wasn't too bad, but it seemed like a fun project. Came out nice. My initial set of rotors was warped and replaced under warranty at 13k miles. Bike now has > 36k miles. New brakes have been fine as has everything else. Had the valves checked twice. Yet to have one out of spec. Bang for the buck it's among the best. If you need a slick cellphone dash with integrated kitchen sink, this ain't it. But the bones of the bike are solid. Funny thing about riding modes. On this one on the road, I'm like you, set and forget. On my Thruxton, I change them quite a bit. When it's cold out, the Thruxton gets really jerky in Sport and even Road mode. Rain mode feels really good to me. Makes it feel more like an older twin. Much easier to corner hard without the jerky throttle. When it's warm, Road mode works really well. Sport mode can still be a bit much to keep things smooth, though it's nice on the highway. I use a throttle lock so I don't get a lot of herky jerky, but it pours on the power quick of I need to overtake someone.

Shaft drive mmmmmm .... also an under engine exhaust like the 650 versys. It would get rid of that ugliness.

Hi Andy, Finally subscribed, after enjoying your channel for the last 4 years Your excellent review was instrumental in helping me to buy a used MY13 V1000, replacing a faithful old V-Strom 650 As a serial monogamist bike owner, it was paramount to choose wisely. After 2 years and 25,000km, the 'Ugly Duckling' is a real hoot. We have a blast between lockdowns, touring here in Oz. I'm a middle-aged rider, whose 6'6" frame unfortunately excludes many excellent bikes. The 'big bike' comfort, performance, reliablity and fuel range suit me perfectly. Thanks again, mate

A great review as always, I decided to go back to some of your old reviews and this stood out as I think this is an underrated bike. Although there have been some big updates with the Versys, all be it, the engine has remained the same, it’s interesting to see your view on this version, as a 6 year old one really is good value for money. It’s a credit to Kawasaki that they have continued with the same engine, which really gives you an indication on the reliability. It would be interesting to see your thoughts on the new current SE version which was updated in 2021. 👍🏼

Owned one of these for 18 months, was a great reliable bike, did loads of touring on it. Those MCN lads must have been really thrashing their machine as my bike got over 50MPG uk with a 200 + mile range from its 22L tank. If you go for the panniers they fit neatly into the existing seat base cut outs; no need for ugly frames and very neat. Don't agree on the screen, I found I got loads of turbulence but I am 6'3" tall. A Givi airflow screen is a great fix. Its certainly a great do it all bike but if you tour with someone on the new 1200 BMW GS they will gap you out of the corners with their torque and low down grunt.

Nice one TMF. I have a GT spec (2016) and as you know I have some connection with the brand. First off the comfort factor is as you say very good, I managed Maidenhead to Abergavenny non-stop, all off motorway, over 2 hours. Fuel consumption with 'average' riding, ie not revving the tits off it, is consistently 50/51mpg with a range of ~180miles. The clock has UK as well as US gallon setting so you need to make sure it's in the right mode! Major positive is value for money in my mind but there are a few quirks I have found in my 8000 miles. First off, the OE fitment tyres are awful; unpredictable and tend to make the bike run wide. Swap em asap for the aftermarket compound Bridgestones and enjoy a transformed ride. There is also a high frequency vibe through the seat on my bike, and the ones I test rode, it comes in at 6000rpm; with brisk acceleration you go through it very quickly and at constant throttle, 6000rpm is well above the UK national speed limit anyway. Finally, I would have liked a gear indicator as standard, it was only available as an accessory. All in all, very happy with it and planning on a trip to Spain next year!

I have one myself now going on 3 months... Love it! Recommend a better windscreen and the color-matched top box (Givi). Bike is amazingly smooth and wide powerband. Kawasaki really did a nice job bringing down the powerband to lower RPM's from the high-rev Ninja this motor was taken from. It runs smooth and powerful anywhere below 5k RPM. First gear is a bit low, IMO, and you quickly go into second gear. Easy to start in second gear too. I used to have a 2007 Suzuki V-Strom (v-twin) that would put my hands to sleep with its buzzy feel, but this Versys 1000 is so smooth, no problems with buzzy vibrations putting hands to sleep (numb). Also, the seat on the V1K is far better than the one on the Versys 650. Wish it was more cupped like a custom seat, but not bad, and the passenger seat is one of the best factory seats out there, IMO. Finally, I love the Candy Lime Green color and the lines. Looks like a praying mantis or some other predatory insect. I call mine, "The Green Goblin."

