I am the original owner of this 2017 Prius prime doing a long-term review. I maintain everything in this vehicle. I just recently had a huge repair bill for the touchscreen. It stopped working and cost nearly $3000.
Otherwise, so far the vehicle is running strong!

I have a 2017 Prius prime as well. Bought it brand new off the lot. I LOVE this car!! I just now have 20400 miles on it so still brand new and paid for! I do not think there is a more reliable and efficient car than this. Prius drivers buy these for 2 reasons reliability and fuel efficiency. My situation is a little different solo female so I take my car in to the dealer every 6 months like when new. The only 💰 have put into it is new tires 6 months ago. I do not know how to do car maintenance or repairs so I rely on the dealer. But ours is a great dealership this car is my 4th Prius I have bought from them. And so they treat me like royalty. As you can tell I love the Prius brand. In my area you can t even find a Prius they are that popular here. The lot is full of Range Rovers muscle cars and luxury cars traded in mostly on the sold out Prius’ new and used. If you can find a Prius prime in good condition grab it!!!

Are you in Canada??. Anyway I just picked up a 2017 from my brother, he bought something else, and its in decent shape with 75K km on it... corrosion is my question... ive noticed a bit of rust starting on the bottom of the driver and rear left door, where the seams meet... im planning to fix this , but did you ever get the car rust proofed or at least undercoated? thanks!

I am not from Canada, but I go there to visit every year! It’s a beautiful place there. I am up in Oregon and Washington. It doesn’t snow much here and I don’t think they use salt much where I am at. I have not had rust issues. But I would protect the underside if I lived in a snowy area and salt is used a lot. I do rinse the bottom of the vehicle more in winter if they salt to be safe.

I did the brakes on my 2005 Prius at 230K, but on my 2017 Prime they were shot at 100K. Not sure why, I think most of the difference was an hour or two of really hard driving on twisty mountain roads, at full throttle or on the brakes for about 10 or 15 minutes at a time. If so, it was still worth it. I chose cheap rotors from places with great eBay feedback, and good ceramic pads (higher end Raybestos on one axle, Bosch on the other) and brake hardware/lube from RockAuto. Working great so far. I opened the front windows, left the fob far away, and made sure not to open any of the doors until done. Safer to disconnect the 12V negative, but I was confident I wouldn't screw up and activate the brakes with a caliper removed. Rather than hang the caliper to keep from stretching or kinking a hose, I just sat it on an upside down kitty litter bucket in the wheel well next to the rotor. Much easier, much better. Don't forget to have one or two 8mm bolts on hand to pop the rotors off with, rather than hammering on them to little avail.
@DIYBIGMAN

Good info! Thanks for sharing. I may just reuse my rotors again. The vehicle drives fine breaking no shakes, but that will probably be a summertime project. I’ll have to take a look at them and see how thick they are. I’m sure I could easily get 200,000 miles on my original brakes. I’ll definitely keep your tips in mind!

Dealer saying u need a 12v is BECAUSE your computer wasn't reprogrammed. U have to enter, so pc doesnt say your DUE for a battery. Useless because u maintan it yourself. Yes, please keep us updated on repairs/brakes. Remember, keep your key fob away from your car and/or disconnect your 12v battery. I was WONDERING if u'd do another CVT change. I want to see what fluid looks like. I'm 71, dont agree with ALL u have done, I'm "old school," & OCD with mine, but enjoy how u maintain your Prime. U have been a big help/an inspiration to us viewers & owners of our Prii. 👍✊️🖖🇺🇸 PS. I'm from the northeast, SW PA. Already sub'd. Have you done your coolant? Dont remember any videos. I know how, just curious if u have. Will u do your brake fluid? I purchased a tester to give me a rough idea. I tested coolant with a multimeter. Some don't believe in it, but I'm open to new ways.

So the dealership had my vehicle for one week and they didn’t drive it and so the battery needed to get jumped. Because of that it threw a check engine light and they said I need a new battery for 400 bucks and I was like no, I just replaced it. The dealerships are always trying to come up with excuses to charge extra money. The batteries been fine ever cents, and I saw no check engine light. Maybe they were trying to milk me for some extra money in terms of the CVT oil yes I need to do that again soon. I’ll probably do that this summer Mechanically the cars pretty solid And I did a partial coolant change, not too long ago probably close to 150,000 miles. It was fairly easy to do. I’m not gonna wait that long to do it again.

@@DIYBIGMAN I usually drive with Display OFF. To turn AC on while screen is off....Turn Front Defroster ON then Off. AC will go to Auto. Can use Physical Up/Down AC Buttons on Left Side of Display for Cooler\Warmer. But to turn AC Off, do need to Turn Display On and use Display Touch Control AC Off. Love my 2021 Prius Prime...Display not so much.

Agreed… I had a 2006 Prius (Gen 2) with the digital buttons (but also physical buttons on steering wheel), then I had a 2014 Plug in (Gen 3) also with physical buttons, and I had intended to get a Prime after that, but for various reasons it never happened, and I finally upgraded to the the new 23 Prime (in yellow! 😎🇨🇦) and it has been fantastic. The physical buttons are nice, for muscle memory purposes… digital buttons are difficult to use by “touch”, not to mention not at the mercy of an expensive screen. 😉

I'm happy with my decision to get the bottom trim level on my 17 Prime, to have the smaller screen, more buttons/knobs, and a better arrangement of vents. The only thing I really wanted from the top trim level was the heated steering wheel. Somehow I've survived without it.

How is the battery range and did you have to replace the charger. Do you use and charge daily?
@DIYBIGMAN

The original charger is still working and my battery range is still reasonable close to 24 miles in the summertime probably about 20 in the winter time for electric range I have gone through two other 240 V EV chargers. the original charger just charges slowly at the standard house outlet so that’s probably why it last longer as well

2017 through 2022 are all the same. It's an eCVT, nothing like a normal CVT. Just fixed planetary gearing like in a differential. No slipping, no bands, no clutches, no hydraulics, no changing of gears. I'll be doing my first WS change on my 2017 within the next week. When I did one about 8 years ago on a 2005 Prius at 160K, the original fluid didn't look terrible, but it wasn't clean either. The change did improve the mpg by maybe 2 or 3 percent, which surprised me.
