With the America's addiction to crossovers at a fever pitch, many shoppers seem to have forgotten that traditional body-on-frame SUVs still exist. Toyota's entry is their Tundra-based Sequoia 8-seat behemoth that offers nearly 10 inches more total legroom than a Chevy Tahoe or GMC Yukon. On the down side it's been quite some time since Toyota made any substantive changes to their large people mover and as a result it's feeling a little behind the times. As 2018 draws to a close we don't see any major changes on the horizon for the 2019 Sequoia.

If you don't have a big family, nor you need to tow, there is no justification to buy an inefficient vehicle like this, it might be reliable, but the money wasted in fuel is a lot, and the transmission is going to give issues in the long run with such complexity, and will be quite expensive to replace.

Also I have 2 luxury cars using premium and I have been used to the gas prices. I rather pay more on gas than break down in the mountains or long trips. Not to mention paying a shop to fix broken electrical and mechanical issues. With Toyota I am fine with their factory warranty. With the big 3 I would have to buy the extended warranty lol.

I just bought a 2018 Toyota Sequoia Platinum for $56300 before tax and tags and fees. Sticker was just shy of $69k. Toyota was offering $3,500 cash back on 2018 models. The 2018 and 2019 Sequoia are exactly the same in every way for every trim model. Gas tank is 26.5 gallons and I average 13.1 mpg in mixed use (mostly city). This is the second Sequoia I have owned (last one was a 2011 Limited Version) and I love them. I have a family of 5 and a dog so the interior room can't be beat. Highly recommended if you can get a deal.

A Sequoia is truly a 3/4 ton SUV that will run 400,000 miles with proper maintenance. Alex failed to mention that the underlying frame, 5.7 liter engine and transmission were originally rated to tow 10,000 pounds which is 3/4 ton truck territory. Our 2014 Sequoia towed a 7500 pound trailer 3500 miles through most of the East Coast last summer and barely broke a sweat. Our previous Suburban 2500 with the 6.2 liter engine was about equal in towing a similar trailer. It was rated at 9400 pounds towing capacity. Toyota changed its method of towing calculation around 2011, but the vehicle did not change.

I have a 2010 Platinum and I love it. Other than fuel economy it does everything well. Has 120k miles but drives like new and everything works perfectly. Depreciation is the highest cost of ownership and Sequoia has a great resale value so when you look 5 yrs into the future you will find that a Sequoia doesn't cost as much to own as it's competition. Jay Mac - Our 2014 Sequoia is set up much like a van or the Nissan NV 3500 with a relatively short hood and large body in the same overall length as something more like a Ford Expedition. The second and third rows have enormous leg room. When my Sequoia needs engine work near the firewall, I'm planning to take it to a shop as it is too cramped for me. Not happy with lack of a transmission dipstick, but that's common on modern vehicles. Don't buy a Sequoia as just a kid hauler - there's plenty of solid choices that don't have the strength or towing capability of these body-on-frame "dinosaurs."

Except for the wildly increased fuel consumption. Per year we are talking about 500 more a year over a tahoe and 700 a year over an expedition (using a 2.64 usd per gallon price). Over 8 years, that's 4000 dollars saved with a tahoe and 5600 dollars with an expedition. I would honestly rather put that money into repairs and have a more updated vehicle than in fuel savings. Also I am pretty sure it has the shortest range in class.

I'm the third owner of an '02 Sequoia Limited 4x4 and I've had it for a little over a year. I bought it for $3,500 and it's approaching 300k miles. Yes, the mileage sucks and it's not a cone carver, but that's not what you buy these kinds of trucks for. It's taken me everywhere I want to go, carried everything I throw into it, and towed trailers several times all without any fuss. Build quality is amazing with barely a squeak, no tears in the leather, and no missing or broken trim pieces. After I installed a back-up camera/NAV/Bluetooth radio, I don't feel as if I'm missing much from a newer rig. The only thing I can think of that's truly bad about it is that the third row is a pain to remove.

