Kip Amore , clearly you don’t have FCA’s best combo of the features you highlighted in your vehicles, the grand Cherokee 2014 wk2. The transmission of my nearly 5 yr of ownership has seen in upwards of double digit recalls, the transmission (ZF 8 speed in the 3.6 pentastar) still clunks around in 1st to 3rd gears, the HVAC randomly blowing hot air when the air con is on (just because it can) spare part acquisition is ridiculous, and the reputation for customer disservice that FCA is renowned for has devalued my car horrendously, even though she’s only done 30000 km barely in that time. I have driven 200+km range in small Hyundai i20 and Mazda 2 because I feel they have less tendency to strand me in the middle of no where as opposed to this vehicle.

reyshiify You have a 5 year old car with only 18,600 miles? Are you driving it all off-road or something? Are your trans recalls all related to the rotary shifter that killed that actor kid? I would agree that FCA dealer experience is awful. But the parts side is actually pretty good. I can’t argue about depreciation, although Jeeps are the exception, are they not?

Not quite. As I understand it, the Benz ML was based on the Durango/Grand Cherokee. This is what I'm bitching about; commenters are always saying the Charger/300/Challenger are just a 20 year old E-class. Not true anymore! The first ones had some E class parts, but those are long gone. It's been what...12 years since Benz's attempt to bankrupt Chrysler failed.

The current generation Durango/Grand Cherokee started 2011 and it is based on (related to) Mercedes Benz M-Class, not ML and not the other way around. The original 5-speed transmission was made by Mercedes (W5A580).

I have a Ram 3500 so I didn't need the towing package. I got it because it comes with a full sized spare tire. So, that also means the brake controller is not a deal breaker for me. That said, I can see why you'd wait. As for reliability, 17k miles in and nothing but oil changes so far. I have the mentality that every car will eventually have an issue here and there. Unless it's ALL THE TIME, I'm not too worried since that's what lemon laws are for.

N Pooch from what I can tell, trans, engine are solid. There were several issues with the 8.4 inch Nav screen. But all were fixed in updates. Let’s see if Alex the master Guru responds .

bt4b4 hncles transmission failed at 10k had to get full replacement. Under warranty but it’s a joke.

3 years with 0 issues and I adore it and my children adore it more than me but I hate the rotary shifter and it’s a very long car but it’s narrow in the same time.

Here's a quick one. I hit 1 year ownership next week. 17k miles in and have zero complaints. It has not had a single issue. It's strong, looks good, good space inside for road trips, USBs in the 2nd and 3rd row for the kids, MPGs are 17-18 on the HWY (eastbound in Kansas you could probably do 22 or more) and 15 in the city (10-12 if you keep your foot into it).

EL OEL: That’s bull crap. I have a 2016 Durango R/T that will complete 3 years in Aug’19. Only issue had was one of turn indicator lights failing which got fixed at dealer for less than $20. The car has been rock solid, no rattles or lose parts whatsoever. I have driven so many cars during my business trips - no one comes close the fun that Durango R/T delivers.

ACC works well. I just don't get a chance to use it much. Lane departure takes some getting used to. When the lines of the road open up such as turn lanes left and right, you can feel the steering wheel tug a bit. Nothing too drastic though. Auto wipers are great although sometimes not sensitive enough. The auto highbeams are ok. I sometimes feel they don't turn off when they should. Sometimes, a car can be a mile ahead but it doesn't always sense it. I know that can be an issue for me if the tables are turned so I monitor that. It's very easy to just click them off when you want.

When you purchase a new SRT, you get a track day at Bob Bondurant Race Driving School in Phoenix. When I did mine in June, I spoke with the mechanics down there (the ones that don't normally mingle with the "customers"). They have 40+ Hellcat Challengers and Chargers that they allow novice drivers to race around a track all day, in the heat, about 260 days out of the year. They very rarely experience any "failures". 99% of the work done to these cars are oil changes, brake work, and tire changes. I think that fact should be more advertised by Mopar than it is because that amazes me. These products are strong and if you take care of it, you won't have any issues with them.

This Durango srt just came out on 2018 . But this a total new Durango .

Honestly, Durango’s can be driven until they have 200,000 miles on it & still run good, bought my 2015 dodge citadel with 87,000 miles on it, only had 2 problems with it since my 2 in a half years owning it & now has 116,000 miles on it & it still runs & sounds good, as long as you do the maintenance like you suppose to, they run forever.

That's what I've gotten in the past 2 weeks of ownership.

I personally love it, it's almost too much performance, I would have been happy with the Durango R/T. I mean all that power will get me in trouble with the cops because it's so easy to go fast, especially on the highway.

He's doing a review which no doubt has some full throttle moments. I am currently sitting at 16.2 mpg in mixed driving with the occasional full throttle.

At this point, I'd be happy with 16 MPG.

I test drove an R/T before it was announced they would make the SRT version. I came away from that test drive thinking it was a great vehicle but I wanted more performance. The 360 hp Hemi in the R/T just wasn't going to cut it. I even told the salesman "if they could just make a higher hp version, I'd buy it". Low and behold, they did, and I got it. Zero regrets. If class leading power/performance isn't a necessity for you, the R/T is still a great vehicle especially at the year end price deals you can find.