Hay TMF, Versys 1000 is an awesome bike and like you say perhaps overlooked. Regards the weight/height, I'm around your size and found mine no problem riding solo ... but a handful at slow speeds when two up, so I'd encourage people to try them with a pillion ! I dropped mine at slow speed with the wife on the back in Switzerland (both ok) so I've now changed to a Z1000SX, that enables me to get my feet flat on the floor ! I'm missing the Versys round the bumpy twisty back roads where it was a real force to contend with and shafted a lot of "sportier" bikes. That said, get a ride of the new Z1000sx as it's a proper weapon for covering miles fast, and remarkably "upright".

Blade Motorcycles, previously known as Honda Abingdon - I liked that Honda used to insist on single manufacturer franchises, but understandable why they've relaxed their position. The single dipped beam headlight on my old 2004 Fireblade drove me to distraction - eventually found out that the reason is simply design: reflector for the dipped beam is different to full beam. To get both sides to operate at dipped and full beam poses challenges with spread and bulb heat therefore life (both sides require two bulbs adjacent to each other). So I guess they just did it that way for functional/cost and reliability - not to mention that Ducati started doing this on the 916 so everyone probably thought it was cool 😎 back in the day.. .

Another great review sir. I have a ZZR1400 you should try one of those. The 14 does have 2 headlights on when on dip, however I have read somewhere that a bike with 2 lights on at dip can look like a car that is far away. So maybe a safety thing?

Very happy with the ZZR1400, I've toured the UK & made a few trips from the UK to Germany where I think the 14 is really good, especially when your on the Autobahn and there is no speed limit! I've only done relatively short trips two-up, so I can't comment what it would be like full on touring with a passenger.

I had to chop in my SX because 'er indoors found it torture on the back, even after as little as half an hour. If the Versys had had 140bhp I'd have had one in a minute but a just couldn't bring myself to drop 22 break ... so I added 22 break instead and got a S1000XR. I love the BM but I'd still prefer my SX if I had a free choice.

Had a go on a 2017 Versys 1000 the other day. Super competent and an excellent all-rounder but if anything, a bit boring and as we all know, we don't buy bikes with our heads alone but rather with our hearts... The Versys simply can't cut the mustard! Btw, a Harley Review would be awesome. Great job as always! Thanks.

I do like the looks of the big Versys, but as others have pointed out (including your good self) it is just a shame it does not have shaft drive. Nonetheless, I am still keen on them. In future reviews of chain drive machines, could you possibly mention how many miles as a rule between chain adjustment?

@@TheMissendenFlyer That’s a bit of a shame Andy. Kawasaki UK should really reconsider their policy in that respect. I for one take a channel like yours really seriously. I’m looking into getting another bike (sports touring as it’s being called nowadays) and the Versys is on my shortlist. If a motorcycle isn’t featured on your channel it at least drops a place. The other two contenders are the S1000XR and Tracer 9GT. But my gut tells me the Versys might be better suited for my style of riding (which is a lot like yours). Nevertheless, thanks for all the effort you put into your videos. I really enjoy it;-))

Just rode both of these (the DL 1000 V-Strom and Versys 1000) this morning and I am in agreement with you - the Versys is a better bike all round I think, but chiefly for me was the engine. A big four seems to suit the style of bike more than a big twin? It's a long way from you but I went to P&H Motorcycles in Crawley - they're franchised for Suzuki, Yamaha, KTM, Kawazaki, Honda and Ducati.

Hi Mr flyer. I've had both kinds of dual headlights. It really is pros and cons. Single light on will be an h7 globe which is a more efficient output than the h4 found in dual lights. They should last longer and put less strain on the alternator on low beam. The big difference at night is that you get low beam shape and high beam over the top of that meaning more light in the closer range. Again pros and cons. With an upgraded globe set I'm very OK with h7 on my tdm900.

Thanks for an excellent review. Having owned the SV 650 and 1000, I haven't been tempted by a V-Strom in either size. Both were slow handling and feel quite dated compared to a modern bike and I have no doubt the Strom does as well. The Versys on the other hand looks to be quite modern and fit. Glad also to see that it has a removable tailsection, so many bikes in this class do not. I have had the misfortune to bend these on occasion and they are much nicer to replace with bolts than welds as well as making the bike easier to service.

For the price, you can't beat it. At this point I am looking at this bike for a 2up weekend tourer, maybe longer. It has everything you would need with out complicating the works. I still can't justify getting a BMW, KTM, Triumph, ducati etc... I would say the only thing this bike is missing would be cruise control. For being a "Sport commuter/tourer" I think that would need to be a must.

I think one of the reasons why you may only want one of the dual headlights on is that if you have them both on and you're driving at night, you might look like a far away car to someone at a side street and they could pull out on you.