The turning radius is great for making U-turns and the nice large mirrors fold in by pushing a button so they don't stick out when you park. I can see behind while pulling my 8' wide RV without using clamp on mirrors. It gets much better mileage on the interstate, which it is primarily designed for. I bought my 2018 Platinum Sequoia used one year. It's the same as if I bought it new. I had to replace the battery because it won't start if the voltage drops, so I carry one of those lithium jump start batteries in case it happens again. I'm well pleased with it and love taking it on long trips.

I wanted a full size to pull our small trailer and be comfortable for all our kids. Plus I wanted a Toyota. Definitely agree with most of the negatives except handling. The platinum does have a ride control switch for sway. Also, that dash with the gauges is redesigned from the 2017 and much better than the 2017 dash.

I love the "old" of this rig, we just bought one because everything is tried and true (no surprises). I've had larger rigs with 8+ speed auto transmissions and I absolutely hate how all of them "hunt" for a gear on road trips, especially using cruise control. I also like going a bit backwards on the Tech stack. Less to go wrong, all the manufacturers are pushing the limit on technology and I'm tired of being a beta tester for them. One reason I've swarn off the big three as well. I like the feel of the TRD Sport, the handling is surprisingly tight and flat for something this big, it almost reminds me of a VW Touareg with sport suspension. Long story short, the TRD Sport may not be the status symbol everyone is going for and won't admit to, but it gets the job done, dependably and will do everything I need it to, and then some. Oh, and the price, compared to the GM and Ford offerings make me feel like i'm not being bent over a barrel. Want more power, get a magnuson supercharger and bolt it right on.

Unlike most auto consumers, I am ALL about engine and transmission durability, reliability, and ride comfort. I do NOT care about cup holders, heated steering wheels, power tailgates, infotainment systems, and other gizmos and doo dads. Truck starts up every morning for years and years and years? Handles snow and mud effortlessly? Air conditioner blows ice cold? I'm good to go! I found nothing to complain about. Ford and GM have figured out that the people who still buy these dinos are people for whom towing is important. And because of that they are including an option for a built-in towing brake controller. This is important because these built-in brake controllers work in conjunction with stability control. I consider this an important safety feature and this why I'm not looking at a Sequoia or Armada.

There is on aspect here that it is not being discussed though: The sale price that you see on the web page compared to the real sale price. If you check the offer at autotrader, you can find brand new Tahoes, Armadas or Expeditions for about 40k to 42k, while the Sequoias start at almost 50k, all of them entry-level (lower end of the range). Why would you then pay an outdated product almost 8 k more than a newer one ?

I have a 2008 Sequoia Limited with 170K miles and zero mechanical issues. A worry free 10 year ownership experience towing 6,000 Ib. trailers up and down Colorado mountain passes. It has been a comfortable, reliable and capable 4X4 suv but the relatively small fuel tank compounds the poor fuel economy/range issue - A total pain when towing and having to fuel up every 200 miles. I would love to buy another refreshed Sequoia but I just cant see paying $60K to drive the exact same suv for another 10 years. If no redesign, I am jumping ship next year....maybe the new Expedition!

Good review Alex , the one thing you did not mention was the off road capability? The other thing I find interesting is when it came to reliability you only showed the Ford Expedition . In my looking at all of these vehicles in thoughts of purchasing any time I see someone with one of these models I stop and talk to them . It seams that the people who own the Sequoia complain about fuel mileage ( as you mentioned) but after that they rave about it’s reliability ( spoke with people with over 300K ) and off road capabilities seam to be endless . People I talk to with the Fords don’t seam to go off road much and also complain about fuel mileage not being what is advertised. Chevy people same when it come to off road less complaints about fuel economy . Looking at the price of all comparably equipped the Sequoia looks to be about $10K to 15K less , does that sound right ? In any case good to see the comparison between the vehicles gives a good idea of what you can get in this segment with the associated costs and features. Thanks

It is inaccurate to say that this 5.7L V8 is “not as modern” this engine is 32V, Dual Overhead Cam, Variable Valve Timing, Direct Injected and the power & torque ratings are great. Not having an 8-spd. Auto Transmission does mean a mile or two per gallon loss in economy... but the engine is still very modern regardless of that transmission factor. A side note to the 6spd. Tranny in the Sequoia is that it is highly intuitive and silky smooth in operation.

