Can't wait for more updates on 2018 Tiguan or any other VW Tiguan...You need to tell your mom or dad that a video you made 5 years ago actually makes sense today. Tell them a random guy, Paul Jones, bought that car in 2024, and called you a visionary, since mainstream could not deliver like you did, five years ago. I watched this in 24 minutes or 6 times, taking notes, I don't have the right tools now, but I know exactly what to expect for this upcoming oil change in 29 days, and I already have the right questions to ask them, from your video. Hats-Off!

It’s so much easier than I thought. The dealership and other automotive shops charge so much to change the oil. They say it’s bc it’s foreign, I don’t see what the big deal is to charge $169 to change the oil. I know the oil cost more & you have the filter, it just seems like they take advantage

You will find people arguing online for ages about whether or not to fill the oil filter housing/oil filter. In my opinion, if it's easy to fill the housing or spin on filter I would do it. There are plenty of cars where this isn't possible, but I've never had an issue either way.

What type of engine oil temperatures are you seeing in 70F+ weather when cruising on the interstate at 75mph? I feel like the 0W20 weight oil isn’t thick and durable enough for these engines. Why did VW change oil specs, for other than mpg related things? I, and I’m sure you do too, care more about longevity and reliability than a small increase in mpg, 1-2mpg if even that.
@InTheGarageDIY3 жыл бұрын
I typically see 205F-214F. I've been tempted to run 0w30 or 5w30 just to see what it does to MPG. The car now has heavy all terrain tires so I'm losing MPG anyway lol.

Hi great video, i have a question so you have to replace the oil pen plug every oil change??
@InTheGarageDIY2 жыл бұрын
Eh. Some people say yes, some say no. It is plastic, so it could get brittle over time if you re-use it multiple times. I would replace it since it's only a couple dollars.

Have you ever used the oils extractors and not drained the oil from the drain plug at the bottom of the pan?
@InTheGarageDIY4 жыл бұрын
I personally haven't. I know two people that had pieces of the hose break off inside the oil pan while trying to extract. I also know a lot of people that do it without issue. It's much easier and less messy for sure. It always leaves a little oil behind of that is something that would bother you.

Thanks good video, quite a bit of oil in these engines at 6 litres! Who has a 32 mm socket in their home garage? Did you purchase that specially? The drain plug and sump pan being plastic is a surprise, how tight is the drain plug meant to be?
@InTheGarageDIY Жыл бұрын
I did buy the socket specifically for this. They are easy to find online, I got mine from ESCTuning. I think a 1 1/4" socket will also work. The drain plug just turns like 3/4 of a turn and locks in place. It just has a rubber o-ring to make the seal.

Should I be able to get everything you used from a local auto store? Or did some things have to be ordered online?
@InTheGarageDIY Жыл бұрын
All the tools most likely. The oil filter housing might be tricky. It's a 32.5mm, but a 1 1/4" socket should work too. The drain plug might also be a little hard to find and so is the oil. If your car is still under warranty I would suggest using the VW/Audi spec oil 0w20 (508/509). If you aren't under warranty or don't care about it I would use a good quality synthetic from your local auto parts store from Mobil 1. Same viscosity, 0w20. I ordered all my parts from ECSTuning.

Thanks for the great video! Do you know if it's ok to use 5W40 oil? I went to Costco and they said the only oil they could use was 5W40. When they lifted my car, they saw this oil drain plug which they had never seen one like this before and they didn't want to do it because they didn't want to break anything. I showed them the video (that you use only a flat hand screwdriver) but then you use a new oil drain plug which they don't have. Do you know if it is mandatory to change it? Also where do you buy it? Thanks for your help! Lol
@InTheGarageDIY5 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I would not use 5w40. The only places I have found that have the proper VW 508/509 oil is either at the dealer or online. I bought my stuff from ECStuning. You don't "have" to replace the drain plug, it's just recommended.
@kojot09764 жыл бұрын
In the Garage DIY I’m just gonna throw my two cents here. 5W-40 is viable option and even suggested by VW if 0W-20 is either unavailable to you or you live in warm/hot climate. Castrol Edge Professional would be a top choice if 5W-40 is to be used. VW Technical Bulletin 2012855

@sandyshoremann75244 жыл бұрын
All you have to know is: VW 508.00 / 509.00. Castrol , Motul, Fuchs and Liqui Moly have this spec available. Watch out - some VW/Audi dealers may try to use up their bulk 5W40 VW spec 502. Unless you see the oil going in from a bottle - I wouldn't place much trust in some dealers. They can even fudge the Repair Order line item. -Sandy

Since when did VW use 0W/20? Are sure that you did put the correct oil in? Normally VW designs their engines to use 5W/30...
@InTheGarageDIY5 жыл бұрын
Pretty recently. They recommend it for the Gen 3 "Buddack" cycle TSI or EA888B engine. Probably for better fuel economy, but the oil fill cap is labeled 0W20. I plan on starting oil analysis once the engine is more broken in with 25-30k miles on it. We'll see if any notable trends emerge.
@InTheGarageDIY5 жыл бұрын
Also, for warranty purposes. The new 508.00/509.00 spec oil has a green dye in it so dealers can distinguish it in case of a warranty claim.
@danielfl.93475 жыл бұрын
In the Garage DIY Thanks for the answer. I did not know they went down in viscosity that much. Perhaps they don't expect this engine to be pushed hard? Well, it's good to follow the recommended oil by the manufacturer. So you did the right thing even tough I would be scared to pour such a thin oil in a VW.
@InTheGarageDIY5 жыл бұрын
@@danielfl.9347 Yeah. There is a lot of debate on the forums about which oil to use. Like is the EA888b really much different than the regular EA888? Idk. I'll just wait and see what the oil analysis looks like...if wear numbers are higher than normal I'll think about switching.
