MotoMan drives the 2017 Kia Niro to demonstrate something Kia calls a Hybrid Utility Vehicle. Technically, it’s a tall compact car with a hybrid propulsion system. However, MotoMan drives it very hard as well as experiences some of rural Texas while trying to understand Kia’s logic in engineering the Niro. Along the way, he relates the importance of construction to driving dynamics of this first ever Kia hybrid HEV . . .

Tomorrow (4/23), hubby and I are buying a Kia Niro. We looked and test drove a bunch of cars before narrowing it down to either the Rav4 Hybrid or the Niro. Granted, the Niro is smaller but sitting inside cabin feels about the same as the Rav4. We're also losing the AWD of the Rav4 - but if I'm being honest, we probably won't even NEED the AWD. So the decision came down to fuel economy and cost for the options we wanted. To us, there was no contest. For the options package we wanted, we're looking at about $9k less and about 15-20mpg MORE than the Rav4. Both are attractive cars and we enjoyed our test drives of each, but we feel like we're getting so much more on the standard options with the Kia than with the Rav4. Thank you for these very indepth reviews! Very thorough and helpful :D

I purchased my Niro almost a week ago. It is a comfortable C segment vehicle with some utility which is perfect for a small family or in my case a personal sized station wagon. The safety features are phenomenal. I choose the touring model because of it's feature content. I have everything Kia offers on my Niro. It includes the wireless charger, HID headlights and the safety suite. I feel the Niro is perfectly sized, content rich and fairly sporty. Of course, the gas mileage is great and the information supplied by the Niro's on-board systems is highly useable. The auto screams quality. That is why I choose it over the Mercedes GLA 250. Why pay $10,000 more for a name?

William Carter this is very helpful! I'm waiting to pick mine up next week and I also chose the Touring. It's nice to know I made a good decision, kind of hard to know when it's the first year of release for a vehicle! Thanks for sharing! I'm even more excited now!

Silver Gt just over $33,000 (Canadian), but I also had a trade-in. The listed price was just over $32,000 before all our lovely tax.

I was fortunate enough to sit in a Niro yesterday. My initial impressions without driving it is I love it. However, it's really not a CUV it's a 5 door hatchback. It's ever so slightly smaller than a Dodge Caliber. Regardless, it's a great size car for hauling all your weekend gear and toys but small enough that you're not driving a big SUV the other 5 days of the week. The interior is a bit bland but nicely laid out. My biggest complaint is the lack of padding on the door panels, they are a big sheet of hard plastic. The base model will offer a ton of tech for the money and the best MPGs. Overall I plan to retire my 2007 Subaru Forester in 2018 and I will heavily be considering the Niro (plug-in) as my next car. It's the perfect match of bang for buck, size and fuel economy I've been looking for.

I drove this, the Prius, prime, rav 4 hybrid, bolt, and had a Volt. I bought this. Only thing I don't like is that since I wanted parking sensors I had to get a sunroof and bigger rims. I drove about 150 miles with one quarter of the gas tank so I'm satisfied. I think I could easily get 50+ with the smaller rims.

I think the Niro is a perfect size for what most of us need as a daily driver. It's too bad they couldn't squeeze out about 51 mpg on this baby at this price point. Now that would be the bomb. Nice hat by the way.

Thanks very much for the reply.... I've been watching your Hyundai hybrid reviews. I like the blue link feature, which addresses one of the question HVAC. And, I "hear" what you mean about AWD. Very helpful.

I love this package combo of utility and economy. The only thing I might want, but isn't a deal breaker, is an AWD system, perhaps through electric motors like the Rav4. As of this moment, this is quite likely my next vehicle.

In Canada my EX Niro gets 4l/100 Km, or 70 mpg (with our imperial gal size) It took a few months to master how to get the most out of this set up. It is underrated really. I have also used the sport mode in the mountains and pushed it really hard and had much fun keeping the Audi A6 from passing me. I have carried some large furniture items and 8ft pcs of lumber in it. So I go 966km on small tank but can drive it hard and carry a ton of stuff. Its ability to wear 3 masks is the reason I bought it. Its 2 years old without 1 single problem or defect.

Hi, During the last 3 or years my questions about a eco vehicle was " Humm Yeah I would like a EV one but because I only have one vehicle, I also need something that can do long range occasionally". The incoming pluggable Niro seem to me a solution.Have a in a single car a EV mode for small distance and a hybrid mode for longer trip. In addition the prix vs equipements is still good and the warranty too.

I bought one in June 2017. Touring model. With tax out the door at 33k. Live in SW Washington across the bridge from Astoria, Oregon. I am close to 10k miles. Been driving 12hr road trips to Reno, NV. lately. Here are my negative issues: 1. The rear window due to the spoiler setup in always dirty along with the entire back of the car. 2. Suspension is a bit soft. I find it leans when cornering that is uncomfortable. The Niro feels like it's built for 55 miles an hour. Hummm maybe so, that's not all bad. The positive's: 1. I like the look of the car. It's clean, sleek and positive. 2. It's roomy. I never feel like I don't have room. I'm a big little fat guy 250lbs. Seats fit me well, controls within reach. Everything I need or expect is there. It just works great. 3. Fuel is better than 43-43mpg. when I pay attention to the road and vehicle's driving characteristics. I have hit 65mph on a 2hr trip.

