I have a 2018 Chevy Bolt in Canada and I had similar results before the battery change. I estimated around 8% degradation after 4 years/146k km. With the new battery, now I have negative degradation 🤣 It is just sad that the fast charge is so slow. In Canada you can't sell electricity by the kWh, so the price is by the charge time. So, letting the car plugged for a long time is expensive. And the charge rate is even worse when the battery is cold, sometimes I can't get more than 17kW when the battery is less than 30%. And the battery heater takes forever. In cold weather (-15C, -20C) the battery heater will stop at 15C and the fastest charge rate is at 20C, at the car charge so slow the battery cannot reach 20C.. Don't do a Geilo test! Otherwise if you don't mind the seats and you don't need to fast charge the car often, it can be a good deal use (even more with the new battery)

Hello Björn, I really like your content. One of the best in KZfaq Word! I know you never can test a car in the Netherlands. I've got a classic Ionic electric 28 Kwh on your recommendation and I love it. Today at a sunny weather 18 °C my board computer says that my estimation = 249 km on a full charge. The consumption = 1 KW to 9 km average. So 9 x 27,5 = 247,5 km. How good is my ionic 2018 and 100.000 km? I always charge my car at home from March this year, other owners I don't know. And I drive proximity 800 km a week.

The trend isn't linear, so you'll get more accurate results the lower you go. I only have high confidence in readings from when the battery is less than 10%.

Could be good to know how many km your reference car have runned Björn so we can understand where the 58kWh comes from. Reason is that the batteries (modules) are marked 57kWh (clearly understated, but anyway...).

I charge daliy when I commute to work, charging with a slow charger 3,7kw up to around 70% and then when back home the car sits with around 50% to next trip to work. And when I'm free I don't drive the car so much and I let it stay with 50% SoC, DC charging mostly only from 5-10% up to 50%... The car has now traveled 50.000km and obd says 97% SoH... I wonder which way to obtain best SoH is... ?

@@bjornnyland My brother has the 28kwh model with 57000km, 100% gros charge are more than 31kwh so i don't think that net capacity is only 26kwh. It is not certain that the on-board consumption indicator is correct. Indeed, it is easier, as everyone does, than to make people believe that the car is very efficient, cheat a little on real consumption. For me real net capacity is 28kwh, gros charge is more than 31kwh and onboard trip is a little optimistic

If people treat the battery in their car like they would in their smartphone, it would last four or five times longer, stop charging it to 100%, max 80% or 90% during winter, preheat as much as possible even in summer temperatures below 20 degrees this can actually be beneficial, precooling is a feature in some cars as well. Stop hard accelerations, stop discharge to below 30%, do not charge the car constantly, keep using it until the battery drops to 60% and then charge to 80%, then repeat this, why? Because the battery is a liquid cell, it needs to be exercised if you will regularly to prevent degradation, this 20% use case has been found to be excellent for longevity, since all lithium batteries behave the same, with a solid state battery, this is not needed, almost all solid state batteries have far higher abuse rate, you can easily just discharge them to 0% and then quick charge to 100% as much as the cooling solution allows for anyway and then repeat the test again several thousand times, since solid state batteries are pretty much 10 years away, stick to a stricter battery use case, its not much of a hassle but rather change of habit, its kind of like how you need to idle diesel cars in the winter a bit before you start roaring away.

LG's "pouch" cells from back then - and used in some EVs like Kona, Bolt, etc - had a technical problem that caused battery fires. So that's why many of the EVs using them got major recalls. This was one of the affected models, so it's getting a new battery pack.