Dungeon Master EPA is fairly accurate and I can find it myself, but that info would be useful in a video review. You’ll note with this SRT Durango review, we hear about cylinder deactivation, we hear about the 8 speed, but the info I want is “what does it get on the highway?”. That info is absent.

Welp, the EPA gives you a fairly realistic highway estimate. As to why it's not mentioned in the review? Probably the same reason crash safety isn't mentioned? It's easily checked on the IIHS website and including it into the video would be excessive? Perhaps Alex didn't have the time to do such tests? And if he did, there'd likely still be someone mad about the methodology?

Dungeon Master point taken. But I went ahead and looked it up. Epa is 19 on premium. Fine, though I can almost guarantee you’d get more than that. Why? Because the challenger with the same drivetrain gets 25 EPA. If I recall, Alex in his own video on the challenger srt claimed 29 or 30. And that car didnt have cylinder decativation, I think. You’d be inclined to say “yeah well, the durango is heavier than the challenger”. Yeah, but that doesnt matter much on level ground. Aero doesnt account for 6mpg. I’m guessing, but I’d bet one of my nuts that if you set the cruise at 65 and drove around kansas, that thing would get mid 20s. But I don’t KNOW that, because none of the online reviewers can be bothered to do anything but parrot what’s on the window sticker.

I get 16 in mixed driving and have seen over 20 on highway cruising at 80 mph. I've also seen 10 when I can't keep my foot out of it.

I use everything in my 2015 genesis sedan. This has less tech than that and I would use it all too. The auto wipers and high beams are awesome. Just wish this had the hud like my genesis.

I will attempt to answer your questions. I use the "tech" every day. I use the Apple Carplay, the SRT driving modes, the auto wipers, the lane departure, the xm traffic, nav system, etc. For example, I used the nav system to find a restaurant the other day. I simply said "find nearest _____". It found it in about 3 secs and provided me all the information you could ever want to include the phone number. I then called that number and made a reservation. All of this was hands free and accomplished in less than a minute (including the phone call). As for the SRT driving modes, they are very distinct modes from each other. If you put the vehicle into "track mode", the steering is EXTREMELY tight. The suspension is kidney rupturing. It is not a soft riding machine anymore. You will feel every pebble. It also speeds up the shifting. So I use it a few times a week when I decide to get a little spirited in my driving. The Hemi "brapppp" is much more noticeable in track mode too.I have 17k miles on mine and have used "launch mode" three times. It's nearly as fast without it. The AWD launch is amazing with or without it. I average 16 mpg in mixed driving with the occasional full throttle fun. You can get the SRT front end on the 2018s as well. Kind of made me mad they allowed that.If you bought the 5.7 with an SRT nose, a tune, pulleys and a cam, you will definitely pocket about $12k ($52k compared to $64k). But you're not going to be anywhere close to the same performance of the SRT to include the suspension. And, you'll miss out on many other nice attributes like the stitched leather dash, suede headliner, laguna leather seats and all the driving modes.Hope this helps.

I've owned a LOT of cars over the course of 40 years. Can't say one brand was any worse than another. I've had a Honda which blew a head gasket, and I had a Toyota truck that gave me no end of engine trouble. I currently own two Dodges, and the two issues have been electrical (PCM covered under warranty, and wheel speed sensors which got immersed).

I certainly wouldn't call it a full size (although it beats many of the full sized competitors in many categories). I also wouldn't call it a mid size. It's somewhere in between. If you compare it to the true full sized options, it's the smallest. Compare it to the mid sized ones and it's the biggest. It's truly unique and sits right in the middle. I presume that's the reason FCA hasn't been in the full size class for awhile.

Your 2001 was body on frame construction. That in and of itself doesn't mean it is or isn't full size. But it did ride more like a truck as it was on the Dakota chassis. The newer Durangos are on a Mercedes Benz chassis. These are crossovers by definition (unibody). There are no unibody full sized SUVs out there. Again, it's in between sizes. If you're going strictly by length, the 4runner is 190ish inches. The explorer is 198 inches. The Armada is 208 inches. The Tahoe is 204 inches. The Expedition is 210 inches. Where's the Durango? 201 inches. It bridges the gap. If you want to draw the line at 200 inches and call it a full sized, go for it. But then the unibody aspect makes it unique in the full size market. Semantics. Call it what you like.

Drive one before you say this. When I bought mine, it comes with a driving day at Bob Bondurant Race Driving School. I drove someone else's SRT Durango down there on a road course and I can attest, it's no station wagon and far from boring. It's no road course drivers car, but the first time you take it into a 270 degree increasing radius turn at 90 mph and it grips and then you feel the power pull you out, you'll realize this is no ordinary SUV.

I won't argue your comments about the displacement being out of your thought process in this time and age. To each, their own. But this vehicle does not, in any way, shape or form, drive like a truck. I've driven it around a road course before (in triple digit speeds) and while it's no track star, it can hold it's own. Watch some videos or racers test driving it around Indy last year and making comments about it if you want to know how capable it is as a performance vehicle. But my biggest argument against your comments are in regards to "lack of luxuries". Find me another vehicle that has stitched leather dash, full laguna leather interior, the best infotainment center in the industry, and a suede headliner for under $70k. Then add the performance capabilities and the functionality of towing more than most full sized SUVs AND a third row. I've done the research. There isn't one. The closest you'll get is a $130k Benz.