Havn't mention the sequoia is the only SUV offers switchable full time 4wd drive and 2wd system. it helps a lot In winter slushy condition, since the truck can be in 40/60 4wd all the time. And I found when alex doing the test, the truck was on 4hi, that may explain a little bit why the gas mileage is to high. in average, it will be about 1-2 mpg difference 2wd vs 4wd.
@Jeep2Honda
@Jeep2Honda 5 жыл бұрын
GM twins offer a transfer case with the choice of 2hi, 4hi, 4lo and Auto 4WD. The Ford Expedition FX4 Transfer case offers Auto 4WD, 4lo, and 2hi modes.
@WangYcca
@WangYcca 5 жыл бұрын
those auto 4wd systems are not full time 4wd, they are intelligent 4wd, basically they are part time 4wd + clutch packs. the truck will run at 2wd, and will only engage 4wd when the trucks sense slips. it is the same as you manually switch between 2wd and 4wd, just a little faster. Doesn't matter how fast the switching is, when the trucks sense slips some time it is late already when you drive fast at icy roads. Since those system are basically part time 4wd, it cannot in 4hi at high speed, and make turns, so that when you drive at high speed with angled steering, the 4hi even cannot engage. Ford auto 4hi, front wheels are engaged all the time with 1-2% power send to the front. That explains why the auto 4hi gas mileage is lower than 2wd. However, what bothers me is that at auto 4hi the clutch packs is wearing all the time, although they are quite heavy duty. it is like you are driving a manual stick car with half clutch pressed all the time. For some other brands, like infiniti QX80 armada, they seem like they are not even have clutch packs, when they are engaging 4hi, it will take even longer time. Full time(permanent) 4WD systems (such as lc, lx, Sequoia, 4runner limited, q7, GLE, GLS ) won't help more than part time or intelligent systems when they are offroading, but they do increase the highway stability better than others.
@Jeep2Honda
@Jeep2Honda 5 жыл бұрын
I agree with you. I see what you are saying now. I think it is funny that Ford's FX4 "off-Road" package, while having a low range, does not actively lock into 4-wheel drive hi-range. Like you said above, GM's Auto 4wd mode engages the front only when rear slippage is detected. While their system does actively lock 4-wheel drive when in 4hi or 4lo, it does lack the option to have an open transfer case in 4WD like Jeep's original Selec-Trac, or the Sequoia. I suppose the manufacturers compromised capability and safety for MPG with the "Auto" systems. My old XJ with the Selec-Trac in Full-Time 4WD was very stable and safe in rain and slushy snow.

I can honestly understand why people like the Sequoia. It's a reasonably decent truck-based SUV - but what it does need is a massive interior refresh. It needs better materials quality to compete with the segment, and it needs better infotainment for the exact same reason. Toyota is moving forward quickly with their other vehicles, and I honestly do hope that the rumored all-new Tundra within the next few years fixes a lot of the issues the Tundra and Sequoia both have. For now, taking the dash and door design straight from the current Tundra would be a massive upgrade by itself for the Sequoia.

1. Still look better than many modern American SUVS inside and out. When Toyota made this one back in 2008, they were ahead by at least 10 years of everyone else. That's why they can chill now. 2. As far as MPG goes. Fords and GMs numbers are deceiving. Look on fuelly.com. While sequoias MPG on paper match what people actually report, GM and Ford SUVs drivers report averages even below city MPG. 3. I have owned 2004 Sequoia and 2012 Sequoia Platinum. Purchased 2018 Expidition last year. Will be selling it this year and jump back on Sequoia. New Expedition is junk car all around. You feel it inside and outside. Everything is made cheap and without much thought process. Sequoia is much much better in driving and maintaining, and resale values. 4. The tailgate is powered on platinum and limited. Plus you have to insert key to close the tailgate window for safety. You can open it with remote though. 5. Buy sequoia. Best SUV on the market

The fords and sadly chevy ( from 2008 to 2019) {Fords have always been the worst to feed and clothe after 5 years!! } ... are just not made to same quality as Toyota. I have owned them all. considering TCO, total cost of owner ship... Toyota Sequoia is really hard to beat.