I was going to wait for the ev because I prefer driving in ev mode. But I don't know if I'll have access to a plug next year and electricity in San Diego save you as much versus gas prices right now. Cheapest rate is 17 cents per kw I think. So I'd save maybe $200-$250 a year. It would be interesting if the plug in was an e-awd.

If the base Kia Niro really gets about 50 MPG then they are going to sell a ton of these. And yeah, I have to admit I'm putting this on a very short list of cars I may actually buy.

I'm unsure if the following 2 questions have been written about, so I'd like to bring these questions of mine regarding future features to the table. I live in Southwestern PA and that puts these points high on my list that I see as currently lacking. 1. Yes, fuel economy would be impacted, but is there an AWD/4WD possibly in the works? 2. We have many cold mornings, in addition to ice and snow traction; is there an after-market or perhaps even a KIA option for remote starting, so the vehicle's interior can be warmed and at the same time begin the process of defrosting the windows. What would go along with questions 2, is; many controls for the interior climate are electronic. So, are KIA's environmental controls able to be set manually, allowing for the heater and defroster to engage once the vehicle is remote started. Thank you for the great review; I look forward to any insight you have.

Can't comment about HVAC as I was in Texas and didn't test those features. As for AWD, currently nothing on offer. When prompted, Kia didn't flat out say no, but gave the party line of 'We're looking for feedback'. To me? That translates as: If people are willing to pay US$1000 or more for AWD, we'll do it. If not, no dice.

Oh, how I wish car companies would get over the notion that "wagon" is a vulgar slang word. This is NOT a crossover! Even Subaru has found a way to give you all-wheel-drive AND a hybrid powertrain. This is a Hybrid Wagon; one that competes with the Toyota Prius V and Ford C-Max (and is better than both of them!) All-wheel-drive, not plug-in capability, is what's needed here, but I could still see buying one of these beauties! And thank you for pointing out just how ugly and useless the Ford C-Max is; especially if the Escape was still available as a hybrid! Big mistake, Ford. HUGE EPIC FAILURE!

I just ordered a 2018 Niro Touring, and I agree about the "wagon" thing. I would probably classify the Niro as a wagon, not a crossover. I have no issue with that. In fact, it's exactly what I was looking for. Bigger than a hatchback car, but smaller than a true crossover SUV. A wagon is perfect for my needs, and I don't really care that there seems to be a negative connotation to that word these days. I'm excited for my new wagon to get here!!!

Good all around balanced design. This reminds me of the 2009 Kia Sorento. I would trade my 2014 Rogue for this. I think the Rogue is bloated while this is a more athletic with smarter design choices. Based on my experience of owning both Kia and Nissan. I can say that Kia/Hyundai build quality is higher than Nissan and Toyota. Here's a simple question. Why can't they make these type of vehicle size much longer with third row seating and stick sliding doors and call it a day(MPV). I don't need it to be minivan or big SUV/CUV heights with 8 seats. How about two well sized second captain row seats and two in the third row and still have a good size trunk for things that a normal family with 2-4 kids would haul around (stroller/groceries). It's either an over size minivan/SUV or a CUV with cramped seats. All BTW have similar mpg. I don't understand their research/marketing logic. Having two captain seats row wouldn't require the vehicle to be so wide and heavy thus a space between the seats to move towards the back. This is BTW is coming from a person with kids and extended family. Blahhh... this getting me all worked up. ;) Cheers

It is hard to get good fuel mileage in a tall car. Mixing utility with good fuel milage and ride comfort is the holy grail . If you need more cargo capacity from time to time then rent it. The plug in hybrid is a must and should have an EV range of 35 to 50 miles! I love the EV drive feel. I will wait for the plug in model. Can you tow a small trailer with this car?

Based on the 29,500 EV price of the Ioniq, the PHEV version of the Niro after tax credit could be close to the price of the Hybrid. That would make it attractive. An EV version is rumored for 2018. And possibly a second model with a larger battery with more(200+) range like Tesla does should be coming based on Ioniq rumors. Those would make for a nice lineup.

I own a 1016 Kia Soul as my daily driver, & I might consider trading this for a Kia Niro or a Chevy Bolt, as the anti-thesis to my Mustang GT! The Crosstrek hybrid is kinda pointless with negligible mpg gains. The RAV4 & Rogue hybrids are still under consideration. I've owned Mazda & Honda hatchbacks, so I have a soft spot for hatches/wagons. I think compact crossovers need at least 200 hp to be meaningful.
